      I have question is the lab emerald actual beryl or is some other material like corundum?, as far as liking things the side by side comparison and scientific facts that help to easily differentiate the stone is great the other parts are good to I especially enjoy gems so it’s hard for me to not like the entire thing

    • @gems
      @gems  Před 3 měsíci

      If it says "lab emerald" then it should definitely be beryl, and will almost certainly be colored green by chromium, like the most prized emeralds. I can't speak for other companies, but anything else should not be labeled as such. If it were actually corundum or any other material than beryl, then it should be labeled as "emerald simulant"

    Very interesting. My take on Moissanite cut stones is, if your going t buy a manmade diamond get a Moissanite . You might as well go full "fake". Lots more bang for your buck, more sparkle and a bigger size for the same price.
    As a gemstone collector I might add Moissanite to my collection only as an example of manmade material.

      When I will buy a labmade diamond in the future it won't be a cut one, and the moissanite would not work as replacement since I want a natural coarse octagon diamond shape. I don't care for cut and polished diamonds, but the coarse crystal shapes really suit my preferences. I want lab moissanite for moissanite reasons and lab diamonds for diamond reasons. They two gems are not interchangeable for me.

    Great episode. I loved the hexagonal crystals in that gigantic chunk! As for moissanite vs. diamond, for me it's not about trying to simulate diamond -- it just has so much more fire and brilliance that I rather like to think of it as gemstone of its own. Almost like rutile, but hard and durable enough to wear. And the colors they're available in are stunning. A while back you also featured TurtlesHoard's gemonstones on the channel, and they had an incredible dichroic yellow/blue moissanite -- easily the prettiest version of it that I've ever seen. :)

    • @berthaadamson1225
      @berthaadamson1225 Před 3 měsíci +1

      My understanding is that natural moissanite is not only extremely rare but found in extremely tiny sizes. I imagine if a crystal was ever found large enough to facet we would be talking Sotheby’s Auction House prices.

    • @gems
      @gems  Před 3 měsíci +1

      It is practically impossible. I've been told, in the past, that the sum total of natural moissanite discovered wouldn't make a pair of earrings. I've heard of some recent discoveries that would overrule that, but still we're talking so ridiculously rare it would probably be straight to the museum.

    Nice discussion of Moissanite. Would have been interesting to compare dispersion of a green one with a demantoid garnet I object less to manmade moissanite because it is a stone almost impossible to find in nature so you always know you are getting manmade. And considering what you have to pay for a diamond of equivalent clarity and size you should be buying from a reputable source that won’t try to substitute fraudulently.

    • @gems
      @gems  Před 3 měsíci

      Good suggestion! Maybe next time. I will say, having had both in unboxings in the past, it was much easier to get spectral colors out of the green moissanite than it was from the demantoid.
