New Life for a 1968 Fender Deluxe Reverb- Building a Finger Jointed Cabinet

- This is an amazing amp with an interesting history but it needed a major cabinet upgrade. The cabinet turned out to be homemade and was in poor condition with the butt joints becoming loose. It was also not the correct dimensions as the original cabinet. The face plate was also in poor condition and needed to be replaced (link below if you need one). Luckily the original baffle board and grill cloth were in great condition and could be reused. In this video I build a new cabinet from scratch to the exact specs of the original. I'm playing my 1994 54' Anniversary Strat with no effects.

The pink paint gives me an idea.. If heaven forbid it's ever stolen, only you will know about it. That could come in handy.
The '68 Fenders were like the '69 Camaro, they're unique to that year. Love the drip edge. I have the Bassman. Oh and I have a '67 DR as well. Nice work!
That sound! That's the one! Looks as good as it sounds too now.
Thanks Jim! Yes, the sound I always lusted after is there in that circuit and transformers. My 68' Super Reverb has it too...
Love the respect you had for sonny and his work
It is great that you pay tribute to the original owner, pure class!
Thank you, I'd like to think Sonny is looking down with a smile!
Nice work. Looks great.
Thanks!
At 1:28, I was like, "he turned the amp cabinet into a planer!" I think I need another cup of coffee...
Awesome! Like breathing life back into it!
Thanks Mark! yes, it really felt like the amp opened up with the new cab!
Happy to see you use that Delta bandsaw you restored.
Yes, thanks John! That Delta is a beast with a 3/4" blade and the 1.5 HP motor never bogs down.
Very nice! You play beautifully!
Thank you 👍
Beautiful job man.
Mighty fine Sir!
It was such an informative video, I was researching on DIY Cabinet, cuz I'm buying the Mojotone Brownface Vibroverb 40w amp to do Cesar Dias mods to it, love SRV, and found this lick in the demo! it was awesome, nice tone and great playing my friend! kudos on ur skills!
Brother that was such a cool project. Wonderful job!
I've built a few of these (although I think Baltic Birch plywwod is a much better medium), so take it from me...if you ever find that you need to build another such cabinet, just built the box, then, after all your glue is set, angle your table saw blade to 25 degrees and make that front angle for the slanted chassis. Just a tip...great job, nice presentation, everything made sense.
I'm about to build one of these cabs and was thinking about doing that angle like you did. My blade tilts to the right so the fence must be on the left side of the blade - a place I've never been before! It seems unnatural. I might give it a try although his method seems safer and less prone to error. Messing up would only require that one board be remade. I know me. I'll mess up and have to build the whole thing over again!
Amazing work and a very inspiring story. Enjoy that Deluxe in good health!
Thank you J P! It has amazing tone and just inspires you to want to pick up a guitar. I’ve been able to use it sitting in with a local band at their rehearsal space and it just has THE vintage sound. It has brought great smiles in the room!
Based on this video, Zac Childs, former guitar tech for Brad Paisley, asked me to build him a custom cab for this 1964 Vox AC10. That video will be coming out In the next couple of weeks. I’ve been posting pics of the build on Instagram.
I fully agree, the Deluxe is IT! Good on you for connecting with Zac.....his channel is fantastic.
What a fantastic amp!!!
Thank you, Scott! It has unbelievably great tone at band level too, my friends can’t believe it. It has THAT sound especially with a Celestion v30
It's a great job!
Thank you!
Nice work! Those 68's were built like the blackface amps still. On your 74 your wiring could be the crappy new wire the leaked blue ooze all over the place! Replace with good wire or the cloth wire available still. Then shotgun the brown turds and replace with the orange drops, mallory 150's ir , saved the best choice for last, solens caps. The solens are considered to be fantastic and half the price of the cheapest sozo's!! The middle 70's amps sounded weird to me! Take it back to blackface. It won't hurt but maybe help the value of the amp. 70 or 80 bucks and you got yourselve a great amp!!
Sweet and warm. You did a fine job on one of the all time great amps ever made. It'd be nice to hear it with a little heat on it.
Thanks, Ok, I’ll do that soon!
Excellent work. Can you give me the link to get a front panel. Nice Playing. Thanks
Wow this is really cool you still sound really good since last year when you would play during lunch.Hope your family is doing well😀
Thanks! We're doing well, hope you are too!
Nice Lenny tone!
Very nice👍👍🤠🤠🎸🎸

