- I'm playing on Chess.com -- these aren't sponsored videos but the site seems pretty cool.
Chess has been having a resurgence in popularity this year so I have finally acquiesced to semi-popular demand and started to play a bit. First, let's hone our skills and get a little more warmed up and then let's conquer chess dot com one board gamer at a time.

About this game:
the horse moves like an L - Hry
Friendship over with Scandinavian Defense: Mieses-Kotrč variation, English Opening is Egg's new best friend
I'm expecting Magnus Carlsen to soon cite NL as the reason he got into chess and offer himself for a collab.
but i guess we'll only find out 8 years in the future
Keen for the Gotham chess collab!
that is too far fetheced. i do expect magnus to be recorded saying "oh... you wanna get weird" when his opponent plays a daring move
You probably dont care but does anyone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..?
I somehow forgot my password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me!
@Zaiden Mayson instablaster ;)
After YEARS of nl being hard on the fence about a chess series, it’s good to see it pogging out of control
At 10:00, if you castle, he can go pawn C3 and take either your bishop or knight. That's why it's bad.
bxa6 seems a fine reply?
@@EpicTubah Fair enough. The analysis does think f Rook b8 would be the next move so I guess black could attack 2 pawns at once with the 2 rooks.
@@V.n.D I think that's why it's only - 1.4, black threatens the knight and bishop, but doesn't actually win a piece. After the trade, presumably black has some positional advantages
It's the rook on the semi-open file to b8, you're going to be dropping a pawn if played correctly and will have a rook in your back rank that will be hard to defend. Moving the king up gives you the needed defender on time (castling is one move too late)
About the game
“The horse moves like an L”
Best chess guide ever
Possible encoded message: "The horse moves like NL"
???
Nice catch, haha.
I love this haiku
I'd like to add the obligatory; 'Isn't zat veird?'
Top tier title today. Only pogs ahead.
You could say the title was a bomb...
Quite opposite, in fact. Egg botched the title heavily. It should've been "Now c4 is my best friend".
Citation has to be verbatim.

"When you you made a blunder this early the best move is just... to go insane" - NL
I am not locked in here with you, YOU ARE LOCKED IN HERE WITH ME!
Edit: Turns out it was more of a Rorschach vs Dr. Manhattan-type of situation.
17:10 Whenever the lil' backseat gremlin in my brain hears "you're gonna laugh", you know you're in for it.
Haven't seen you in a while :( where'd you go my guy
I love how NL is always frantically looking for the new game button
20:50 Queen defends bishop on D3, which bishop takes does not, so bishop takes instead of queen takes blunders a bishop, hence the huge point swing.
"I'm actually about to be mated." - Ryab
kate disliked that
If only we all could be so lucky.
Letting Tomo inside in a 10 minute game chess has to be the Highest lv of BM out there.
I can't wait till the Vancouver defense becomes a standard move
Vancouver defense is risky because it involves a lot of misclicks, but it's still considered strong for the pog factor
I love how exciting the Lion-Father chess series is turning out.
NL's gotta play the way he wants to, but if it is all the same for him... I have a preference for the 10 minute matches.
Yeah, me too. In 5 minutes I always feel guilty when he explains his moves to us while losing time
Also, am I the only one that prefers the move-by-move analysis, and not the sped up analysis (where it takes you to key moments)?
I also agree, just commenting that in the case NL sees this. Of course, if NL wants to do 5 minute, it's not gonna ruin my day or anything, but I personally like the more thoughtful moves you can do in 10-minute.
@@protonpig Yup same here. It's a simple preference and very far from anything ruining the series.
If you want him to get better he needs to do both. It's how it works. I'd like to see him try 3 minute too.
I never knew how much I'd enjoy someone playing online chess.
After a day of torment, the AYEVERYBODY brings me right back to a pog spirit
It is going to be alright king!
Might not mean much coming from a random stranger you have never interacted with, but be strong. I am proud of you, you will get through this and be stronger at the end.
Alright guys. I’m 5-1 against my mom. She still won’t let me castle and blames me for not telling her that pawns can capture the king and the queen can go backwards diagonally???
Is that even chess anymore? Lol
Man make her read a rule book lol
Pull an en-passant on her next
So then where the hell did the 1 come from?
Doubble check this isnt some common regional variant of chess if shes from a outside the common chess countries she might have just learned a regional variant.
It's very clear how much of a positive impact starting a fresh recording session has had. If NL has done another huge session we'll see the tilt come back
A little tip for English - you want to control the d5, so an pawn to g3 and then bishop on g2 is recommended usually. Just watch out - you need to move you pawn before your opponent or block the diagonal with an knight or a pawn.
The mis-click King is getting me pogged up
23:44 "I think I've put way too much emphasis on making sure that I'm the fastest player."
Is literally never the faster player.
So, the juxtaposition of playing chess and going "I'm a bad dude" is weirdly comedic gold.
I know what I'm doing for the next thirty minutes
POGGING OUTTA MY MIND
NL plays the English Opening now? That's the most pog possible in chess :D
20:38 If they capture the knight, you can take the bishop so it's an even trade! If you were about to lose a whole piece the evaluation would likely be around -3, not +0.23 :)
8:55 Your opponent gets to respond with c3.
thanks for the answer, scrolled down to find this
Dang it, Ennel you have me playing chess again after all this time. Loving the series and Happy Birthday my dude!
i want this series to continue forever, i know it won't but i wish it were so
Ryan has referenced the "I dont wanna play with you anymore" line from toy story twice in these chess videos, I just thought that was neat
"I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice."
Thank you for this series, I look forward to it every day!
