  • I'd been looking to build a small metalworking table but we realized that an old custom steel chimney cap could be re-purposed to suit the bill. In this video, I'm welding extension legs on and going over my welding setup. Thanks for watching!

Those are some good looking welds! I can't wait to see what metal projects you cook up.

Thanks, Caleb! I used to do some stick welding in my 20's but I'm fairly new to MIG so this has been fun.

I’m thinking, with a table that’s somewhat small like yours, you might be moving it around the garage. So rather than trying to get the leg length just so, weld some large nuts to the ends. Then install bolts upside-down (the heads will rest on the floor); now you’ll have 4 adjustable points, just like a refrigerator or stove. I did that when I built a wood platform for my wife’s washer/dryer combo. The garage floor has an extreme pitch (tree roots from a neighbor’s old tree). You have an interesting channel. Keep up the good work. Dan

Great idea, Dan. I've done that before with wooden benches and that would solve the issue of the uneven concrete floor. Thanks man!

Nice video. I was wondering if the legs would end up straight. I was thinking you would have clamped the final leg while the table was upright to get the best length. I would like to start welding in the future. Thanks!

thanks, yeah good idea, Tony. I measured accurately from the ends of the existing legs but I forgot to confirm they were all the same length to start! One of them was an 1/8" longer than the others. The other kicker is that the concrete floor is never quite level so adding adjustable feet is usually the best. yeah, welding is fun...like hot gluing for metal

Kyle, do you prefer the bandsaw over a chopsaw with a large cutoff wheel? My brother-in-law used to have a plasma cutter, and I had a buddy who was tops with a oxy-acetylene torch. In fact, his cuts looked like they were done with a blade.

I haven't used one of those metal cutting chop saws yet but they look nice. The plasma cutters look awesome and oxy-acetylene would be nice but this saw is all I have for now. We'll see how big into it I get....might have to get the plasma cutter!
