Pros and Cons of My 2015 Lexus GX460 - Hiking Day Special!

- Not a detailed review (there are plenty on YT), but rather a summary of what I like and what I don't like about my 2015 Lexus GX460 Premium. It caters well to my outdoor hobbies, as it's very rugged, comfortable, reliable, durable and capable. If you're looking for a techy, sporty SUV, buy an X5. If you're looking for a reliable, luxury off-roader that will last a long time and you're considering Tahoes, Grand Cherokees, etc. - look at the GX.
This is a Z List Cars Special Episode, as I took a day trip a couple hours from my home to film in a location where I was driving on a rutted dirt road to hike up a steep mountain!

Just purchased a 2014 GX460 and my wife and I love it. I’m glad you touched on the cons more than the pros, the only negatives they have are mostly fuel economy and using high octane gas.
“Ponderous but ultimately secure” I feel like this car gets me
*Insert laughing until crying emoji*
nice review, thanks!
Picking up a 2015 GX 460 Luxury with 28,800 miles tomorrow. Retiring my 2003 Sequoia. I hope the GX is as amazing as my Sequoia has been. Thanks for the video!
Awesome! I think you'll be very pleased with it as a Sequoia replacement. Thank you for watching!
I feel exactly the same way about my 2016 GX 460. It's not the most comfortable vehicle to drive on the highway but the Safety and Security I get while driving it more than makes up for it. Awesome review, I notice guys who drive the GX are really cool dudes. Not sure whats that's about but its just something I noticed on some 4x4 meetups.
Haha well that's good to hear! And yes it definitely feels solid and safe to drive - very well-built. I appreciate the feedback and the comment!
As a GX460 Premium owner, I completely agree with this comment! 🤣
Most of the jerks buy Jeep, Tacoma and 4runner. Gentlemen buy GX!
Yes, we are cool dudes thank you very much 😃
I owned one and it rides awesome in the highway.
Subbed!... i'm actually going later today to test drive a '10 GX for my wife. Even with 160k miles i'm not too worried and hope to keep it awhile. Hopefully we'll use it like you have in the vid!
Thank you for the support! Yeah I really wouldn't worry about 160k on one of these. As long as it drives well and looks pretty dry and corrosion-free underneath, they are a pretty safe purchase. I rented a high-elevation cabin this week on the summit of a large mountain and am amazed at how the GX powers up these steep, unpaved roads. Great adventure-mobiles for sure.
If you want to correct the gear hunting while going up hill (or with adaptive cruise control either step on the gas pedal (trust me, you're not going to break it) or install a aFe Momentum intake; Problem solved. You're welcome! FYI, add ceramic pads, it won't change the brake feel much, but the brakes will become super consistent and predictable (no fading with aggressive mountain driving). Gas mileage in town; you're spot on at 15 mpg in stop and go. I've literally never had anything break after 110k miles, so I don't have an issue with the gas mileage. (Here's why) I don't miss dropping my Mercedes off for several days at a time and spending 4k+ every year on maintenance and with no repair bills to speak of I just put gas in it and it goes. The GX really has one big flaw, it's not as flashy or as sexing as it's competition. But it is reliable as a hammer.
Thanks for the comment! Putting the transmission in manual mode and shifting myself in the mountains fixes the issues for me. Re: Brakes - I replaced the brake rotors all around and that did help with the pedal feel, along with a fluid flush. Also, after new Michelins and and alignment, my steering feels pretty corrected. Truck is very well maintained and has been in the hands of Lexus dealer several times. You're right about the durability - I am now over 100k miles and have only had one issue the whole time - one failed door lock actuator. Drivetrain has been flawless. Yes, as much as I'd love a GL550 or something like that, the ownership costs of a big, V8 Mercedes SUV is not even comparable!
I really like the blacked out wheels on your color 460 and I've seen them with all of the chrome blacked out and they look awesome. That being said, mine is black and I like the original wheel color on mine. I am thinking of at least a Dobinson 2" lift with some bigger tires on the original wheels. Thanks for the great vid.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah I think my truck would look much better if I blacked out the rest of my chrome trim, even with the current color. Lifts always work well on these, and I appreciate you checking out my video!
Excellent off roading vehicles!
They sure are! Japanese Range Rover if ya ask me!

