Inside One Of The MOST EXPENSIVE Cruise Ships In The World

  • It takes a staff of 2,400 people working day and night to keep Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas sailing. From tiny cruise-ship kitchens, chefs whip up 30,000 meals a day. All waste onboard is dealt with in secret, crew-only areas of the ship. And the engine room and captain’s bridge work together to power and move the floating city. We go below deck on one of the world’s largest cruise ships.

    I'm a cruiser and have taken many. I just recently done Encore ( Norwegien) . i went solo. My first solo, i just wanted to try it out. I loved the solo cabin. The ship had over 4'000 people, way more than i was use to. It was not enjoyable. They nickeled and dimed you for everything. The morning of the last day was a pain and took forever, so many people waiting to get off the ship, not good. My best cruise experinces would have to be Princess from out of San Francisco. Smaller ships and less people to me are by far much enjoyable. You pay all that money why not enjoy : less people, chaos, quality of food, able to move around, can go freestyle wben it comes to dinning, can go to any show and it's enough sitting for everyone, you are not nickle and dimed. This ship is just toooooooooooooo much. I love people and getting to know the crew, that means alot to me. I'm 65 and i love being at sea and dressing up ( Captain's night). God bless you all.

      I did Haromny out of Miami, first cruise, 6000 people, 2500 crew, most of the time I kept asking where is everybody? The only time we saw a crowd was when we were going into the shows, even then it took only minutes to get in and get a seat. Still amazes me to this day how so few people we saw. Boarding and disembarkation was literally walk on and off, very little queuing. Being a lover of the sea and ships, the one thing i was dissappointed with was it looked more like a block of flats than a ship, so you never really got the feeling of being on board a ship.

    I've been on Symphony of the Seas as well as the new Wonder of The Seas, Oasis of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas. The Oasis class ships are just amazing. I have never felt overwhelmed except during high-lunch times if going to buffets. I don't use the pools, instead I just spend my time relaxing by drinking, walking, seeing shows and taking my time. There are plenty of areas to find solace, the ships are so huge you don't realize there are thousands (except during launch/end day). I enjoy city life, so these ships bring that level of familiarity on my trips. Don't get me wrong, you wont get the same level of personal service as you do on a smaller ship or a luxury cruise, but if you want to experience what it might be like going on a intergalactic cruise of the future, these ships are it!

It was only workers and kitchens, engine rooms, launbdries, etc! I saw nothingt that a passenger on a cruise on this ship would actually enjoy. They mentioned the gym but failed to show any shot of it. Same for ports--we saw a dock, but never why we'd love to visit that town, city, or country. Like they were trying to attract buyers or workers, not passengers. WEIRD.

      We never saw a single shot of where passengers will spend their 3 to 5 days or whatever. This could have been a skanky old hotel in Vegas because passengers never see laundries, water distilleries, engines... Where were the reasons we'd want to be there?

    • @cyberherbalist
      @cyberherbalist Před 5 měsíci +3

      Having not crewed on one of these ships I can't comment with experience, but there are compensations to all this. Some passenger-facing crew receive "tips." These include servers/waitstaff in the dining rooms (not the cafeterias though), and the stewards who see to maintaining passenger cabins. All of the crew receive food and accommodation as part of their compensation -- in other words, they eat and sleep for free, unlike the passengers. Most of the crew are from countries where people are not paid as well as people in Western countries. Yes, they have to work hard and don't get much experience of the places they sail to, but consider other occupations where this is also the case. Most of the crew on US Navy aircraft carriers, for instance, almost never go out on deck, and live in similar, perhaps even less comfortable conditions. And unlike the Navy, cruise workers do have limited recreation facilities for their own use, out of sight of the passengers.
      I've cruised several times, and in conversations with many cruise workers I found that most of them had been working on these ships for years -- if they were mistreated or too poorly paid, they obviously wouldn't continue to do this work. They are not slaves.

      It looked like a scifi movie of a crowded dystopian human processing factory. Nothing enjoyable, just engines, washing dishes and sheets, and the computers they use to operate the ship. That's nice, esp for technically minded folks, but the US offers no "5th-grade physics classes! 12th grade for kids who complete 3+ years of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus (simultaneously w/physics) and biology, chemistry. My engineer ex would like this but even he would love to see the plates of food passengers would be served more than workers removing lobster shells. Was this doc made for executives at the cruise line to learn their side of the cruising experience? Ice skating instead of swimming pools was a bizarre touch--perhaps what Russians might do on a cruise, but def not where others would spend their time at sea! They go on cruises ton escape snow and ice. Swimming pools, sunbathing, eating, maybe a scuba diving adventure, perhaps dinner, drinks and dancing in the evening, and a stroll around the decks in the moonlight? Things they can't do back in Minnesota or Wisconsin in February...

    If you watch various cruise review channels, the main problem with huge ships like this (whether or not you like the idea of being in a floating hotel/mall/amusement park with thousands of other people) is that you have to reserve ahead for meals and shows or get on line and wait, or risk missing out. And embarking/disembarking is also slow because of all the people. That does not sound relaxing or fun.

      Exactly! It's a mid-range hotel wrapped around a shopping mall with an amusement park on the roof... and several thousand people trying to squeeze into ten hot tubs. And then you disembark with 15K other tourists and try to squeeze into souvenir shop and grab a fast food meal of "authentic" local cuisine before you have to get back onboard. But I suppose if that's one's thing, go for it. I do wonder what the food is like but with that many people to feed, I doubt they do much better than Applebee's or TGIFridays.

I m from 🇫🇮, and was still amazed the level of engineering ot takes to manufactire the ship with hundreds of thousand elements! Few days ago the newest cruiser for Caribia from Meyer dockyards in Turku, Finland. That ship is even bigger and more fine tubed than any cruiser before. The cost of manufacturing was over 1billion dollars! Does this make sense to build this huge, moving entertainment centers? Well, maybe not, but the demand is there. So... Bigs get bigger.

    It has been five years since Ive been on Symphony but, Iam going back on her really soon. Captain Rob and his crew have done a beautiful job running that ship. Every inch is just absolutely beautiful. People who call it a monstrosity havent been on it. That ship has a space for everyone individually and then some. Try finding that on another boat. I betcha that you cant!

    • @cyninbend
      @cyninbend Před 5 měsíci

      We never saw one of those spaces on this doc! Not a swimming pool, a lounge, and the only bar was empty, just an ordering tablet. Not a room, a spa, a massage, a sauna.
      The only entertainment was a performance on the ice, with ice skating during the day--what passengers are getting away from. No sunshine except on the docks, and no ports of call, just the dock. Antiseptic?
      Do they go places where people can visit a white sandy beach or scuba dive? Do people lounge in the sun by the pools? Or just shoot thru a water tube in a dystopian world--we never saw a room in any price range, and not a balcony or a window!
      The videos posted by employees of cruise lines of their rooms and jobs are more inviting than this behind the scenes doc that forget what was in front of the scenes, why we;'d want to be there.