Never thought chess could be so fun. Really enjoy your analysis and how you go step by step in your plans...Even if some times things don't pan out ;)
I like the return to 10 minutes. Gives you time to banter and talk about what you're doing and thinking.
The analysis is so much fun NL. Your commentary is fantastic!
Love the chess series my dude! Made me start playing chess again
Absolutely love this series NL, you're by far the funniest chess player on CZcams.
Hey, NL, in the analysis, there are two kinds of blunders: 1-you missed a good move, 2-the move you make allows the opponant to play a great move.
Props on a fantastic series :)
I love these videos for the following reasons.
-The comedic value.
-The subconscious learning of chess strategy.
Praise Baldy
Awesome series. I hope it continues for a while!
Love this series, Ryan! Learning so much too. Thanks for all you do.
I loooove this series! keep it up!
Thanks NL for making these videos. It got me back into chess after many years from learning from my dad and playing with friends at school. Chess . com seems like a wonderful alternative to playing in person during this tricky time. The lessons and puzzles it offers are an eye opener as I was never really serious at chess. I am going to try to get my friends and family back into chess, Thanks!
Seriously one of the best series on the channel, I love watching these!
I had no intention of learning the basics of chess yet here i am following along fairly well. Thanks NL
The key moment analysis is great! Do more!
Love this series, and the analysis postgame gives me life.
Honestly this is the best series since Geoguesser. Much pogs. I don't know anything about chess other than what the pieces do, and your analysis makes it pretty easy to follow along and learn. Even tried to do a few games myself.
I love the Joker laughs as he watches his position crumble
I really appreciate this series very much, even if I wanted to back-sit, I would not be able to.
The english? Oh you mean the sicilian with colors reversed.
another example of blatant cultural appropriation by english colonists
this series is non-stop pog, thank you egg man
NL: [Self effacing comment] followed by [uproarious laughter]
Oh crap you figured out his formula
This series is incredibly good
key moments have taken the analysis from pog to POGGY
That last game was an absolute pog overflow, great games NL
This is actually a fantastic series
Im loving the chess vids. They are surprizingly fun! This is the first time i am watching nl to teach me how to play a game. And learn together. You got me playing chess again! Thanks egg daddy.
C4? Northernlion, today you've really lost it.
edit: gary you've done it again
No, he has won it. Totally the right choice.
Never knew about en passant. Crazy. Loving this series, learning some new things. Funny I've been playing Chess since I was 5 (casually) and am 33 now, and never even know there were different names to openings. Learning so much.
Im crowning chess the most pogged series youve done this year
I'm learning more about chess from watching this egg than I have at any other point in my life
I've never been much for playing chess myself, but I thoroughly enjoy watching you play and I feel like I'm actually learning stuff.
honestly, watching nl go off script crazy chess is just as fun as seeing him crush his opponent
29:32 NL looked like he got hit with a wave of nostalgia and it's so precious
Grand Master, I need your strongest opening!
YOU CAN'T HANDLE MY STRONGEST OPENING. My strongest openings would leave your center in shambles
@@FirstLast-gm9nu I'm riding into Battle Chess! Teach me that Hyper Advanced Dragon I heard so much about!
Casting at 9:50 made your bishop undefended, so if he pushed c4 he would have had some tactics.
"Played a pretty good game...six blunders" -Northern Lion, 2020
Your videos actually got me into playing chess again
Freaking love this content.
what an amazing episode!
20:26 important consideration here is that if they take the knight you take the bishop! so it doesn't actually lose material
yes, i enjoy the 10 min chess over the 5 min chess and love the analysis part. Good stuff
18:10 and that, my friends, is why you don't open up the king side pawns
14:38 you could move the forked knight to h4 and threaten to take the bishop
the last two places you want to hear "let's get weird" is in the operating room and across the board of a 10 minute aside chess match.
Happy Birthday, ChessEgg!
Most pogged series I have ever seen
This is good content. Please continue.
NL played that last game really strongly. That was fun to watch. The King was such a weird but good play.
I called that he should have captured the pawn with his Queen too so I'm feeling that cranium swell watching NL now
Last game turn around got me poggin out my noggin
I've never played chess but I feel like I'm learning a lot from this series
9:46 if black pushed the c4 pawn after you castled, he could either take your horse for a pawn or, if you defended the horse by capping him, take your bishop and then immediately be attacking the tower. That's probaby why the engine didnt like the castle
In the first game when it suggests you move the king and you weren't sure why, it is because if they advanced their pawn they hit you with a double attack, and would have won a pawn and messed up your structure
18:40 unseen pins saving you from a bad situation, we've all been there
10 minute chess is actually so pogulus thank you for getting me into it ryan
Castling was a mistake probably due to opponent getting to play c3. This attacks your knight and opens up an attack on your bishop
The title is so creative you can see the pog juice seeping out of it.
That's an odd pog, but okay
Key Moments analysis was pretty pogged
Lol that blunder in the first game was you blundering a potential discovered attack against your undefended bishop, while the pawn moves to attack the knight. The king used to guard that bishop, thats why casteling was a mistake.
So many opportunity to fork queen king with that rook
You wanna get nuts? Come on, let's get nuts!
-Batman, and also NL
Northern "Jocquère" Lion
I never imagined it would be this entertaining to watch someone play chess.
I'm waiting for a 30-minute game special. Maybe the series finale?
this is a great series because chess cant really get stale
this is maybe the best title for an NL video ever
In the game of chess you never let your opponent see your pieces.
C4, an explosive opening!
Amazingly pogged title
I am loving the chess series. You inspired me to log on and get my butt kicked. I need to scrub hard to get rid of the rust.
