Even though I drive a GX460, I would still click on every gx video you made. Great job, and great vehicle.
Good to know. 😉

As a GX 460 owner I can tell you there is no better mid-size SUV on the market. Yes, the mpg is bad, yes it is dated, but the reliability and power in that 4.6L V8 is excellent. I'll pay a little more at the pump to know I'm not going to break down and have long-term reliability that doesn't cost me thousands of dollars out of know where.
As a fellow GX460 owner, I concur!
This is the way.
The 4Runner
Nowhere > know where
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! My wife and I are looking at buying one
The Lexus GX is the 150-series Land Cruiser Prado. These are built to last a minimum of 25 years in the world’s harshest conditions.
You can’t say the same about your Jeep, Bronco or Land Rover.
I'm Kiss Kiss, and I approve your message. lol
Yet I see 25 plus year old Jeeps and Land Rovers on the road every single day.
@@trailrunnah8886 those are restored classics
Answer me honestly, would you take a 25 year old jeep through the empty quarter desert or a 25 year old Land Cruiser/ Land Cruiser Prado?
@@trailrunnah8886 These are enthusiasts for the brand which will stop at nothing to keep them running strong. Even if that means throwing a little money at them.. To be fair, I have heard that the JL or 2019+ Jeeps are a little more reliable than the older ones..
@@johneldepresso think there might be some generalization here. No doubt the Prado has a great reputation and likely there are more still performing their duties than most other models or brands, but it’s not like others are incapable of lasting a similar length of time. The use and maintenance is just as important as what the vehicle is.
The secret sauce of the GX is that its a 4 out of 5 in most categories. Towing? Not the best, but above average. Off-Road? Not the best, but above average. Ditto comfort. Ditto passenger and cargo space. It's big enough to do big car things, but it's way smaller and more nimble than it looks. The turning circle is unreal, the visibility out is better than most and its shockingly easy to drive in town. It's just just a damn fine all rounder. Fun tidbit of info on the center differential. The torque bias can go from 29:71 front to rear to 53:47 front to rear depending on road conditions and traction needs (nominal is 40:60 Front to rear as you said). So long as the front axle never needs more than 53% of the torque or the rear more than 71% then you have forward motion. If the surface demands torque outside of that range, lock the center and boom. 100:0. The front can can 100% or the rear can get 100% and anything in between.
Nice information I think you're from Australia because it is not common for americans to know this stuff.
Anyway you've said the GX is above average off-road hmmmmmm let's talk about Toyota SUV's in usa after the land cruiser/LX the GX become the second best Toyota's off road vehicle due to the information that you've mentioned + it has V8 and kdss system
In terms of towing I don't know what it can tow but it becomes third in towing after the land cruiser/LX and sequoia
Given that people are paying 50k for tacomas and 4 runners that price really isn’t that bad.
People are paying 60k for highlanders
The ugliest trucks as well
I want one and keep it for life.
People pay 50k for highlanders in Cali rn
$50k for 4Runners? Limited 4Runner's MSRP is around $54k.
I like the fact the v8 gives you a better trade in value. No turbo, and that's great
Nothing to break
Thanks for bringing the GX to the trail to show us its full capabilities! And what a stunning view at the end!
Love the GX review and really appreciated you making a 2023 4runner video even though nothings changed!
I love your reviews. Really enjoy when you add ON and OFF roading details like 4x4, wheel size, center torsen differential.
I love watching your reviews. Not only for the content, but as a reminder of how beautiful our state is.
Mountain adventure in a GX?! I'll be watching this video, thanks. Great job! Loved it.
Great reviews, you are quickly becoming my favorite channel. Thanks.
Within the first 5 minutes, I knew it would be a good review. So many technical terms used to describe the vehicle!! Subbed!
We just came back from New Mexico road trip. GX is such a great car for off road, even under snow mountains no pressure at all!
Great review Ryan !
I look forward to watching them every week
I love your reviews for their practicality. But more than that, i love the views of PNW in your videos. Moved to US/Seattle last year and am love with how beautiful PNW is.
Best Car Journalist! Hands Down!
Not gonna lie...these color, its beautiful..fit the car perfectly...and not outdated looks at all 🤘🏻
Love it when I discover new (to me) channels like this. 👍
I love watching your reviews.
