Frank, Maria Rita is a Elis Regina's daughter. She's singing "Como nossos pais" or "As our Parents". It's not a simple cover, it's more than this. Listen to this: 8:35 knowing about a child who lost his mother with 5 years old.
5:56, "...and the appearences, indeed, do not decive...", slapping her own face in an almost angry way, is even more powerful, considering all the dirty things critics used do say about her performances.
I think it's interesting to note the reason why her performance of this song sounds more "relaxed" than her mother's has a lot to do with the fact that Elis' version was recorded during the military regime while Maria Rita's has a couple decades of distancing from that period. Elis' performance is definitely angrier and feels more raw because she was living it, seeing her friends "disappearing" or being exiled by the government every day. That of course doesn't take any merit from Maria Rita as she's got a great voice and you can still feel the strength of the words she's singing, even if her personality isn't as confrontational as her mother's.
Well observed. Also, when Maria Rita sings songs recorded by her mother she is also telling the story of her mother, not hers. On this particular song it comes across not as the protest this song is about but like she is telling something from her past, because essentially that's what it is for her.
She's not singing in the same tune of her mother. The original one is D (Elis) and Belchior G or F#m. Her mother had a highter voice, that's why she's singing sweet and her mother needed to scream.
"Como Nossos Pais" was composed by Belchior, a really great singer and composer. He recorded the song before Elis too. This song have diferent meanings when sang by Elis Regina and by Maria Rita. Belchior, and Elis Regina, talking about the dictatorship, the feeling that, even if they were fighting and all, the things doesn't look like they were changing, because of the retrogressive thoughts of the society of the time. At the ending line, Elis points towards a group of puppet dolls, meaning that we are like our parents: puppets from the institutions, government and stablishement. Maria Rita is Elis daughter, and she lost her mom at age of 5. At first, she avoided singing her mother's repertoire, but people still insisted that she sounded like her mother and she watches her mom recordings just to mimic her way of singing. Maria Rita, then, denied that she watches her mom because this make her suffer a lot. She misses her mom and people didn't seem to be empathethic about that. Singing "Como Nossos Pais" ('Like Our Parents') is an act of boldness of her. She wasn't just theatrical at her performance: she was making a statement: yes, she sounds and looks like her mother (hence the slaps on the face), and at the ending line, "We are still the same, and live like our parents" she points towards the Heavens, remembering and honouring her deceased mother.
Thank you for this comment, I was starting to write every word that you just did! It's complex to react to Maria Rita singing especially this song, because there are ALL these questions behind it. Just to add: Maria Rita was 4 years old when her mother died, she was soo little ;( and it was very difficult for her became a singer and sing especially this song. This version is not strong like the original one purposefully, it couldn't be stronger than the original with her mother, never!
After 10 years singing, Maria Rita did a concert to honor her mom. For 10 years she avoided to sing this, because it hurts. But after 30 years of her mom's death - Maria Rota was 4 when her Elis died - she said the honor her, is to keep her songs alive. So in the end, when she sings we are the same and still live like our parents, she points up! To heaven, where her mom is. Now Maria Rita has 18 years on the road, a solid career singing samba. You should react to her singing Cara Valente or Reza
the only person who had the courage to sing this song after Elis recorded it was Maria Rita, because she is Elis' daughter. She was 5 when Elis died ...
That is her daughter. Elis Regina, her Mother, died when she was 4 years old. They are both great. The song was written by Belchior. He was one of the best.
Maria Rita is Elis Regina's daughter, and Maria avoided for a time sing songs of her mother, but in 2012 she announced a concert to sing these songs to honor Elis, cause in 2012 made 30 years of her death. And this song was wrote by Belchior, another iconic brazilian artist.
Frak: look for "Trem Azul", Elis Regina's last show on TV, it is something surreal what she does with her voice in this song. You will not regret or waste time. She does a performance as if she knew it was her end. What happens after 3 minutes should be studied by all musicians in the world because her voice merges with the sound of the guitar as if translating the instrument through the vocal.

Maria Rita and Pedro`s father is Cesar Camargo Mariano, who worked in the recording of the album “Elis & Tom” with Tom Jobim.
As mulheres eram amadas, idolatradras... I have the feeling that when she sings this song it is as a rebuke against those that are always comparing her to her mother. Which is doubly ironic, because this song is the one in the most iconic performance of her mother and consequently one that she is compared to the most. The lyrics talk about not being stuck in the past, people that are too nostalgic and can't appreciate the new for what it is. But people seems to pretty much ignore the advice of the song they love so much. I find that all kinds of amusing.
Questa è Maria Rita, figlia di Elis Regina. Also about your question on the composition, its author is another great Brazilian musician called "Belchior". He was pretty young by the time he wrote this and Elis was already a singer of reference, so she had an important role on making him famous. He's brilliant, though.
Good afternoon, mrs. Frank ... This song is a work created and composed by a singer called Belchior in the 76s. Composed in the midst of the military dictatorship in Brazil, the lyrics portray the disillusionment of a repressed youth, but also speak of hope and the struggle for change If you like songs with smart lyrics, there are other great songs by this singer ... see you soon ...
the original singer and songwriter of this song is Belchior but it was recorded and had greater repercussion in the voice of Elis Regina, Maria Rita and Elis' daughter!
Well... probably someone have already told this here before, but the important to know about this record is Maria Rita was very criticized when she became because the similarity of her voice and the Elis Regina's (her mother) voice, and for years she declined to sing songs of her mother. Finally in the aniversary of 40 years of death of Elis, she decided make a tribute for Elis and made a show, DVD and album singing only songs from Elis' repertoire.
the song is "like our parents" it talks about family and friends being taken, tortured and killed by the dictatorship. Elis Regina sang it and then pointed back saying "like our parents" in the late 70s. this is Maria Rita, Elis Regina's daughter. she doesn't sing her mother's repertoire, because it makes her sad, Elis passed away in 1982, during the dictatorship. Maria was only 4 years old. here she sings the same song "like our parents" and points upwards to her deceased mother while saying it at the end. this is the real deal.
The song is originally from Belchior, a legendary song writter and singer as well. He is contemporaneous with Elis. Unfortunately they are not among us anymore.
Frank , Maria Rita in this show os doing a homenagem your Mother Elis Regina, it's Very emocional tô us , she was Theo best Singer Brasilian. You no know! She does shows for Europe and in Montreux Festival, she die in 1982 by cardiac.

