- The QUEEN OF SIDNEY and the SAN MATEO are two historic ferries that now rest as abandoned wrecks in Mission, Canada, each with a rich and storied past.
QUEEN OF SIDNEY
The QUEEN OF SIDNEY, now known as BAD ADVENTURE, was a notable ferry in the British Columbia Ferries fleet. Launched in 1960, the QUEEN OF SIDNEY was the first ferry in the BC Ferries fleet, marking the beginning of a new era in transportation for the region. For decades, she transported passengers and vehicles across the waters, becoming a familiar and reliable sight.
In 2002, after over 40 years of service, the QUEEN OF SIDNEY was retired. She was sold and repurposed several times, eventually being renamed BAD ADVENTURE. Despite her name change, she couldn't escape her fate and was abandoned in the waters near Mission, British Columbia. Today, she lies in disrepair, a shadow of her former glory, serving as a poignant reminder of the past.
SAN MATEO
The SAN MATEO has a similarly intriguing history. Built in 1922, the SAN MATEO was originally part of the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet in Washington State. She was a steam-powered ferry, representing the cutting-edge marine technology of her time. For many years, the SAN MATEO served as a critical transportation link across Puget Sound, providing reliable service for both passengers and vehicles.
With advancements in ferry technology and the construction of new vessels, the SAN MATEO eventually became obsolete. She was retired from active service and, like the QUEEN OF SIDNEY, was left to deteriorate. The SAN MATEO was eventually towed to Mission, where she now lies abandoned alongside the QUEEN OF SIDNEY, both vessels sharing a similar fate.
Current State (July 2024)
Today, the QUEEN OF SIDNEY and the SAN MATEO are in a state of decay. They rest in the waters near Mission, British Columbia, forgotten relics of a bygone era. These once-majestic ferries, which served thousands of passengers and vehicles, now serve as haunting reminders of the past, their hulks slowly succumbing to the elements.
Important note for times and figures
I use the Central European form (in this case the form used in Germany) for all information, as this is a German production and the English-language texts are merely a service for my non-German-speaking visitors. This means that 6:00 pm is used in Canada and is 18:00 in my video. In English, the usual 17.70 m is 17,70 m here.

Thanks for sharing Carsten! Strange that they are allowed to have them resting as abandoned wrecks instead of scraping them. Greetings and have a nice day! // Bertil.
Hello Bertil,
Thank you very much. The authorities have probably been trying for years, but it doesn't work because of the ownership situation (as far as I know - maybe our Canadian viewers already know more? - Leave your comment)
Have a nice day!
I always find it really fascinating to see abandoned ships or shipwrecks, just something about how they’re preserved amazes me. Another great video as always 👍
Thank you very much!
there is nothing preserved about the former Qn of Sydney, it is a derelict vessel whose owner has let fall into this state.
The Province of BC and the Federal Governement has paid millions to keep this vessel from floating away and causing even more harm to the environment in the Fraser River
Thanks for your comment & update.
Where is this vessel located?? Please advise 🙏
