In a park on the outskirts of Baltimore, a group of spectators gathered to cheer on friends, parents and significant others. Fans kneeled along the sides of a grassy field, while a few people lounged in fold-out chairs perched under trees.
The scene was set for any soccer, lacrosse or baseball game. But instead of shortstops and center-fielders, they cheered for wizards and warlords.
Darkon fighters prepare for battle at Oregon Park.
It’s called Live-Action Role Playing, or LARPing, where players dress up as fantasy characters and fight one another with foam weapons.
Movies like “Role Models” and “Knights of Badassdom” have caused LARPing to gain more notoriety, but because of the mainstream portrayal of role-playing games, the title of “LARPer” usually comes with a stigma.
“I think in a satirical way they touch on what this is, but you’re not going to get accuracy out of a raunchy comedy,” Gerard McNeal, longtime LARPer, said of movies like “Role Models.”
McNeal, 43, is the former president of Darkon Wargaming, one of the largest LARPing clubs in the country.
In LARP, players battle one another using fake foam swords and other hand-made weapons. They are also encouraged to create a character, whose persona a LARPer adopts while they play. Characters have elaborate background stories that include alternate skills, family lives, religions and relationships.
Players are often accused of using the game as an unhealthy escape from their real lives, but most participants hold steady jobs and have social lives outside of the game, McNeal said.
“People view it as an escapist thing, that it’s not just a fun activity you can do like a videogame,” he said.
Twice a month, Darkon attracts a crowd of a hundred or more to park grounds throughout the Maryland area. It’s not only the most consistently attended LARP clubs, it’s also one of the most inclusive, according to Alynna Lunaris, aka “Foxglove.”
Lunaris, 45, finalized her transition to become a woman nearly 15 years ago, and since then has never found a more welcoming community, she said.
“I have not seen this type of acceptance in almost any other community, so I do think it’s quite unique,” she said.
Lunaris even got married surrounded by her Darkon friends. In May, Lunaris tied the knot with Christina, aka “Bunny,” her partner of nearly four years.
In Darkon, there are no stigmas, she said.
“It’s actually really nice to say and very unusual to say, that there is no transgender community [in Darkon]”,” Alynna Lunaris said. “There is no difference. In the group I’m one of the people, one of the girls.”
And although the character names and weapons are fake, LARPing had some real life lessons to pass on to its players, according to Ianje Castellanos and Sev Gedra, two Darkon fighters.
Castellanos, aka “Fyxe,” was a shy bookworm before she started LARPing at Darkon, she said.
Fyxe uses red contact lenses to give her character a unique twist.
“It just gave me something that I could excel at for the first time in my life,” she said. “I was one of those closeted nerd kids, always behind like a computer, reading a book kind of thing.”
But LARPing, and Darkon specifically, made her learn to make her voice heard, she said. Gedra, who goes by just “Sev” in the game, agreed.
“Some people have louder voices than others, so if you want your voice heard, making it heard is important,” Gedra said. That lesson has helped her not only with wargaming, but also in the business world, where she is a costume maker, special-effects makeup artist and welder, she said.
For Gedra and Castellanos, Darkon is a place where their imaginations and strong personalities can thrive. And dressing up in costumes gives LARPing the extra bit of “flair” they like.
“Why the fuck not?” Castellanos said. “It’s what I want to be.”

(I was a tiny, 8 y.o girl😂) I felt tiny, which is what granted me the name "Sluthe the goddess petite" 😅 (She had a badass backstory too) Anyway, they made me their leader, they asked me before we went into battle what our plan for attack was. This was when I was getting into watching Vikings so.... When the other side yelled charge, I got to shout "Hold............ SHEILD WALL!" And everyone put their shields up, and it. WAS. AWESOME! To sum it up, we won. And I still larp to this day. (Tho, now the name is Laylith the Blood Jotuun, but still😅)

    • @windspast
      @windspast Před 8 lety +32

+Phil Moufarrege That's where you are wrong. LARP is a honor base system much like air softing. It encourages chivalry and taking hits like an adult. Are there people who come with those attitudes? Sure, but they don't last long. if I hit someone, and they don't take the hit, I first give them the benefit of a doubt. Maybe they didn't feel it. We are all wearing armor. With adrenaline, it's easy to not feel shots. So I hit them again. If I can hit them once, then I can hit them twice. If they still don't acknowledge my shots, then I hit them harder and harder until they do. Others will do the same. But we will never accuse someone and say "I hit you, you're cheating." That's not what the game is about. They will eventually acknowledge the hits themselves because it's silly not to.