Oh, this is the reason I'm so in love with the GX
I've narrowed my search down to the GX and RX for my next vehicle. My head wants the RX but my heart wants the GX. I'll probably end up with the GX thanks to great reviews like this.
Same. Head says RX350h heart says GX. Don’t know yet. GX is bulletproof
what'd you get what'd you get
Same. Ended up with GX, couldn’t stand that revised interior on the new RX 😅
As a 2020 gx owner, who's looking at the new RX 500h because of all the new tech, it's hard to compare. I need to be able to tow my jet ski and boat in the future. For my outdoor lifestyle, I think I'll stick with the gx and get a hybrid for daily commute.
Thank you for showing us if you can sleep in it or not! Very difficult to find information on this for most SUVs
Lol the ending was my favorite part thanks guys
Congrats on your subscription milestone!
I had a question for you: Since you’ve driven both the LX570 and the GX460, which would you buy? Used LX570s are about the same price as new GX460s. The GX has KDSS but the LX has hydraulic suspension. I’m so torn on this decision!
Great job Ryan. The GX460 is indeed amazing. Keep it up ❤️ ✌️
Your videos have become a part of my daily educational content. Please review the 2023 Santa Fe Hybrid AWD on and off-road. Thank you!
Rumor is the LC is coming back to the states. I have KDSS on my 4R TRD OR and it is worth every penny.
Honestly, I’d love to have one of these. My 4Runner is great and all, but that V8 is really tempting
even though I will never buy any of those american cars or versions of cars that are sold worldwide I watch your reviews just for watching. They are really good.
One of the best, of the last of the Dinosaurs!! Toyota/Lexus all the way!!! 💯 Awesome way to start my Weekend, Ryan.. Thank You!!!
Thank you for the very informative review, I really found it useful.
I own a GX460, and I bought it for the 8 cylinder, and the full time transmission.. i dont care about the fuel economy, I want a million mile chassis.
Same thing with me! I spoke with my Lexus dealer and she said that the 2024 GX was going to have a V6 Turbo engine in it and that the wait for it was going to be at least 6 or more months, even longer off I wanted custom colors and a special interior. I wanted a no non-senseold school V8 to drive until the day that I die. This vehicle rides like a 1960s Cadillac Limo- strong, quiet and solid. If somebody wants speed, then do not purchase an SUV!
@@edmundcharles5278 v8 is a beautiful piece of engineering. fantastic choice,
I would love you to get your hands on a 4Runner Limited to explore the differences between X-REAS and KDSS. I'm especially interested in the suspension travel of the X-REAS and how capable that Limited trim is off road with the A-TRAC system but with no lockers or software.
One thing to note about KDSS is it locks out above 11mph and the sway bars are always "engaged" regardless of conditions. This can make the ride a bit rougher when you're doing dirt trails and such as it reduces suspension travel. This is especially pronounced if you're using a stiffer and heavier tire like an all-terrain.
Also, fun KDSS facts. It gives you an extra 1.5" (approximately) of travel both up and down (3" total) compared to a non-KDSS Prado equivalent. So it's a great way to get extra articulation from the factory with the added bonus of on road stability.
You can install a switch to disengage the KDSS at higher speeds. Best of both worlds!
Funny about all this Land Rover came out with the same traction control system and the ace system to make the sway bar gets stiffer when entering corners and in low range super loose for crazy articulation totally Factory. You can watch the old Discovery 2 videos on the streets course doing a slalom with high-speed camera pointed directly at them also testing the Mercedes and the BMW and the Land Rover had the least lean because the ace system would stiffen it up before it started to lean what off-road crazy articulation from solid axles with Ace system letting the wheels go way up in the fenders and not to mention the traction control system that is ABS just like the a track on the Toyotas that still doesn't even work as good as an old Land Rover. If only Land Rover had made things as reliable as Toyota. I always get a kick out of watching so-called newer technology on stuff that was literally 23 years ago and still working on Rovers like mine once you work out some of the Kinks like a better cooling system and more accessible ignition coils but that's easy. The new Land Rovers are ridiculous they're very good off-road but I wouldn't trust one at all. I think the Grenadier is going to be awesome. They're really testing them here in America. In all reality the Jeep Rubicon Wrangler is the most capable front and rear lockers front and rear solid axles front and rear sway bar disconnects. But sometimes people want something that doesn't look like a Jeep LOL I feel the same way. Recently watched on tfl they tested this Lexus and a Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover traction control system worked way better on the spin test from every wheel put up on rollers. It's like the Toyota traction control system just doesn't grab hard enough right away the way even the old Landover kind of and it makes no sense cuz it's not technical as soon as it detects uneven will spend just grab the brake hard but Toyota doesn't they go gentle slowly ease into it and that sucks because it's bad enough you have any delay compared to a locker when getting stuck or not could mean the difference of that one or two seconds of momentum loss but at least make your traction control system more aggressive like Land Rover and it's not hard to do just grab the spinning wheel brake harder the first time
Fantastic video as usual
Man this spec looks amazing when you see it in person
Love your videos, just purchased a 2018 460 myself! Quick question, I seem to remember Driving Sports from my Subaru NASIOC days.. didn't you start as a Subaru only channel?
