Our country DID try to get rid of the electoral college TWICE, but failed both times because to some people (specifically senators in the south) it is the only way they feel represented.
It's an antiquated idea that needs to be abandoned ASAP.

Making every vote count the same is called “proportional representation”. It’s how voting works in Germany; the system was put in place after World War II to ensure that a dictator could never take power there again. And it worked so well, we here in NZ copied it.
It does almost inevitably lead to coalition politics: you get a range of political parties in Parliament, none with a clear majority, so they need to figure out how to work together to get things done. But most of us see that as a feature, not a bug.

Did you know that Senators used to be appointed, not elected? Do you know what Amendment changed that? The fun thing is that the electoral college was put in place *specifically* so that when the general public, which they didn't hold in very high esteem, voted for an idiot the electoral college would vote for an actually viable candidate instead. It was for the specific case of idiots voting for an idiot that they wanted an extra layer between the vote and the candidate. That's specifically why they aren't required to vote according to what the public votes say. That and due to the slow travel and large distances they foresaw that new facts might be known in Washington that the voters didn't know about when they made their vote, so the electoral college was to take new facts into account and change the votes as they saw fit to avoid a scandalous candidate.
Over time it's turned into the messy shamble that it is now, where the only purpose of this system is to add extra hoops, to devalue voters in cities over rural voters, and generally just create one of the worst free election systems in the world.