Yes, but it doesn't deserve it here ;-) No, really, I can see a change in the NERD-factor here in europe:
If you are LARPing with a high level of costume-design and acting attitude, mixed with some basic research of cultural/historical background of your clothing, LARPing is quite accepted...
But mixing different genres might be creativ, but it really looks NERDish in 95% of all cases...
Just like the one in the video at 0:45 with the stupid NVA-helmet and the piercings, the modern protective gloves... this one would be called NERD even here in europe...

there are some LARP systems in the U.S. that focus more on realism but this group and a few other of the larger ones are more of a foam fighting group. they hit much harder with safer weapons. The groups that allow more real looking weapons are limited to medium or light contact fighting because of their insurance generally

Foam wouldn't really fly well, but I've seen battle reenactments where rubber-tips were used. They hurt like a bitch if you're unarmoured but they fly as straight and true as a real arrow would.

Fcreveryoung Dagorhir and Belegarth use exactly that. Real arrows that are blunted and then have a large foam tip grafted on. They fly surprisingly well and don't hit all that hard. I have been hit in the face by arrows numerous times and have suffered no ill effects.

Depends on the build, I suppose... as well as the poundage of the bow you're firing it from. Foamnhave gas trapped in them so they tend to much lighter and also can push inwards (on themselves) when colliding to transfer less kinetic energy... hence why they hurt less.

Fantastic. I want to be a part of it! The only thing that is confusing to me is with LARP, Star Trek cons, cos-play, etc, there are always people commenting in the interviews, saying "people see us as weird, but we're just normal people." or "I'm not one of the people that are completely over the top like some." Why is it necessary to say this? There is no reason to prove normalcy. I agree that many ordinary boring people make fun of creative people that are involved in these activities. My response to that is to say yes, in the eyes of boring average people who can't think of anything more interesting to do than follow a major sports team while drunk, and gossip about people that are slightly different than them, I am a weirdo, and I hope that differentiation remains strong throughout my life. I have no desire to fit in with that level of normalcy, and no desire to convince them that I am just normal like them. I do not mean that in an antagonistic way, but we have nothing to prove to them whatsoever. I'd rather say hell yes, I am very different from you. Now if you don't have anything interesting to say or suggest as an activity, please let me get back to hanging around the fun creative people who are LARPing, SCAing, StarTreking, cosplaying, et al.

However, I do say this to educate and not to belittle you or anyone else here, but only true marriage can be in the presence of God and with God. True marriage can ONLY be between a man and a woman, because God brought women and men together so they may fully join in their love. Not two men and not two women. Marriage is when a man, a woman, and the Lord our God all join and become one. The immorality and evil going on here is the furthest thing from marriage. I don’t want to sound mean or hateful. I’m only spending my time writing this, because I’m doing my part as a Christian. Keep this or flush it, but it’s up to you. The sin and evil doesn’t come from loving the same sex, but comes from the physical and lustful acts with the same sex. Love the sinner, but hate the sin, and remember that the Lord our God is forgiving and desires to forgive us all for our sins. Wouldn’t you desire to forgive your children for their wrongs? I might be strongly biased on this, LARPing in Europe, but I have a hard time to see something that has character interactions primarily based on hitting each other as LARP, no matter if you dress up. Where's did the "RP" in "LARP" go?
I'm not saying that this can't be fun, or that they shouldn't have fun with it - but they should not put it like *this* is *the* one way to LARP.
Also, at 1:00: There is *no way* that bit of maille, an open helmet and a few steel plates add up to 70 pounds. That's 20-25 pounds, at best. A full late medieval plate armour (hardened steel completely covering you) typically weighs 20-30kg, so 45-65 pounds.