While the Audio was a little buggy(Once you hit the trail), the video was fun and exciting..
As soon as I got my 2021 GX, the first thing that I did was swap the crappy Duelers for a set of Cooper Discoverer AT tires, and it's a beast now!
nice choice- the duelers are pretty shit even in rain, let alone snow
How much did that hurt your MPG?
@moloono1 Pardon me for the late reply. My MPG has been exactly the same, to be honest. Although maybe 1 mpg less.
@@vadim9342 Wow! That’s great. I’m really thinking of upgrading. Thanks for your time and responses.
I didn’t know you could get black line with non black interior… that’s much better looking imo. Thx
Great viewing from my perspective, thank you. One way they could make me WAY more interested in this thing is just making it look more capable. Reducing the overhangs and and all that bumper. Change nothing about the internals, just give it a better angles of approach and departure and make it look less tubby.
So basically the 2009 to 2012 model years lol
Ryan, Are you an 'upscale adventurer' or just a normal guy with ungodly access to the press fleet? 😉 Since someone is bound to say it, rumors/rumours are afoot that the Prado is coming to North America. I really hope Toyota does not ruin that tall greenhouse by the time the Prado gets here and I also hope the more attainable, 2 door Prado is part of the next generation🤩
interesting rumor 🤔 😏
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD Stay tuned!
PERFECT OFFROAD 😎👍🏻
when you see someone with a 90th yota off road. You know this guy gonna go hard, really hard.
@Driving Sports TV Been watching your reveiw's for quite some time and I love them. If you had the choice to choose between the GX460 2023 and The Bronco Badlands 2023, what would your choice be??
I know both are capable in their own terms, however as you have reveiwed them thoroughly, what would you recommend??
I am torn between the 23 GX and 23 Badlands
I would appreciate your opinion 🙏🙏
Excellent video! Everyman Driver needs to learn a thing or two from you about vehicle.
the gx is nice, but i love my 2016 4runner trail with KDSS, plus it has more cubic space than the gx. still, both vehicles are incredibly well built and there resale value is second to none, good video and keep up the great work.
The GX has KDSS too I have it in my 2020
Your 4Runner doesnt have a V8 though :(
The GX is a much better way to go with the V8 instead of the anemic V6...full time 4WD is another great feature that is missing in the 4Runner for the most part except for the overpriced higher trim level, should be available in all trim levels for what they charge for that 4Runner sticker....the Lexus has plenty of luxury features to make you feel luxurious, but not so much that you wouldn't want to drive it to the ski resort in comfort and power.
For the American market yes and by far better than the 4runner. Plus you forgot about the GX it has centre-diff
I have a 2021 GX and replaced my Duelers with permanent winter/traction tires. I have to say I’ve never felt more unsafe driving on slippery surfaces than when I had the Duelers on the rig.
Huh
Yup, Lexus should've kept these equipped with Michelin LTs, like the previous years... The duelers totally suck on anything but dry and light rain! The Michelin LTX are perfect for the GX, if one doesn't want something like the KO2s
@@M5_Sonu oh is that why my 2020 GX is the only one that came with Michelins still? And then every other GX I saw had duelers I thought someone messed with my car lol
@@M5_Sonu Agreed, I love the Michelins on my GX470
I love mine! It's horrible on gas (15.9 miles per gallon average). Can't wait for bad weather, lol!