Good fair review
Nice review
Hey, I have the prado diesel. Not being a hater just informing. Inline 4 cylinder diesel (4-D4). Most of them sold here at least are all leather pretty luxurious models (Lexus much more obviously). Great vid!
Thanks for the comment. As you can probably tell, I'm really not educated at all on the Prado models. I appreciate you watching!
It's very nice car I have gx460 2016
Great review! Random question: I test drove a 2013 and loved it as it was peppy. Then test drove 2016 and it felt a lot more sluggish and less responsive. Is there an explanation for this? Is there different tuning? Much thanks.
My 2013 drives tight. No loose on center as you described. 106,000 miles.
Added. The 4.6L is and has been available in the Tundra since 2010 in the 310hp 327 tq form
Mine doesn't feel like there's an issue, as the truck overall drives tight and doesn't really have "play" in the steering wheel, but it doesn't feel quite as locked-in and on-center at 75 mph as its unibody competitors.
@@TheZListCars I always say mine drives like a tank it goes straight until I make it turn regardless the terrain
Same here; 2010 GX.
Great review I have 2015 gx 460 too , same reason I bought one I want a car that I won’t have to pay for inconvenient repairs .
I won't say that I have owned a crap ton of vehicles in my 29 years of driving. But I have owned more than most people. I have 2 Lexus and 1 Toyota in the stable right now. I recently purchased an older 2009 RX350 and I can about undoubtedly say it is the most comfortable cruiser of any vehicle I have owned. I do NOT however like the way it handles. It is not good in that department. Not sporty at all but ride wise I am still feeling good after many hours of straight driving. Never owned a GX yet though
Same feeling on my 2016 GX460. I removed the 3rd row seats, which weighed over 100 Lbs. It drives so much better now
Hmm I might want to think about doing that. I've used them all of about once in four years. I'm almost at 100k miles now and it feels the same as it did the day I bought it!
So what are you left with when you take the seats out. Is there just a deeper hole in the back where the seats were? Or does it still maintain the same deck height, because to me that would be the way to go, get rid of the extra weight.
@@wally6193 Here you go. I installed a piece of plywood to have a new floor: czcams.com/video/0yMsiTHNKIw/video.html Video has English caption.
@@manimalworks7424 thanks I'll have a look
Good vid. I own an '18... I think your review is spot on! I'm considering copying your idea on the wheels... who did this for you? Cost? Thx!
I've since blacked out all of the chrome trim to match. I live near Charlotte, NC and used a company called Alloy Wheel Repair. It cost me $75 per wheel due to a dealership connection, generally I think they charge $150 per wheel to do powder coating and gloss black.
I own a 2016 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition. My dream SUV is a Land Cruiser but the GX is probably the next SUV I get (when that time comes). Nice rig!
Wow this review could not be more accurate
Thanks for watching - I really appreciate that!
The RX brake pedal I own is soft and spongy as well. They are good but you need to push into it for anything to happen
This is a Factory Lexus/Toyota built in ABS…
you talk really well, Sir!
Thank you Sir!
I love the steering feel on these. I don't want tight and precise steering in a big SUV. I drive sports cars for that.
Does yours wander a bit also
Don’t they all come with the KDSS, the steering is awesome and quick. Am I missing something?
I forgot to really add my Closing Thoughts - if you want a luxury SUV that's got all the latest Tech, and is very sporty with lots of power - buy an X5 or a recent Range Rover (if budget allows). If you prioritize proven reliability, rugged capability, space, comfort, and long-term durability and lower maintenance costs and are considering vehicles like Tahoes, Yukons, and Grand Cherokees, the GX might be for you!
As an owner of a lot of high mileage BMWs and Audis over the years, this was a great video for me! I started looking into an SUV to daily drive that would be more reliable so that I could keep one manual car (e46 M3) and use it less to keep maintenance costs down! While like you said, more power or luxury features might be nice, I need reliability over that considering maintenance at even Indy shops can add up quickly with the euro brands. What sold me the most on the GX 470/60 was the forums posts about people being a little upset about a $900-$1200 timing belt and water pump service. I can't think of a time that a small thing didn't go wrong on the bmw and $500 was the lowest it would ever be!
Well X5 or Audi wont last long, this truck will last 20+ years easy if you do regular oil change. Lexus GX470 is number one in reliability. I wont even talk about range rover its junk after 3 years
Good review. What part of NC are you from? I live in Chapel Hill.
Nice! I live in a suburb of Charlotte.
