Two totally different guitarists. Malmsteen is all speed and show, but mostly plays the regular typical scales. Holdsworth on the other hand is not just a fast player, but plays very unique lines with original sounding chord progressions hardly anybody could come up with, making him unmatched.

Regular typical scales? What would those be?

Nah, he'd probably be baffled then have a chuckle. Musicians respect each other; even novices. They know how bloody hard it is master an instrument.

THE THING IS THAT MALMSTEEN ALWAYS SAID IN MANY INΤERVIEWS THAT HE ADMIRED HOLDSWORTH AND HOLDSWORTH ALSO SAID THAT HE ADMIRED MALMSTEEN. THEY BOTH ARE OBVIOUSLY THE TOP PLAYERS AT THEIR STYLES. AND THEY ARE COMPLETELY MISUNDERSTOOD BY MANY WHO TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY. DONT COMPARE. JUST ENJOY THEM.

I don't think comparing these two guitar players is a good idea. Both do their own thing, and have an incredible technique to do it. They are great in their own style, but can't be compared. I like more Yngwie, but it's because it's the music I like. That doesn't mean I know Holdsworth is a beast playing guitar. Both are legends.

Malmsteen did say Holdsworth’s legato was amazing, he didn’t compliment very many other guitarists that I can remember.

Two totally different styles of playing. Can’t really compare. As a personal preference, I’ll take YM any day of the week and twice on Sundays cuz I’m a prog metal junkie. That’s just what I like. AH is incredible, no doubt. But I’m more of a metal guy. Been a YM fan since the mid 80’s.

Comparing Holdsworth to Malmsteen is like comparing Husain Bolt to Roger Federer:
Both guitarists are (or were, RIP Allan...) phenomenal and have proven themselves over and over again. But they're still many miles apart in their approach to this instrument.

Yngwie took blues and classical and put into rock so he took from what had been done before, Allan was a true innovator of the guitar and truly unique. Who's better coz they both can play fast is just silly....

    そしてアランはレガートプレイのみだと思われがちだがピッキングプレイも実は素晴らしい
    イングヴェイはその両方を兼ね揃えていた🎸

say what you want but i was far more hype for yngwie's clips. only dull people care more about absolute peak jazz wankery over rock n roll energy... yngwie absolutely attacks the strings while allen is doing a boring recital of nothing in particular. zero emotion behind it at all

In 1984 Yngwie was the most exciting electric guitarist on the planet. Holdsworth is amazing at playing over difficult progressions, and is very smooth, clever, mathematical etc, but to me, and I'd confidently say the vast majority of guitarists, his playing is unmelodic and boring as f×+k! Sacrilege to the arm folding, naval gazing jazzers, I know, but there is an obvious reason why Yngwie (et al) were selling millions and selling out stadiums, whereas Holdsworth could regularly be found playing the dog and duck. Course, he kept his integrity, I suppose. 🙄

Love Yngwie, but "sold millions"? The only country he has a certified album is in Japan.

Shredding more or less sounds like Mario brothers sped up. Sure, it’s fast but mindless. Holdsworth was deep.

    • @isaiahmarquez9717
      @isaiahmarquez9717 Před 2 měsíci

Hate to break this to you, but what Holdsworth is doing IS shredding. I get nothing from it. It’s like having a conversation where all the words are rearranged and spelled incorrectly to boot. It’s gibberish.
Malmsteen using harmonic minor, diminished, and altered is actually a musical language that can be followed.

Not in some ways…Fascinating how two guys at the top of their game can make the same instrument sound completely different in the hands of another master.
Yngwie with his aggressive alternate pick attack and sweep picked arpeggios in a classically influenced style, well aware he is in the spotlight of a crowd and determined to leave the audience in awe…Whereas Allan the smooth legato intervallic operator seems bound on a journey with his eyes closed, transfixed in a zone but in total control of his finger flourishes and miraculous musical passages…
Have a great day and thank you for commenting. 🎸