I love the GX
me too!! ❤️
Why is the cargo space is smaller than Forester and Rav4? Because it has 3 rows?
My Chevy Express is all wheel drive with a g80 rear locker and a mechanical transfer case from borg warner
My 2022 GX460 when put in reverse it reduces the screen image smaller no matter how I tried to adjust. I think that’s how it is. Your video shows full screen in reverse on 2023 GX. Did they updated it? Thanks for the video.
You can add Mts to the other models yourself. Lots of videos on the tube.
Would you use regular gas if you own one and use it for commute? I think it is perfect for buying and keep it forever, don't like the must use of premium gas though. Also guess 4runner has more higher from the ground driving position and truck like feeling than the GX.
Awesome video! At the end when you were near the summit, the GX really struggled to get through very little snow, would be nice to not buy one with tires like that in Minnesota where we get alot of snow.
it appeared to be mud-snow, so there was slippage of the tires.
18:45 I prefer the current ‘22 - ‘23 GX because of the V8, the next gen. GX is more likely to have a 6 cyl + Turbo.
Some people aspire to own Ferraris and other supercars. This is my dream car.
it’s a proper SUV, unlike crossovers which are essentially SUV shaped minivans
Men gets sports cars but legends own big giants like these and take em places and go on amazing adventures!
@@justfelix30 Large SUVs kind of suck, doesn't help that current automobiles continue to grow in size. Big is fine if that's what you're after, however you can't deny smaller means more maneuverable and less lumbering.
LC Prado is not available in the US because it's not made with all the fancy tech nor meets the US security requirements for this type of car (and is mostly available in diesel versions).
How fast were you driving on that forest dirt road before you hit the snow for the off road test?
While the MTS and CC ( crawl control ) are nice to have ( and can be easily added to your GX ! ) the built in ATRAC and KDSS plus locking center diff are more than sufficient for most ORing tasks!
indeed!!
It is only possible on the GX up to 2019. No one has figured out how to add to the 2020+ model years yet.
"uptown cousin" I like that
Thank you for taking the time reviewing the GX 460. I have seen so many of these, and the manner in which you conduct the review is fantastic! I am torn between the 2023 GX460, or a used 2019/2020/2021 Land Cruiser or LX 570…or is it GX 570? I can’t keep up…the predominant reason for me to purchase one is best in class reliability.
Reliability wise the GX, LX and Land Cruiser are going to be pretty much the same. Just depends on the interior space. The LX570 and Land Cruiser have a little bit more interior room. The Lx600 doesn’t. It’s smaller on the inside than the GX due to the second town being fixed and not being able to slide it back. I faced the same decision. A new GX or a LX with 20k for the same price. Ended up buying a new 22 GX because of the better gas mileage(about 2-4 mpg more than the other 2). You still get a V8, full time 4wd as well as the reliability. The GX is an amazing value.
Great review of a great vehicle. I sure hope Toyota does not ruin things with the new 4 Runner / GX platforms. Disappointing that the Off Road Package is only available with the most expensive top trim model.
For 2023 the blackline comes with the off road cameras
You can add mts and cc pretty easily I believe. Modules available
Is there any good wheeling in Spokane ?
Which forest road is this? I'd love top check it out as a WA local
Nice truck!!! However will not let go of my '15 4runner Trail just yet...
We only get the Toyota Prado version with just 2.8 turbo diesel. No petrol any more:( in Australia
Heloo
I have a question all Blackline has a new system off road
ICE will always be KING!
I love this vehicle, but is small for my need. i have 4 kids all with car seats the oldest 6 years old, and 2 twin strollers plus bags and miscellaneous i have to keep my 2016 Suburban which has been reliable till now with 97k mileages.
I live in WA. Does anyone know what this trail is?
God I love this truck.
So the upscale LEXUS is 62 grand whilst the Toyota Sequoia is 80 grand plus ??
@drivingsports, can you review Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV?
is LC Prado same as regular LC?
My father has a 2013 gx 460 really i bet that most powerfull and strong suvs are The Lexus lx and gx series also gx470 also too god for his productionyears 470 k kilmoters we drive since 2013 but fuel consumtion is too much i thing avg 19-20 litres per 100 km
You're conflating locking the center diff with engaging the front axle in your explanation of part-time 4wd as seen on the 4runner.
