- I'm playing on Chess.com -- these aren't sponsored videos but the site seems pretty cool.
Chess has been having a resurgence in popularity this year so I have finally acquiesced to semi-popular demand and started to play a bit. First, let's hone our skills and get a little more warmed up and then let's conquer chess dot com one board gamer at a time.

About this game:
the horse moves like an L - Hry
chess series is actually wildly entertaining
Honestly as good as Isaac if not better
@@spynae Isaac is like a podcast with an overlay, talking about the game itself is incidental. With this series he's always talking about the game itself, always speaking out loud about strategy and what he thinks about what's going on. It's a very different experience, at least for me.
But I like 'em both.
Couldnt agree more!!
YES IT IS EnTeRtAiNiNg
LETS GO
I love that NL is shining a spotlight on smaller indie games like Chess. Even though he's a huge channel he's not afraid to play lesser known games!
Idk i feel like chess is just yet another recent fad, no way Chess is still being played in two years.
I for one am just glad Chess hasn't moved to a microtransaction model
I like how Chess goes back to the basics, focusing on mechanics. It sure is a game of the year contender for me and I can't help but wonder what the developers will come up with next!
Lol it's indie because it's from India
I feel like Chess is a little barebones mechanic wise, but I can't wait to see what other developers do with it as a foundation.
the best part of this series is when he reads out the utterly incomprehensible chess opening descriptions
I actually love that NL analyzes his games after he plays them. He's getting so much better (I'm pretty sure he's just wiping off the rust tbh) and it's really fun to see him find mistakes in his gameplay and improve as a result. I guess what I'm trying to say is *pog* .
How I wish everyone concedes as gracefully as the pogman himself
Right? So many people just disconnect or spam draw offers when they're losing
@@Jack-dk7uu I once sent a draw offer when I was losing as a joke, and the guy started all caps cursing at me.... I've also had people get mad when I play out a position till the very end when i'm blatantly losing. Even to the point of trying to force stalemate.
@@jesseengland5967 chaotic evil, but i applaud you for your chaos
@@jesseengland5967 Hey if you can still trick them into a stalemate, you didn't lose brother
@@jesseengland5967 it's very good to play till the end, sometimes being a whole queen up will still results in draws. Its good practice for understanding what is winning and what is not. In one game I blundered a rook for bishop but the resulting endgame was drawn, if I didn't resign I would have had a chance.
I also second the gentle pushing that people wnat more analysis. Not only does it give a better chance of you improving over time (which makes the series as a whole have more direction and feel more satisfying) but it's also the most unique content Chess can give proportional to your other stuff. An opportunity to be objectively retrospective about your own decisions is super interesting, and often entertaining.
I agree, if he doesn't want to I get it. But my absolute favorite part of the video is the analysis, because I feel invested in the game and love knowing what the optimal moves where and where/if mistakes were made.
The pog injection could not have come sooner. Watching the analysis releases so much dopamine at once that I hallucinate pogs on the walls. Never stop with the chess content egg
+1 respect I agree chess increases dopamine levels
Pog
The blunder at the end was so relatable. Shame we didn’t get to see the analysis for the last game. I think you were winning when you pinned the knight at 13:34.
he was indeed winning but missed pawn f5 winning the horsey
But that guy's response allowing his pawn to block was pretty sick too
Ya, take the pawn or protect with knight to F6 and he's -11, meaning he's considered 11 pawns up. He survives this attack and doesn't run into time trouble, and he wins easily.
Just gonna say, the move-by-move analysis afterward, with commentary, is HUGELY GREAT. I'm glad NL brought it back for this vid! The enthusiasm when he sees that he made the best move, or when a move he thought was spicy turned out to be the best, it's infectious!!
Will definitely be watching all of this series!!
the absurd names of the strategies on the side are hilarious every time
The Nimzowitch-Larsen Attack... heh, I see you have much to learn NL. Once you learn about the Lichtenstein-Wallowitz Quantum Stratagem, your game will never be the same. If you think of chess as being in relativistic curved spacetime instead of a flat 8x8 board, it all starts to make sense.
For the last time, he's not going back to 5D chess with multiverse time travel.
