Bud, I can tell you from the grain orientation on that wood that it's gonna be loosening again soon. I'd suggest forging a couple small wedges for yourself in preparation. Don't worry about splitting too much. As long as the front and back edges of the eye (especially) have a lot of friction acting on them you'll be fine. The grain doesn't look like it has much runout, so although it will want to loosen as long as you stay on top of that you should have the handle for a long time.
ok, thanks, the orientation is diagonal and not what I would typically like but I figured why not give it a try. I've been letting the boiled linseed oil really soak into the end grain and I like your idea of some smaller additional wedges.
That hammer is very nice. The handle is too. Oak works pretty well for hammer handles is what I’ve found after handling probably 20 . It’s all I have sometimes and I’ve only broken 1
Nice. I will look forward to some of your Smithing work.
thanks Jim!
Amazing
Hey mr. Bollendorf hope you got my email and hope you keep killing these youtube videos
Beautiful
Thank you my friend!
Nice collab
Thanks Gib!!
Loved the video Kyle! that handle looks great! I cant wait to see more blacksmithing videos from you in the future
Thanks Paul! I'm very inspired to do more blacksmithing now! I spent Saturday welding up plate steel on the bottom and sides of the forge and it seemed to help retain more heat. So do you think my regulator could be improved? Instagram is not showing your entire message here at work.
You might want to get a regulator with a gauge on it so you can see the pressure you are putting out. The one you had looked similar to the ones gas grills use and it might not allow enough gas to pass through it. It seems like you have a big enough burner so I’m thinking it’s the regulator.
The regulator I have is one that is up to 30 psi I think and it seems to put out enough but a gauge would be better for sure. I did try to be more patient, letting the forge heat up and then let the material in longer and it definitely helped as you could see with the tongs I'm working on at the end.
30psi is definitely more than enough and it seems like it got hot enough to forge those tongs
Fantastic video! I really like the handle that you made. I sure am glad you enjoy your hammer! Many blessings to you and your Channel.
Thanks, Tracy! Yes, I'm thrilled with the whole collaboration! Knowing there are good people out there like Paul is really encouraging! Thanks and God bless you and your family as well!
Beautiful work on the handle, for that awesome looking hammer. I'm going to watch that video next. But was wondering did you only use that scraper spokeshave to shape the handle once you got to your horse?
Tim. Wilson thanks! Yes only used the spokeshave and then some orbital sanding to finish it off. The spokeshave is far superior to rasps or files IMO and faster
dont know if your done with this channel but if not cant wait to see more
Thanks, not done...had to take a break but just upgraded my mini forge and I'll be putting out more videos soon showing some of the things I've been working on