Where is that hill located?
Just got an fj. It's good for most things but not great for family-friendlyness. Now highly debating taking the loss on a trade in for a 11-13 GX 460
Just ordered a new 2023 GX Black Line today from a local dealer. Got a bit tired of all these redesign talk and wanted something proven and capable. The 62K price tag is at least 10K cheaper than a Sequoia Limited Off-road and that’s more than enough to cover all the extra gas cost for the next 20 years
I would pick this over the new GX that’s coming out, especially with the V8.
Yep- that's what I did. The new 2024 GX 550 will eventually be a great vehicle, it will have small things to get worked out, just like vevery other new line introduction vehicle. I did not want to wait several years for these quirks to get ironed out, so I bought the last year 2023 V8 and I am so happy with it. Also, the wait for the new GX 550 is insane, at least six months and the pre-order listing is over a year of deposits.
Does it have remote start?
That's the vehicle I want. But they have to upgrade the inside for the price I need a more luxury interior. Just keep the same body. So I'm waiting to see the new GX
Which road goes to that fantastic view ? 27:50
EXCELLENT!! 🇯🇲🇯🇲😊😊❤️❤️
It looked like the camera man was running beside the cars during that drag race😂
Does this car have bad body roll ? Like the LX
Ryan, do you still have your compass trailhawk? How is that holding up?
Sold it! Looking forward to testing the new 2023 with the turbo engine soon!
The only downside to the hydraulic suspension is the cost of repair when you have issues out of warranty. People generally buy Lexus to keep long-term, so this is something to consider if someone wants to buy used or buy new to keep long term.
It's just a hydraulic sway bar nothing serious.
my '98 4runner has a hydraulic clutch. no clutch cables to replace. never had to do a thing to it other than replacing fluid. hydraulic systems are fantastic
I have an '05 LX470 and have never had a problem with the AHC system. My '06 GX has air suspension not hydraulic
which forest roadis this?
I've had mine for a year, 2022 version. It does not have the surround camera, has the dark interior which I like better. I'm happy with it. The ride is smooth. I did invest in true snow tires for this winter, hopefully it will pay off. The main reason I picked this was V8 engine, Lexus quality and reliability and at least for 2022 it had the apple car play. If the LX 570 had had the apple car play, the V8, which it did, and NOT those stupid jump seats in the back third row I probably would have bought that one. If my Escalade had been better made I would have kept it. I hate to accept it but this Lexus GX 460 rides better, is better made and has overall much better quality than the 2018 cadillac Escalade I had.
Better late than never.
If I could choose only one car for the rest of my life it would be this one
Looking for opinions on whether to go 2023 TRD Pro 4Runner at msrp or a 2022 or 2023 GX as a family car that will be our road trip warrior and see off road action maybe 20 times per year. Pros for 4Runner to me is mostly the cost, color and that it comes fully optioned pretty much due to being the top trim. Pros of the GX are the mostly the V8 sound and ride comfort. If I could get the off road package on a lower trim GX I think that would be the sweet spot but the fact that it needs to be on the luruxy trim, making it 15+ thousand more than the TRD Pro gives me pause. Thanks!
The new grand Cherokee sweet too
If I was in the market my top two choices would be the 4Runner TRD Off Road or GX. I don't think the price premium for the TRD Pro is justified. Speaking of premium, the Premium fuel requirement on the GX is a substantial ongoing expense. I will never understand how the Tundra and Sequoia offered a 310 hp 4.6 V8 that ran on Regular but the 301 hp 4.6 in the GX requires Premium.
So how easy it to swap out the KDSS shocks / system with just normal conventional high performance shocks? My only concern with this vehicle, otherwise it looks perfect. V8, Made in Japan, Full Time 4WD. Checks all of my boxes.
KDSS is not shocks, it's a sway bar disconnect using a hydraulic end link
2rd row looks exactly like my 2012 GX :D
And until just last year, the dash and steering wheel was the exact same as your 2012 too. Nothing changed! It was a good formula to begin with. I personally prefer the front end look of the older ones. The grille on the newer ones just doesn’t match the rest of the look imo.
I wish I could afford a new one. Beautiful truck for sure
I bought a lotto max ticket today 😅 please please!!!!