Heh. Nimzowitch-Larsen. NL.
@@432pro Isn’t that veird?
Be careful, though. I just got kicked out of a tournament for utilizing LWQS, no matter how many times I tried to explain them that Qg8 through the e2->f7 wormhole is a perfectly legitimate move.
NO! NOT THE BANACH-TARSKI GAMBIT!
Just sat down in front of my PC after the whole day and I see Splonky, Slasher´s Keep and Chess.. NO IDEA WHAT TO WATCH FIRST.. BUT POGGED TO THE BRIM OF MY GOURD.
to the very brim
Clearly the answer is Geoguessr.
Love that first line in the description. "I just think it's neat!"
Also in the description:
"the horse moves like an L"
What are you doing here
I have been watching you since 2014, first time commenting. Ryan+Chess is the omelette of egg dishes. 93.1% accuracy in-game, 100% accuracy in my heart.
Just typing this to say this is the most interesting series youve ever done
NL might be even more intelligent than we thought. He makes fast moves to create compromised board states to make more interesting videos instead of just playing a solid game like we all know he can. He's the bald Magnus Carlsen of content creators.
"The game is just so complex, they've never seen it before."
I love how proud NL is after the diego games. Another great series from egg daddy.
Ryan “Gary” “northern” “ Magnus Carlsen” “lion” Leternou
"I'm so smart, accidentally!"
-Northernlion, 2020
Please put this on a t-shirt for your next round of merch.
*checkmates himself*
The contemplative beard stroking is yet another step towards NL's final form as a grandmaster
I have not been this excited for a series since teddy 99
How does this man maintain consistently über-pogged commentary while playing ranked online chess - I swear that off-the-cuff Nimzowitsch opening line had me pealing
The Nimzowitch Larsen attack traditionally has very poor commentary, it's true
Honestly I would kill for a chess ep at this point. Never stop the poggening
NL and chess is a perfect match because IMO his play-by-play style of commentary is his greatest asset as a gaming youtuber, and chess is such a simple (therefore perfect) game for that skill to shine. Pog, gourd, etc
I never thought I needed this, but the software/analysis are so good and the banter is so top-notch that I gotta watch!
Great series honestly. I'm liking and commenting to incrementally increase the chance you're running this forever.
I am loving this chess series of videos, it is a great joy watching you play something that was dear to you when you were young and also your thought process during and after de game. You are best! Lots of hugs!
such an extremely pogged series, the gourd is very well filled
love watching the step by step analysis
Holy crap, NL just bodied Diego twice, no pressure on him at all
the match and after match breakdown are equally fun. This also caused me to relearn chess and play for fun to understand your plays better! Learning a lot NL, really enjoying this series
Thanks for this! Just a few episodes of watching you think through the board state has really helped me peer into Chess in a way I haven't been able to previously.
I would like to say that this chess series is absolutely pogged and I hope you do more for a while. I also love the post-game analysis because, not only is it quite interesting to watch, but it also mitigates backseating.
These chess videos are great! And analysis adds a lot of value to them! Please keep them going!
I wish he went through the analysis on each match, even when there was an obvious mistake. It's really interesting
Fuckin love him farrowing his brow every time he's like "we go here, we do this, he does this, boom", and they always do something he wasn't expecting
Never been interested in chess
Getting pogged out of my mind watching this
This series is a major success in my eyes. Already looking forward to the next one
I can't stop laughing at the Murray impression at 10:27... this series is gold NL please continue it forever
You’ve re-envigorated my interest in chess and maybe one day I’ll feel brave enough to try my own hand at it!
Ngl, this is very entertaining. I’m really glad you’re making chess videos
NL best part of the vid is when you really try to analyze your mistakes. Great vid!
You gotta play this until an exceptional move is named after you dude
I really enjoy how northernlion explains his plays
This is some quality content NL please keep up the chess series!
2:43 I just love the pause when his opponent does something unexpected
the way he commentates the game while playing. And the way he explains his thoughts so clearly like a blueprint is what makes this so entertaining and why he has so many subscribers. It's a real talent lmao
Good games NL!!!! Keep it up man, super entertaining with the analysis afterward :)
Yo Captain Eggman, just wanna say this series is great. Really enjoying it.
