Not in this video. Both trades improved NL's position. In the second game it was completely obvious that trading queens just wins the game right there. As Levy said, the best move is always the best move and here it was to trade. And people wonder why NL has a tendency to switch from always doing something to never doing it.

Point stands since he's "tradaholic". Having alcohol is not bad, having too much alcohol all the time is the real problem...
@@ruffusgoodman4137 That's their point though. That trading too much is bad BUT even good trades get comments poking fun at doing it, as shown here, without analyzing whether they're good or bad trades, which is why NL would flip to the other side entirely.

I love NL and think he's very underrated at video games as well, I always fall into the meme of thinking he's bad at games when I'm watching (slay the spire, monster train, this to a lesser extent) and then buy the game myself and realise not only is he incredibly good at these games, he's always entertaining at the same time. Like the amount of times he blunders in games is only due to the amount of content he puts out, I can't get past 1000 in chess and I can't get past ascension 5 in slay the spire, admittedly I don't play either with any kind of regularity but the egg is a very talented video game player for sure

Ryan seeing your competitive side is really interesting to watch. Seeing you learn from Levi was incredible, and when you put the mid game strats into effect that was really something. This chess series is incredibly pogged. It's a must watch from me every day.

@@robinvik1 not at all, its just oversaturated so its a lot easier to start at 1200 and drop to your real elo, be it 800 or anything else.

For 2.5 minute the Egg thinks of trading rooks from the knight threat, I'm loosing my mind, then "ohh I just take his knight with my knight", I'm laughing that the disaster is avoided.

Watching NL play chess, I don't understand why it's become one of my favorite series, but it is.

I know this series will likely be ending or at least slowed down when Repentance comes out, but I seriously would watch this every day for an indefinite amount of time. This is one of those things like Geoguesser, bringing great commentary and in-depth thought. Loving it.
That second draw could have been a win because the opponent had almost no time left. Basically, even if they got a queen they wouldn't have had time to get you in checkmate.
15 seconds is a lot of time unless they don't know how to checkmate with a queen and king.

15 seconds isn't what he would have had. NL could have been a major nuisance in the bottom right. By the time he would have gotten a queen, he might have had under 5 seconds.

For whatever reason, I really enjoyed this one the most so far! Loving the thought process put into each move. I can tell you improved since starting the series/lessons with GothamChess!
That first game was super goofy and super fun.
Some really good analysis and anticipation by NL and some small oversights that almost lost him the game.

So refreshing to se him actually good at a game. He routinely makes plays I cant even see.
At 38:54 I genuinely had to skip up to make sure he took with his knight. My heart couldn't handle the suspense...

I'm a little blown away by that second game. The opponent not only literally HAD mate, but also he had a very good opportunity to get the coolest mating pattern of all time with the.. I don't know if there's a term for it but where you check with the bishop, king moves one square over, rook discovered attack, king moves back, rook sacrifice into queen check into queen mate. Basically the thing you saw with the rook discovered attack except his queen was lined up behind his bishop so he missed that opportunity to deliver the mate there. BUT THE SECOND ONE LIKE WHAAAAA.. CASTLES?! HE HAS MATE AND HE'S JUST LIKE, "Let me get to safety real fast before I end this man's career."

It made me winge a bit when he motions to take with the B1 rook twice at 15:00. He has the bishop but it isnt as strong of a position on either the A8 rook or the king as he thinks. Now let's see how it plays out...

Hey NL, when you are in the analysis and you are playing out another line, and you choose the move that is not best, the best move is shown on screen with a green arrow! Could save some time searching for it or reading it from the analysis text.

Yo Nl that first knight move you found where you put yourself in attacking range of the pawn was genius I was staring at the board after pausing the video and couldn’t find a good play it was a tough position . Rook trade was bad but extremely expertly plated up until that
