Enjoyed your video. Congratulations on finding a vehicle that is a good fit for you. I really like the 2022 GX460 infotainment center as it addresses all the issues you have with the pre-2022 version. I like the external size of the GX for both parking and driving and I like the ability to do easy downshifting when flipped into manual.
The new infotainment center is super nice. I also agree the size is perfect.
excellent review... a true tank offroad
Fantastic off-road. I’m amazed at how well it does.
Just found your channel! I own a 2019 GX and love it! I've installed a mild Dobinsons lift and Metaltech sliders. Also run 265/65/18 BFG KO2 tires. Looking forward to watching your videos. We also live out west, part time in Las Vegas and Albuquerque and enjoy getting out for day trips in the backcountry.
They are awesome rigs! How are you liking the K02s?
Looks like a great vehicle! Looking forward to seeing you take it off-pavement this year.
I’m excited about upcoming adventures!
great video!
Thanks for watching!
Nice!! The steering wheel is real wood, which is why that parts not heated.
I believe the JK camp table will fit the swing gate, at least it does on the 470.
I'm jealous, makes me want to upgrade my 470.
I didn’t realize it was real. Still kinda odd but nice knowing it’s not fake.
Spot on review! Except the “off-roading only” part. Lol . I have a 2011 GX460 Premium (with the beautiful non Predator front). Purchased in 2017 w/100k
Miles. I’ve put 78k mostly NYC miles on it. Basically driving in circles on a “paved” off road course. 2.5” OME Suspension, BFG K02’s. Durable comfortable and fun driving every day in these semi paved streets. This actual SUV with the body on frame provides an isolating “floating” quality that unibody “crossover SUV” aka Station Wagons cannot. The Lexus extra thick glass also quiets the ride immensely. Funny enough this Labor Day weekend I’m am driving a dealer loaner 2023 RX 350 which are wider and longer than the GX, gets 13MPG in the city to the GXs 10MPG. Yet the RX like other most other unibody vehicles starts to bottom-out once the pavements too rough, whereas I can maintain speed or even accelerate in the GX. The best part of the loaner RX is how bank vault solid my GX feels every time I get back in it. Oh and for the bizarrely controversial swinging rear cargo door, I parallel park 6 times a day on my routes to various construction sites. Even with another car 6” off my rear bumper (cover) I can still open the rear door wide enough to access drawings, tools and even groceries. Keep up he great videos! I do dream about over landing every night.
Love that you enjoy your GX! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Great info! Sounds like you are pretty happy with it. I am curious, what were the main factors you chose this over a 4Runner?
Overall I think the value for what you get is better. Used the prices in our area are pretty similar. The GX being around 1-3k more for similar years and miles. It has more HP, more torq, higher towing capacity and has nicer finishes. All of them have 3rd rows vs only some 4Runners. The 4Runner has better payload, better aftermarket support and looks cooler IMO. Lots going for it as well.
Even though the infotainment system does look a little dated on my 2020 Grand Cherokee WK2 the one thing I do like about it is it there are physical buttons for everything below the infotainment screen except for the heated and cooled seats those have to be accessed via the infotainment screen. I usually use the mechanical buttons for the climate control and also for the defroster rather than having to go through the entertainment screen to access things and if I need to use heated and cooled seats I click those on on the infotainment screen during the start up screen. When I use navigation I simply use my phone & mirror my phone to the vehicles screen if your Lexus doesn’t have that compatibility I know there are aftermarket devices that will allow you to mirror your phone or a tablet to most infotainment screens that may alleviate some of your issues.
I didn’t realize how much of a close competitor of the Lexus was to my grand Cherokee until I started shopping around for the possibility of doing something larger in the end I bought an ambulance.
Awesome insights. I do wish it had just a physical button for all of the climate controls. The phone is the only way to go for navigation the system is just to clunky for practical navigation use. Not a deal breaker but just weird for a rig in the price range.
That’s awesome. A more live in comfort rig is something I’d love to have sometime down the line.
I can't wait to take it out.
We may have to do a trip where we swap rigs for the day and then do a comparison video.
@@BackroadExploration that would be interesting. I wonder how different they feel.
As far as I know, all the wood including the wood on the steering and shifter are real wood.
You are right. I didn’t know it was real.
Spot on review. Its pretty annoying to start the vehicle and the infotainment takes 15 seconds to boot up!
Easy to add mts and crawl as well. With the air suspension it handles better than it should and tows well. Aside from the benefits you mentioned one of the huge advantages is the full time 4WD. you can only get that in the limited 4runner, and in my opinion was a huge step down from the 4th gen to the 5th gen 4runner.
Good point on the 4WD. One of the big selling points I forgot to mention.
The 4Runner is nice. You will see in my latest video my brother has one. But for the price it most doesn’t make sense to me.
You are running Falken Wildpeaks on it, correct? How are you liking them?
Yes. I had them in the Jeep and really liked them. Decided to go with them again. Very happy so far!
@@BackroadExploration Did you get SL or a higher load rating?
Are you thinking about a roof rack for it?
Yes. I’ve picked one up. I’ll cover it in more detail in future videos.
Hate the looks...but they aren't everything in a vehicle. I learned of the capability of these a few years back, but all the local toyota guys swear by just buying a 4runner for the money. I can see the draw of the 460 to stand out instead of just getting a 4runner to off road. I'm looking for a purpose built SUV myself, but I'm waiting as the used market is now crashing. Looking forward to the build/videos dude.
The 4Runner is better looking IMO. It also has better aftermarket support. The drive, comfort and performance of the GX is better. You can’t really go wrong with either.
What lift and tires do you have?
Old Man Emu lift. Falken Wildpeak tires. I’m liking both so far.
@@BackroadExplorationthanks for the reply. Did you do anything with the KDSS during install? What size tires?
How much did you pay? How many miles on it?
$38k with 39k miles.
Isacc told me to watch you
He’s awesome! Thanks for watching.
I'm not overly familiar with the Lexus GX 460 so I was just wondering if it had low range? Does it have lockers? Is it electronically activated or mechanical or is it full-time four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive? Looks like it'll make a great off-roader for what you do. I kind of missed the Jeep but I'll keep watching! Cheers 🤙🏼
It’s very similar to the 4 runner in size and outfitting. But has a V8 vs a V6. It does have low range. It is full time All Wheel Drive with a locking center differential. It does not come with rear and front lockers those would need to be added. I do plan add a rear at some point but not a rush. I went a lot of places in the JK and only used the locker a couple of times out of caution. I definitely miss the Jeep. My plan originally was to get a gladiator but I’ll need a fourth seat in the future
@@BackroadExploration Thanks, sounds like it will serve you just fine. I'm not a big fan of lockers, I've never had them and never needed them. I've been all over Moab and cross country and never missed having them. 😆 Just curious. My 78 Wagoneer is a quadratrac, It'll be interesting to see how that performs in the Backcountry. It has low range too 👍🏻. Way way old school though 😆
Exactly while lockers are nice they are not a must have. I’d love to get an old Wagoneer at some point.
@@BackroadExploration a lot of hard work. You can check mine on the channel.🖖🏽