+DRSNova I see what you're saying (as do many of the players in these types of games), but you *are* still playing the role of a fighter who is killing people, losing limbs, and dying--even though you aren't actually doing any of those things. That's what classifies it as a LARP ;).
Personally, I'd like to see more actual character interaction when I play, but it's still loads of fun ;P.

But are you actually "playing a role" by just being dressed the part? I'm not saying that fighting can't contain plenty of roleplaying, but in the case of this video, it seems to me more like players trying to "win" a game than characters acting out a battle. No banter, no fear, no cries of pain, no playing "dead", no blood or wounds.
To me, that certainly classifies it as "Live Action", but the part about "Role Playing" seems a bit of a borderline case.
But either way, my objection was not the classification *as* LARP, but rather that the video presents this event as if it was the one way LARP is done everywhere.

      @SpiderboyN2Jesus Před 8 lety +1

That's fair about it portraying it as the one and only form of LARP, but what they're saying about it, and the participants is still true across the board, right? That we're all just normal people having fun and not weirdos trapped in another world all the time, lol XD.
Anyway, you do more than just "dress the part"; you go into battle and pretend to lose limbs and/or die. Sure, it is just barely a Role Play, but it is still a Role Play ;P.

Oh, sure, no objections there. Where I live the "weirdos lost in a fantasy world"-critizism isn't even a thing anymore. When there's a report in a newspaper or on tv about a game, it's more "adults having harmless fun".
When you say that people pretend to lose limbs...how does that happen, exactly? Hiding your arm behind your back and continue fighting? The way we play is very much "show, don't tell", and it would be something like this: Scream and go down, using lots and lots of fake blood, possibly a prosthetic, then either doing complicated and long battlefield surgery that will likely take the remainder of the event to heal or...bleed out and die. For that reason, it is also hardly ever done as a result of a random hit on a battlefield. It would incapacitate players for too long. Broken limbs, cuts and bruises are far more common.

    • @SpiderboyN2Jesus
      @SpiderboyN2Jesus Před 8 lety +2

Mainly we stop using the limb. We drop our weapon and continue fighting. Most people put it behind their back (or go down on one knee, if they lost a leg), but I don't think it's required in most of these games. It's all about simulated (or rp-ing ;P) the loss--or at least incapacitation--of a limb.
Your way sounds needlessly complicated; I'd prefer to use my imagination than to simulate all the blood and gore visually. Our fights are all about keeping it moving more like a real battle. I would think you'd have to stop and gather all the blood and prosthetics to act out a scene like that (which, like you said is why you don't usually do it).
Also, one could argue that the way we lose limbs is more of a role play than the way you do it, considering how much of it is physically represented in your game ;P. Sure, we don't act it out--or don't have to anyway, we're free to do so if we like--but still, lol ;P.
I'd like to find a way of merging the fighting rules from our game (with some obvious adaptations) with straight up LARPing. I've mentioned it to some people, but I don't think anyone in my area is invested enough to put for the effort to do something like that :/.

I tried to get into this about 2 years before this was uploaded. After I met the group *once* I was kicked out. Apparently because I didn't recognize someone I had met, once, while drunk, in a dark concert hall.
Some of the people were friendly, but my experience was not at all how it's being portrayed here. Most took social awkwardness and assholery to new levels. There was *A LOT* of gatekeeping from people who had been in the hobby for a long time.

Like it says in the video, they have a sorta ministry for ethical issues like hurting someone in a way that violates the rules primary, but cheating (or stealing!) would be included in that.

So honestly I’d recommend asking them if you want it expanded on. What I explained is just what they told us. I’d add though that these guys seemed to enjoy the game for fun. I think some of the game’s thrill is the simulated representation of combat. Would you have fun playing a video game where you’re invincible?
I’m sure some people fudge it and stay standing once in a while when they’re supposed to go down, but it seems that’d ruin the fun and people would start to notice.

I learned that the first time when i went from school where everybody judge people and they go in groups. and then i went to an animator school and everybody was some level of nerds but every body was different and every body was just accepted for who they ware. It was awesome!
