I was a nurse for years. I had a patient that was dying, he was in his 90's and from Russia. We bonded over gemstones, talking about them daily. One day, he had a person that was at the nursing home where he lived, bring him a small package. He gifted me a 1.80 CT Russian Alexandrite that had been in his family for decades. He passed away 2 days later.
I still have the gem stone in my safe and am afraid to have it set. Most jewelers send things out to have them mounted.
I have found a small family owned jewelry store just recently that does everything in house. I have an appointment to see the owner, as he is the metal man, as they call him. Wish me luck.

Sapphire is the best engagement ring in my opinion. I would love Opal but it’s too fragile.

I bought my wife moissanite and the fire is absolutely amazing--every color of the rainbow. People who casually see it say it's the sparkliest diamond they have ever seen, not realizing that's not what it is. Stays cleaner than a diamond too because it repels oil. I would definitely recommend it.

I don't care for white diamonds at all. I love fancy colored stones. It's hard to imagine Fluorite would be a good choice. It's so fragile. I'm so clumsy. It'd be bad. Tragic even 😩

  • @largent45

That was interesting. Most people dont stop to think of alternatives as worthy. I think the alexanderite is a beautiful alternative to diamond for an engagement ring. Its rare and tbe color is exquisite. But to often, unless you really know your stones or have a way to test them on the spot, you can end up buying a lab created stone or treated stone without knowing. But its would have to be my favorite alternative. The sapphire is also lovely but again, you would have the same problem with buying a lab crated stone, over a natural gemstone.

I actually have about a 5 inch piece of that black carborundum. My grandfather brought it home from somewhere and it lives in a flower bed at their house for 30 years. They both passed and I took a lot of the rocks grandma had scattered around decorating flower beds. It did take a couple of trips through the Sonic cleaner to get all of the Moss off of it, but it looks really nice again now.
One of my other favorites is just a big round, orange and white Rock about 10 inches across. It has a rough surface and Grandpa called it his petrified Sasquatch brain lol

That carborundom specimen looks real close to a specimen I have but was a result of running an electric currant through a oil well drilling bit to clean it. The material would crystallized making it easier to break off the bit. Sorry if I spelled the name of that last specimen wrong.

This is the first time I've seen one of your videos, I found it quite informative and interesting. Alexandrite is truly beautiful. I believe it's mostly lab created these days as it's so rare and can be found nowhere else on earth. I'd be interested in seeing something about spinel - like sapphire it comes in all kinds of colours, and at at 8 on the Mohs scale is fairly durable. It's also less expensive than sapphire. Topaz is also around an 8, London blue topaz (a deep, almost inky blue) had a moment a year or so ago. A good alternative for the more budget conscious bride to be. 😊

I am partial to sapphire and alexandrite myself. I wish you had shown more of the natural alexandrite stones that were in the box though. The natural specimen was stunning. The stone in the ring is clearly a lab created alexandrite and that wasn't mentioned at all. I like synthetic alexandrite because it's affordable but I think we should be clear when something is natural or synthetic. Since this is a channel made by a jewelry retail company I would expect them to be clear when something is lab/synthetic and when something is natural/mined.

I was a little bit disappointed with this episode. It was interesting - your videos always are - but I didn't think the gemstones featured weren't really that different from the mainstream and although the fluorite was rather different - and beautiful - it was deemed impractical due to its fragility.
Would it be true that the setting can affect the viability of a stone as an 'everyday' engagement ring? My engagement ring is a moonstone in recycled silver - only a 6 on the Mohs scale but it has survived three decades of environmental activism, vegetable growing/gardening and goat farming. In fact, it has survived longer than the marriage it heralded!😆