Maria Rita always avoided singing Elis' songs, it was only after she consolidated herself with her own musical work that she then went on a single tour where she sang only her mother's songs.
You should react to Elza Soares, she was named singer of the millennium by BBC radio, she's one of the most important singers of Brazil's history, I think you'd like it!
"Força estranha" tem uma história. É a resposta de Caetano Veloso para Roberto Carlos. Roberto Carlos compôs "Debaixo dos caracóis dos seus cabelos" para Caetano, quando este estava vivendo em Londres, exilado pela ditadura militar.
Maria Rita is phenomenal and paid tribute to her mother. This song is, like no other, a song by a single singer, Elis Regina! Both the interpretation and the vocal ability that Elis gave to this song are impossible to reproduce. Because of this, I believe, most other singers sing it in a different way! Very few singers dare to sing this song! I really liked Maria Rita's version and also Pitty's version! Pitty - Como Nossos Pais czcams.com/video/4CnDmBa4P6o/video.html
Thanks for that video!! Maria Rita is the daughter of Elis Regina. I think it would be nice if you reacted to Maria Rita singing "Se eu Quiser Falar com Deus".
Please check Monica Salmaso singing “Beatriz”. She is far one of the best brazilian singers ever, and the song is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It is well worth it! ☺️
Maria Rita is daughter of Elis Regina! The song was wrote by Belchior, whose said in an interview the song wasn’t about the Military Government and It’s about artists like Caetano, Gilberto Gil and others became comercial/dictators on the Cultural industry of music. The song was originally released in 1976 by Elis Regina Album “Alucinação”, in still for me the best interpretation! 🙏
The difference between Elis (mother) and Maria Rita (daughter) is that Elis was singing against dictatorship, against political torture and murder, and Maria Rita is singing as a tribute to her mother. This is because the first one is stronger and powerful, and the second is kinder and sweet. Maria Rita points to the sky when she say “como nossos pais” at the end, as a reference to her mom, and Elis pointed to her back, as a reference to the past.

I think it's interesting to note the reason why her performance of this song sounds more "relaxed" than her mother's has a lot to do with the fact that Elis' version was recorded during the military regime while Maria Rita's has a couple decades of distancing from that period. Elis' performance is definitely angrier and feels more raw because she was living it, seeing her friends "disappearing" or being exiled by the government every day. eu como interprete concordo com vc . elis sempre sera a unica a cantar essa musica .
Well... probably someone have already told this here before, but the important to know about this record is Maria Rita was very criticized when she became because the similarity of her voice and the Elis Regina's (her mother) voice, and for years she declined to sing songs of her mother.

MARIA RITA IS WONDERFUL BUT HER MOTHER ELIS REGINA IS MORE WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL 👏👏👏👏
Both are wonderful, each one with your personality, individuality and self talent.
Maria Rita always avoided singing Elis' songs, it was only after she consolidated herself with her own musical work that she then went on a single tour where she sang only her mother's songs.
Muito obrigada! Maria Rita é maravilhosa.
Amo essa família de artistas
Shes sings this as a history teller.
Her mother sang as a protest
Thank you🥰🇧🇷👏👏👏
Perfeita, voz linda, talentosa igual a mãe Elis Regina.
This song was written by BELCHIOR ! ! !
LINDA VOZ IGUAL A MÃE.
Sensacional
You should react to Elza Soares, she was named singer of the millennium by BBC radio, she's one of the most important singers of Brazil's history, I think you'd like it!
Frank, this song was actually composed by Belchior, one of the greatest Brazilian singers. I recommend that you listen to it sometime!
Please react to Gal Costa - Força Estranha
Milton Nascimento - Beatriz
Elis Regina - Trem Azul
Alcione feat.
Pitty - Como Nossos Pais

I think it would be nice if you reacted to Maria Rita singing "Se eu Quiser Falar com Deus".
Please check Monica Salmaso singing “Beatriz”. She is far one of the best brazilian singers ever, and the song is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It is well worth it! ☺️
Yes, it is her own version. Elis was Elis. That time was that time.
Essa música é maravilhosa dá arrepio
React Clara Nunes, "O Mar Serenou".
Maria Rita é uma grande cantora