Also the post game analysis is great to fun to watch too btw.
Finally, a game where the backseaters have to actually be smart
My new favorite series on the channel it even got me into chess
This genuinely has to be one of my favorite series
Loving the series!
loving this series.
I absolutely love this. I was dying and screming at the screen that last game, saw that checkmate coming a mile away. But I was so pogged about it all the same! I love NL playing chess, god damn!
Couldve been interesting if white played e5 at 11:54 to stop your bishop from having an escape square. It doesnt really win a piece cause you can still move your knight on e7 or do something weird like d4 but it's a cool move I think
Physical pain at the f6 move, man :-) Keep it up, enjoying this lots!
This series has quickly became a favourite for me, reminds me of play chess growing up!
Love getting the rundown analysis.
NL's Opponent: *Makes any move*
NL: Interesting..
About this game: The horse moves like an L
The tiny jokes in NL's descriptions always make me chuckle
I'm loving this! Please more!
I love the thumbnails and titles for this series. Just the contrast between the titles and thumbnails intensity and the fact that the game is chess
I have no idea how to play chess but I like this.... I have no idea what's happening literally 100% of the time
*An unexpected check*
NL: Honestly that's a good move.
This series is a blast.
Gotta love waking up to a new NL chess game. A good way to get ready for the day that isn't just mind melting.
Love this series!
5:00
You after a game of blunders: rematch? - Nah.
Opponent after a game of blunders: rematch? - You... .... ok!
:-D
NL. Dude, Please analyze your loses over your wins. PLEASE it'll be so pog of you
Eggman I don't care if you're just doing this to fill a video spot but PLEASE post more of these, I frickin love it.
I don't know why, but I love seeing people who play extremely fast get wrecked. Punishing the overconfidence is just hilarious.
Keep these videos coming brother, pogging out of my earthly vessel here.
Dood I’m living for the chess series never thought I’d be so pogged up for this
I'm pogged outta my freaking gourd for more nl chess
don't stress the blunders egg, video is heavily on the pog side
The main mistake your opponent did in the second and third game was to sac his fianchetto'd bishop pretty early. And opening the position when he's not developed yet.
Ryan falling into every chess player's habit of only analysing games you win lol
Oh man this is a great series. Real edge of our seat gaming right here. I was yelling aloud - come on take the pawn, take it! Great content - keep it up :D
(Ofc that would've been the wrong move as you would've lost your Rook- but it was fun nonetheless).
dude im lovin this series but when you lose it when the analysis agrees with your move my dopamine shoots into the stratosphere
Series is dope notable improvement over time pog
These chess videos are POG! I’ve waited a decade to watch this egg play chess!
I like playing my own chess games while I listen to the Egg's soothing voice narrating his self-destructive plays
When I saw the Nimzowitsch-Larsen, I got nervous. I legit play this opening. It very rarely goes well for me, but when it does, it can be pretty fun.
the POG will start to form cracks in my gourd if the madman keeps up the insane gamer moments
Love to see more Chess!
Dude I love this series.
That tactic at the end though. Covering escape squares with a pawn is fine dining. Wish I could see the engine evaluation up to that moment.
I love how you analize the game in the end xD So exciting xD
Favorite series on CZcams
"The game can't possibly be that complicated." -EGG
there was a fucking ad for the incredible egg before this video
absolute pog for eggman chess series!
Love this content thanks NL
Absolutely my favorite NL series already
6:40 and forward is NL putting on his sunglasses and being a badass.
Chess videos are MEGA POGGY!!! I recently learned chess and really love this content, my variety strimmer :')
Chess must be the most analyzed sport of all time. Whoever made the website must be proud of themselves.
This website actually uses Stockfish, a chess engine developed by other smart people
Actually started playing today. Thanks NL for the inspiration my guy.
Me too man. Getting wrecked left and right but it's still very entertaining :)
Love seeing Ryan use the Isaac's Gambit And go for optimal zane plays in the wonderful game of kings
Best series on youtube!
That down the rabbit hole video about Deep Blue came at the perfect time bc now i'm starting to understand the pog levels this man is reaching
