Did Giles SABOTAGE Kerr - UK Olympic Trials Reaction

  • A reaction and analysis of the UK/British Championships 2024 which also acted as Olympic qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympics. I break down the men's 800m, 1500m and 5000m final especially looking at the collision between Elliot Giles and Josh Kerr. Was it intentional or a simple accident?
Trying out a slightly new video style with this one that would allow me to upload much more regularly and consistently. Its a bit rough around the edges right now but let me know what you guys think of this style and topic of video!

Giles left room for Kerr when he tried to push the others to the outside then he tried to shut down the room for Kerr after Kerr had already gotten there. It was too late to shut it down by then. He caused the collision 100%

Giles cuts Kerr off at 180m, hence he falls off the pace a bit; in the main straight Giles drifts out to hinder the runners passing him on his right but when Kerr slips up on his left, Giles cuts back to block Kerr and causes the collision- imo Giles should be DQ and not go to the Olympics.
The rule in athletics is you may not change lanes or weave in front of other runners to impress them in the home straight, a/b auto DQ.

No way Elliot did that on purpose. Watch his CZcams vlogs. He’s such an advocate for the sport and middle distance running in the U.K. He speaks so highly and positively about his follow competitors, especially the other Brits. He 100% deserves the third spot. I love Jake and would always want him on the team, but I’m just not sure he’s fit and Elliot has been running on the circuit loads and was heading for a top 3 finish. Like pretty much everyone commenting, the contact looked to me to be unintentional. But I have had concerns that with athletes willing to cheat using drugs, etc., are there any willing to intentionally take out a top runner, either to improve their own chances in a big race, or perhaps accepting payment from another runner who wants to increase their odds by eliminating the favorite? Nothing surprises me these days.

  • @tulyar57
    @tulyar57 Před 7 dny +44

I agree that the Giles/Kerr collision was most likely accidental. The interesting thing was that with Josh Kerr, the 'racer mentality' took over. The gap on the inside wasn't really there and he had no need to barge through as he wasn't looking for an 800m Olympic place anyway. This is not meant as a criticism of Josh but that the selection procedure seems arbitrary. Hudson-Smith, Hodgkinson and Kerr all ran events they had no intention of competing in. I thought the brutal system of the USA 'first three' at the trials in each event was suspect but it seems much more transparent than ours.

It was pretty clear Giles had nothing left and made a desperate attempt to block despite there being two whole lanes of room for the two to run. Had Giles stuck to the inside of lane 1 from the start, Kerr would have went around into lane two. Because Gikes left the inside of lane 1 open, he made the pass there. Giles had no right to close down the space after already being passed. He should be suspended and Kerr should go through as he clearly would have placed top two.

I like Josh Kerr, but I don't think Giles intentionally cut Kerr other off, despite what people say. I think it was just a "racers instinct" (or something?) thing where you see someone behind you and you try to make sure they aren't passing you, because Giles probably felt Kerr behind him and probably heard him breathing and probably paniced and try to swing his arms out to have Kerr not pass him, although that's probably very unlikely and I'm just reading too much into this. Feels bad for both Giles and Kerr, however Kerr is not the biggest fan of the 800 it seems like, so probably not as big of a blow to Kerr as it was to Giles. I hope they recover well, they still ran a great race even if they didn't completely cross the line.

As an 800m runner, it's quite ballsy for Kerr to take the inside lane when it wasn't entirely safe to do so. With how fast the 800m is, split decisions at the end are extremely dangerous and risky. From my perspective, Kerr was being sloppy. Giles shouldn't have drifted off of the inside lane, but its common when you're emptying the tank. I think he instinctively closed the inside of lane when he felt the presence, but I don't think it was a petty attempt - if it were, his arms would've been more involved. Their legs collided...
Either way, I find it hard to read comments that are coming out to bat wholeheartedly for Kerr. The collision is much more complicated... Giles is less popular, so it's clear that people will back Kerr, but remember Giles is just a dude. Y'all making him sound like he's a bad person, when it came down to olympic dreams and being 105% fatigued.

Agree 100%; if you try and pass on the inside of another runner in the finishing straight you are asking for trouble. Yes you might get through a small gap on occasion but you have to expect that in the majority of races you are going to get blocked off. Kerr took the gamble - and it didn't pay off. No blame on Giles; I agree that he should get the third spot in the 800.
Two general comments. Firstly, we are breeding a generation of runners who can run fast times in paced races but are all at sea in championships when there is nobody there to set the pace.
Secondly, the fairest way to select the team is the American trials system - first three across the line go to the Games. It might not be the best way to select your team to win the medals possible but ti is the fairest way.

That also means that probably most of those "views" weren't genuine views where someone actually WATCHED it, but merely the auto-plays that got triggered when the web page is first loaded, or when scrolling past where the video is. View counts for embedded videos are total BS.
The other explanation is someone paid a click farm/bot farm to artificially inflate the view count. Giles sure tried to sell it. He drifted left awkwardly then acted like he got hit by a sniper. Kerr would have cleanly passed him. The fall did not rob him of a top 3.

You SAW him running with his shoulders at an angle, knowing the runner was there. If you like American football in track events, you will make excuses for him. Mixed martial arts and running.
I'm sure you would love someone moving in to sut you off in rush hour traffic.
If you feel that running should be a contact "sport", alternate events using tripping, elbowing, shoulder-checking could be invented.
Call it track hockey, and for even more fun, arm competitors with switchblades, or, better, machetes.

    Giles cut off Kerr TWICE.
When you say Kerr fell off at 180m he didn’t he got cut off and had to quickly slow down and get passed as a result. Then Giles swooped from the outside to the inside of lane 1 during his kick. Giles shouldn’t go, he definitely at least did one of those intentionally and deserved to get knocked.

Yeah, it’s annoying how we can’t watch full races and have to contend with the last 200m of a race. I love the build up, the strategies and tracking the pace. We need to take a step back from this instant gratification shite that has been imposed on us. The same with spoilers in the thumbnail and titles. Content creators are sacrificing our viewing pleasure for views. I get it, but it’s so annoying.

Kerr absolutely at fault. There wasn’t the space. They’re all running on lactic, lungs busting. Kerr hugged the rail from the bell and tried to bitch kick it. Plus, UK athletics need to get a grip. Kerr should not be ‘having a laugh’ and just trying out the 800 for fun.

This is the risk you take passing on the inside, the runner in front can slam that door shut at any time. Athing Mu leaves the inside pass open constantly. It looks like Josh had enough position here to use his forearm if he wanted but that could be the angle of the camera. We all know Coe would have placed an elbow here 😊.

If anything Kerr took Giles out - there was no room there and he should have given a vocalization or some indication he was coming through. Kerr also should have seen Giles arm carry was all over the place and it was risky pushing through.

He is the quickest British and at his best he is a consistent 800 guy and wightman ran 3:47 giles is just not as good as wightman. In NOT a single event and defenetly not big championships he races very immature and pushing 40
He got like only one medal in his career 10 years ago, wightman is world champ and over European champs 800m silver medalist…he is objectively much better

In a prime vs prime Wightman is more accomplished I agree. However he has not looked in full fitness this season because of the stress fractures he had last year. Giles has been racing consistently and getting solid times (and I want to see him succeed) which is why I think he should race instead of Wightman this year.
