Chess has been having a resurgence in popularity this year so I have finally acquiesced to semi-popular demand and started to play a bit. First, let's hone our skills and get a little more warmed up and then let's conquer chess dot com one board gamer at a time.

That's true, he's likely better at chess than most of his subscribers, but that's not the reason he gets no backseating. People who are better than him understand that explaining why a move is "good" or "not-as-good" can be really difficult. The only way to really do it is with the intended person actively paying attention to the boardstate you're referencing, which is why Gotham could do it. Imagine if Gotham went anonymous and started backseating NL in the comments, it would just not work at all and NL wouldn't even register the comment. Most people better at chess than NL are intelligent enough to realize that. Most of them also know that x move is better than y because "it just is" and don't want to bother explaining it.

Small hint for 22:46 - generally you don't want to put your pawns on the same color as your bishop because it blocks your bishop and makes it a good target for the opponents bishop.
With e4 you let your opponent to close the center which makes your bishop bad and his pawn on c6 is bad anyway.
After d4 in these structures you have to be careful to not let the opponent's knight to c3 or f4 as the too much pawns on white squares led to these weak black spots.

that face when the computer dislikes one of your moves so much that it says the best move on the next turn is just undoing it even though nothing happened in that part of the board since :/ feelsbadman

Gotham and Nakamura just now questioning why Ryab is the face for this gambit. Little did they know (and little did NL know as well).

In game 2, the game liked you moving the pawn up to f2 because it provides a potential opportunity to trap their queen by baiting your check.

Can someone explain why the end of game number of blunders and mistakes often is different from the number it shows in the analysis?

38:45 My theory is that engines like giving checks because it severely limits the possible responses that are actual legal moves from that point on.
In any given position you can play dozens of different moves, and the computer has to look at each and every one to find out which ones are the bone head ones. The moment you check, it's suddenly only a few moves, sometimes even only a single one.

Northernlion, just look at the moves outlined underneath "best move". It shows what the engine thinks is best. Also , if you click it you get the full variant in the variants overview. You can also toggle "show lines" at the top of the overview to see the lines analysis thinks are best.

Make the match even longer. If you have more time, you comment each of you move more. Then the move is better and there is even more entertainment value.

When you were analyzing and you wanted to see what would’ve been their next move, you needed to check the "show lines" box.
