"Taj Mahal" was composed in 1972 and even influenced other famous composers, such as Rod Stewart, who confessed having plagiarized Benjor on the hit "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?", after coming to Brazil in 1978 to enjoy the carnival ...and ended up being much more successful! Jorge Ben Jor added the blues scale to Brazilian samba, creating his "samba-rock" style. His guitar playing influenced thousands of musicians. His writing style is also very unique, sometimes acting like a journalist describing elaborate scenes, and sometimes being very succinct, like in Taj Mahal ("let me tell you about this love story: the prince loved the princess so much that he built the Taj Mahal for her. That is all."). He also talks a lot about religion and mysticism. He is my favorite.

10:38 The cuíca or puíta (in Angola pwita) is a musical instrument, similar to a drum, with a wooden rod attached in the center of the leather membrane, on the inside. The sound is obtained by rubbing the stem with a piece of wet tissue and pressing the outer part of the cuff with a finger, producing a characteristic snoring sound. The closer the instrumentalist's finger is to the center of the cuica, the higher the sound produced.

Jorge Ben Jor's lyrics are usually quite simple. His geniality lies in the music itself, the marvelous mixtures he makes: Jazz and samba and other stuff. He always produces a very very nice and enjoyable result.
A nice remark about this song is that Rod Stewart used some tunes of this music in his song "Da Ya think I'm sexy". Stewart stayed in Rio for the carnival in 1978 and Taj Mahal was playing everywhere at the time, and so it got stuk in his head.

Rod Stewart plagiarised the chorus of "Taj Mahal" in his "Do you think I'm sexy"; and he had the cheek to say it was accidental. He'd been to Brazil at the time "Taj Mahal" was a big hit playing everywhere and, when he came back home, composed his copy, using the music for the chorus, just like that, "by accident".