I’m a year late but Cary, NC here
Thank's for this review... I think the old school still dominate the car reliablty... If one would choose an off-road car and you have two options (tahoe and GX 460)...which one shall be the best choice?
Thanks for watching! The GX is going to outshine the Tahoe with regards to off-road performance in almost all cases, but the Tahoe is a very compelling competitor. I'd say the on-road performance and handling of the Tahoe is a smidge better than the GX, but not by much. Both are very compelling choices, but if you want to go overlanding - GX all the way!
Vehicle reviews should be restricted to people who have renewed their drivers’ licenses at least one time. WTF do you know about vehicles? I bet your parents bought that for you, or at least, help with the payments.
I got a ‘12 gx and I love it. Great stereo, who uses nav anymore these days. Pocket puter has got that covered. I’ve got Bilstien5100’s with Icon progressive springs. Brought it up 2.5” in the front and 2” in the rear. Put some tall pizza cutters on it. Massaged the inner fenders with a heat gun, fabbed up my own skid plates and snuck a winch in it. It will go pretty much anywhere. Never put premium in it. These engines run on garbage gas all over the planet. Looking to add rear tire carrier and a roof rack. Contemplating building my own but we’ll see. Thanks for the vid, nice review.
do you put 87 or 89? I just ordered one. In canada premium is reaching 5.45USD/Gal lol
@@greativann hey Ivan, I run cheapest thing they got but, never E85. The ethanol WILL make it ping. Did you buy a brand new one👀
@@johneden7975 Hey yup, ordered a brand new one and it's gonna take 6 months.
@@greativann I don’t know if do all the mods I’ve done to a spanking new one. So I try to find them older but with low miles. When I bought that ‘12 bout 1.5yrs ago. It only had 67000mi on it. Apparently it was a garaged summer only vehicle at some rich lady’s house in Connecticut. But wow a brand new one would be something! You’re gonna love it. Seen em at the dealer and they are gorgeous. Not everyone’s cup of tea but the size of it is great and I occasionally pull a trailer with snow machines, a sidexside, heck I pulled my mini excavator to a job once(very short trip in my neighborhood)V8 power just so nice.
@@johneden7975 I checked the manual for both 12 and 22 model, I guess they shared everything except the looks & some fancy equipment in the cabin. It's our first ever v8 powered car, I was also looking into low mileage used ones. These machines just don't depreciate man! Lots of the pre 2020 facelift models selling around 50-60k with lots of mileage. The newer ones are tagged almost as much as the brand new ones. I'm glad you love yours, it's one of those vehicle that really stand out ;)
I am undecided between this and the sequoia.
I think the GX is going to feel just a little more premium inside and will be a little better off-road, but I think the Sequoia will offer better overall space (third row and cargo space) and most of them have the 5.7, which is a good deal more powerful than the GX's 4.6.
@@TheZListCars I test droved both of them twice each and loved both. If I could, I would buy both of them. Still glad they are somewhat in the same price range.
@@FMF5517 I had that same conundrum and went with the 460. One reason in particular is even though I'm not going to do (real) overlanding, I do as the OP hike, fish wanderlust. I've seen both on back roads and in the hills and the sequoia is much bigger and therefore cannot get into the same tight spots without at the least getting really scratched up. So the size has pros and cons.
How is this just driving around the city ? Is it worth it with the low mpg?
The 4.6L V8 out of the LS460 and the 6-speed auto make for a smooth, torquey and quiet drivetrain around the city, the seats are very comfortable, and the seating position is high with good visibility so it's pretty enjoyable to drive around cities, but you have to decide whether 15 mpg of premium gas is acceptable to you or worth it.
The best for bmw and Tahoe
thinking to trade my 2013 gs350 for the GX, only draw is gas mileage but should only be extra $25 ($35 for GS, $60 for GX) per tank not too bad but idk if worth the trade.
You may miss the handling of the GS, but the ride comfort, ride height, space, and capability of the GX will probably more than make up for it!
Some Prados are decked out
Any updates on this SUV?
I may look at a 2015 GX460 with 102K miles for $27k. (Possibly trading in my 2019 4Runner Off Road Premium)
Unfortunately I traded it for a much less reliable car. If I was smart, I would have kept it forever. Zero issues, as expected, and I parted with it at 114k miles.
I feel the previous body style was nicer looking
Yeah the "spindle" grill can be polarizing. I overall like the way the front end of my GX looks, but it's definitely not for everyone.
