  • Zac Childs asked me to build him a new custom 1x12 Cabinet for the 1964 Vox AC10 he had recently acquired from Dan Strain of Danocaster Guitars. The amp's previous cabinet was in poor aesthetic condition and was made from heavy 3/4" MDF. Check out Zac's video were he delves into the history of these Vox amps and plays through the finished cabinet:

    I was with Zac when he got this back. He was so excited. He put in the tubes, then slid in the chassis, and one of the Truetone guys adjusted the length of the wire to the speaker or something. Then he turned it on and started playing. We’ve been friends for nearly 30 years and I could tell he was giddy. He said it was even better than he had hoped. Your work is absolutely amazing and shows so much craftsmanship. Great job!

      You sir, are a steely-eyed missile man bar none!
      I've worked with some old timers doing fine finish work on houses I've seen jigs they've built to re-create some wild, long-gone, arcane trim, casings and moldings but I believe they would be floored by the table saw jig you fabricated!
      I'd say your workmanship and attention to detail is easily on a par with Northcoast Music's excellent cabs (now mostly, sadly a thing of the past...)
      I have Mojotone and Mather cabs but the fit and finish you put into this awe-inspiring, JMI-era recreation is DAZZLING.
      Also IMO the more "horizontal" change you made to the original 60s Vox cab dimensions was an excellent idea too.

    I built a Deluxe Reverb as a 2 x 10" (with mismatched speakers - one ceramic, one alnico) and come to believe this is how God intended small amps to sound - MUCH better than the 1 x 12". If I were fortunate enough to acquire a vintage AC10 in need of a new cabinet - you can be sure I would have it be a 2 x 10". That being said, I want to add my praise and admiration of the construction of this amazing cabinet!

    • @VintageWoodWorkshop
      @VintageWoodWorkshop  Před 3 lety

      That’s a cool idea for your cab, like a vibrolux. Do you just make a new baffle board? Can 2 10s fit in a stock DR cab?

    • @godfreydaniel6278
      @godfreydaniel6278 Před 3 lety

      @@VintageWoodWorkshop - Yes - made a new baffle board of baltic birch ply to fit a ply (not MDF) DR cab I bought on eBay and beefed up the mount. Worked like a charm. I love the sound so much I use the cab as a external cab for other amps from time to time - I've got a Frenzel AC15 clone (with the EF86 preamp circuit - those guys do GREAT work), a vintage blackface Princeton Reverb, and recently bought a Laney Ironheart IRT to play with a multi-channel amp with all the bells and whistles - and all are divine through the magic speaker box. The speakers are one Eminence Legend ceramic, and one Eminence Legend alnico. There may be cabs that sound as good, in my opinion, but none better. I'm a retired remodel contractor, and so I know quality work when I see it - and let me say again how much I admire your creation (clearly not a reproduction) of the AC10 cab. All due kudos...

      Be careful and go lightly, there is a clear coat on top of the silver face panel that you want to keep intact. Do you have any of those worm trail-ish corrosion spots on your panel? Those form when moisture gets under the clear coat, just like on Aluminum wheels so keeping the clear coat is important