Very cool - Zac is awesome!
The first time i hear my Bose Quiet Comfort 35 distort. Or was it the amp....?!
Nice story man. Thx!
The stories that amp could tell! Nice job! I wonder if the purple was put these for Sonny to identify if in case it was stolen? Any concern about any caps leaking from a 52 year amp? Assuming those caps are original?
Kevin Shea thanks Kevin! Hey, maybe you’re right about the paint. A full electrolytic cap job and three prong conversion had just been done by the previous owner. I happened to luck into a 68’ Super Reverb that I bought without knowing what was inside circuit wise and I’ll be posting a video about that one on my other channel Vintage Guitar Workshop. In that one I did my own cap job and that sounds remarkably like this amp, just a little bigger and more lush.

Awesome! I stumbled on two old Amps at a church sale this year. A ‘63 Alamo Galaxy and A ‘66 Ampeg Rocket 2. Paid $20 each! The Alamo is stock, all original and I never powered it on! I wanted to send it out and get it taken care of. I could solder in new caps myself, but any issues trouble shooting, etc, I know amp techs don’t like to work on amps that have been worked on previously! I recapped my ‘79 Pro Reverb and that went fine.
Getting both these amps, I wasn’t going to power it up and possibly do more damage to the tubes due to leaking caps for example., so never turned them on!
The Ampeg was shipped for a recap several months ago and still waiting for that one to come back. I actually bought them to flip, but they are pretty cool that I decided to keep them.
Nice find on the Super Reverb! I know that amp is sought after! Another Modern amp I found in the Trash smelled moldy. I looked it up and cabinet furniture people spray a mix of water an vinegar in the cabinet to kill the mold. I used that and it worked. That amp just needed a new 1/4” input jack soldered in. The weirdest thing was the common jacks I ordered had the contacts on the opposite side to fit in the circuit board. The input did not work and had to swap that jack with the existing 1/4” speaker out jack and all worked fine afterwards. Looks like the jack was specific to this found Ibanez amp where when closed (plug out) would allow the the prongs to the circuit to continue! But not if the prongs was on the opposite side! I had to look at the broken jack and realized the prongs were backwards! Never saw that before! Keep the videos coming!
Kevin Shea that’s awesome, wow what a steal! I actually just sold a 65 ampeg rocket 2 for $475!
Very nice build. A few questions ... what angle are you cutting to match the slope of the chassis? My Musicmaster Bass amp cabs are slightly deeper at the base - 9-1/4" than right below the angle break - 8-1/2", is that the case with this cabinet? Finally, can you post a link to where you purchased the repro silverface faceplate from eBay? I love the silverface aesthetic and the color of the print. Cheers, Peter
Thanks, Peter! I'll check on the angle and measurements and get back to you but I did find the seller for the faceplate on ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/Deluxe-Reverb-Silver-Front-Face-plate-SF-New/124556546664?hash=item1d00261268:g:FpoAAOSw3i9fCcNb
Yes, the sides taper from about 9-1/8” to 8-1/2” at the top. The obtuse angle of the face measured off the top is 114 degrees. Hope that helps
@@VintageWoodWorkshop That's a huge help - thanks! I wish a) the silverface replacement plates weren't so expensive ... b) that someone made custom silverface faceplates. Best, Peter
@@petersmith6098 I know, expensive and seemingly the only ones available anywhere on the planet. The one I bought is an EXACT copy though so in my case, worth it to match the brand new cab and pristine grill cloth.
You could have had the volume going up to Eleven!
Where did you get that beautiful new fender face plate?
I found it on eBay...not sure who made it but it’s a near perfect reproduction
Hello Kyle, whatever came of the axe heads I sent you, ages ago ( as It seems )
Greeting from the sunny climes of Basel, Switzerland.
Hello, Andre! No I didn't forget about you or those axe heads! I've been waiting to get ahold of some hickory to carve some handles. I hope you're doing well my friend!