Bass nectar sticker on the back window?
Good Catch! Yes, I used to be a big 'Nectar fan and saw his shows all over the country. However, after all of the accusations and allegations, that sticker has long since been removed. I don't know what's been proven and what's not, but I didn't want to be driving around representing him if it was true.
@@TheZListCars definitely.. last time I saw him was 2015 at tomorrow world in Georgia
Is this bigger than a Toyota Highlander? Overall interior
Despite being a larger vehicle with a larger engine that consumes more fuel, I think the space inside is very similar. You get the GX because you want the truck platform, rugged off-road capability, 8-cylinders, and Lexus refinement Highlander is a great value though - might be a better buy for folks who are just looking for space.
I too have a 2022 GX-460 and my wife drives it for work everyday, no hwy and it makes at least 16.3 mpg when we rarely fill up with 87 octane.
We usually put 93 and sometimes 89. Best mileage is when it is on 93 and it makes around 17.2 mpg, again no highways. So not sure why most people are making less.
I get city 16 hwy 21mpg 87 cotaine
Did you have any problems with this SUV?
No, it has been dead reliable for me driving it 60k miles. It has almost 100k now.
What gas type do u use?87?91?93?
It calls for 91, but there is no 91 in NC where I live, so I use 93. Could probably be okay with 87, but I think it will get better mpg and power from using the recommended Premium. Expensive though :(
@@TheZListCars same here, i live in ohio and we dont have 91, so i was thinking i have yo use 93 which is 60c morethen regular
Good review. I’m buying a certified preowned GX460 this month. 30000miles for 45k😭
You really can't go wrong. Yes, they are a little dated on interior and tech by modern standards, but they are so enjoyable in so many ways!
@@TheZListCars Thanks man . I really don’t care too much of the tech stuff. I’m actually old school when talking about cars . That’s way I deleted Q7 and GLS450 out of my list . Pure mechanical makes me feel right. And btw . I would use the saved repair money on the fuel consumption of this GX v8 4WD😃😄
@@FreelikeaBird999 used cars are so expensive right now. I’m crossing my fingers, waiting for the right time to buy, once the bubble pops
Buy 2022, its really good!
I like the GX 470 better.
Uhm reliability..reliability...reliability.Good enough for me
That’s 2015 model? My 2045 model looks almost identical. I guess this look is going to stay for another millennium.
2045 model still rockin' the old 4.6 v8 and 6AT, eh? Sounds like Toyota!
So first of all the Both the LS and GS are powered by the 1UR not UZ. There is no such thing as a “truck” or “car” engine. Second you are comparing this frame on vehicle with unibody SUV’s. Your review is completely inaccurate.
Thanks for the constructive criticism. I don't find the time to do these reviews much, so I know they are relatively amateur quality. I mainly do it for fun, not to be the utmost professional, formal reviewer out there..
I was merely commenting that the 4.6 originated as an engine in a luxury sedan, and was then later used in the truck platform (without DI). I also was clear that I wasn't 100% on the engine code. Thanks for watching.
Also, yes, I was clear that this is a body on Frame vehicle, and I know the X5, etc. Are unibody. They are still competitors, and they are still allowed to be talked about in the same discussion as the GX.
Make yours man
Why is this guy saying all these not so positive things about this truck? He spent 60gs and he is complaining about this and that. Please go away if you just want to complain and cry, go and buy something else. No likes or subscribes for you.
The title is pros and cons. I listed some cons, but I also mentioned a lot of things I like about the truck. I do one video every few months for fun. You're right - I don't have many subscribers. Remember, if you really dislike my videos so much, no one is forcing you to watch.
I can list a lot of pros and cons about my 3 vehicles I drive as well. I am not sure there is 1 vehicle that someone can say is perfect in every single sense for them. I love all 3 of the vehicles I own but there are many things over the years of ownership I think could have been done better. On the 2 Lexus vehicles I own an 09 and 12 MY, there are quite a few ergonomic issues I have and scratch my head every time I try and figure out where I need to go to turn this or that on since each one of my vehicles has vastly different ideas on how to do it yet are all the same manufacturer and at that my Toyota is an 08. I feel that manufacturers should have a theme to each one of their vehicles that make them familiar to operate for people that want to stay in the family. Just an opinion
You're the only one whining & crying Taofik 🤣
