Impossible to say to be honest as it depends on you, how much you practise, how dedicated you are, your skill and aptitude level etc etc.

I'm on the position exercises in lesson 24. I'm finding it much harder to sight-read the music with the two positions, so I've written above any note where the string and/or position changes. Am I making it harder for myself in the long run by doing this?

No - not really. There is no reason why you cant put some finger numberings in to just help you out a bit and remind you of what position youre in. I just wouldnt do it for all notes....
