- I'm playing on Chess.com -- these aren't sponsored videos but the site seems pretty cool.
Chess has been having a resurgence in popularity this year so I have finally acquiesced to semi-popular demand and started to play a bit. First, let's hone our skills and get a little more warmed up and then let's conquer chess dot com one board gamer at a time.

About this game:
the horse moves like an L - Hry
The one phrase Magnus Carlsen keeps hearing in his nightmares “wanna get weird? Let’s get weird.”
no...no egg, I don't wanna trade queens
Why did I picture Ryan saying that in the most seductive voice my mind could imagine lmfao
@@Northernlion "Nei, Egg, jeg vil ikke bytte dronning"
*carlsen
@@genericusername4206 How dare
Add this one to the list of NL verbiage:
"It's a thinking men's game" = "My plan has gone awry and now I'm completely stumped".
"Let's get weird" = I haven't thought this through.
"You wanna trade fine let's trade" = The game's going too slowly, let's get som Poggys going in the comments section
“It’s a complicated board state” = “I’m totally fucked”
NL: I dare you to move it there.
(Opponent does)
NL: oh crap
I love this series so much it feels like he's been playing it for years huge pog energy radiates from egg playing chess
this series is like a pog singularity
@@Nealrex101 pogularity?
I mean he has been playing for literal years, just with a huge gap between childhood and now.
I personally would love to see NL give 5D Chess another crack, and just take the five minutes to read through the instructions first.
I feel that the initial video didn't go well because it was becoming popular at the time and with everything moving so fast in real life, NL didn't have the time read a big list of instructions on a game for a 'let's look at' style video.
Coupled with being worried about how the community would view chess (NL said numerous times that he would never play chess on stream or CZcams) he was already hesitant the video would not do well.
Now we are further on and chess is Pogging. NL is really good at this game! And the community digs it no matter what. Plus there's a routine around his new streaming schedule.
I pray for redemption and seeing 5D chess again. I think it would be huge to play on Twitch to have that instant feedback.
Can’t wait to see the episode where NL has the GM tag.
Edit: he’s drawing arrows for plays 5 moves in the future. He’s basically already a real GM already.
*Move 2 happens* "I'm gonna mark this down as a win."
Can’t wait lol

If anyone is wondering why it's so hard to get a brilliant move, you have to make a best move the engine didnt see.
I had a feeling it was something like that thanks for confirming!
Is that not impossible?
@@captainevy3133 Not exactly. Last match I watched between Wesley So vs. Magnus Carlsen, Wesley So managed to squeeze in a Brilliant move in one of his victories. But that must give you an idea at what level you must be playing to manage a "brilliant" move.
@@captainevy3133 its definitely incredibly rare but engines aren't perfect. For example engines dont really like gambits because your giving up something. An engine always wants to know the most optimal move so giving material up for positioning is difficult because the engine can have difficulty weighing that vs other options.
@@allenhelmuth2214 is it something to do with trees?

@@davidrobins1021 hello Beth
i was refreshing for today's upload, thanks for the daily chess video's
The chess belongs to the video?
I love how you refer to the engine's evaluations as "they like" or "they hate", etc., as if it's not a computer running Stockfish or Komodo doing the analysis, but a crack team of human analysts in the employ of chesscom 😂
Ahh, the old mechanical turk.
14:30 NL very concerned that the opponent might move his queen to a square his knight defends
Startled by how addictive this series is. Great work
*Game goes longer than 10 moves*
NL: "let's get weird"
I never thought I'd wake up everyday excited to watch chess. It's the best part of waking up.
Northernlion: *starts to get weird with it*
Northernlion’s Opponent: “Does anybody see how absolutely fricked this is?”
I know there's a big backlog, but the magnifying glass next to best moves shows the extrapolated lines from that point; helps explain why a move bears out to be the best.
I really hope this series doesn't end before nl's inevitable win against magnus carlsen
13:12 14:10 sensing a theme here, queens on the A file are immune to knights...
NL Game 1: Always 80%+ accuracy ignoring misclicks
NL Game 2: LETS GET WEIRD, DUDE. LETS GET NUTS.
Chess series in a nutshell.
NL: Let's get weird.
Me: Ve're going to Holland.
This series is up there with Doki Doki as the most blessed content not just on your channel, but on this entire platform. Thank you for being so consistently entertaining no matter what it is you're making content on. You have a serious talent at being entertaining, some people get viewers by being amazing at a specific game but the Egg is way above average at almost everything (except FPS sorry egg) but it's your personality we watch for. I mean you made a fucking tier list of household appliances and it was more entertaining than 90% of the other channels I watch. Thank you egg for being you
Lol the evaluation bar going ping-pong in the last analysis was great.
NL not seeing the moves he made in the analysis is Ultra Instinct levels of play
Commenting to tell the CZcams algorithm I like your chess content.
Yeah that last game had my head spinning, I couldn't track either players line.
thanks for the series NL, i appreciate all the effort and i hope this series continues for a long time :)
The bishop sacrifice on h2 is quite a common theme, however there are a few pre-requisites. Look up the "greek gift" sacrifice, it's a useful thing to know for when the opportunity arises.
Similarly, there' s the fishing pole which is quite similar going after those rook pawns.
Love the chess NL would love to see more chess collabs in the future too ♟️👴😄
imagine playing chess without being able to talk to the audience
After a rough day of feelings and trouble i am super ready for some chess, thanks NL
NL: lets get weird
*immediately blunders*
It's called a gambit duh
eggs gambit
- You cannot write Resingation without "Resin"
+ You spelled the word wrong
- Shush!
Your chess is great to watch. You're better than me so I still learn things but at least I can understand your thinking and keep up with your pace, and you make mistakes that I would make too which also helps me. I do enjoy Hikaru but there's a point where there's only so much big-brain my brain can handle! Hikaru and others that level are like gods which is fun to watch, but you're more human and that's actually better for me :)
I'm learning so much from these videos
I love this series so much, but please please please NL, right underneath the recommended/best move there's the line which the computer sees for why that's the best move. You can follow that through to understand why the computer is telling you to do some wild move. Anyways, looking forward to tomorrow's episode!
Just a tip, you can check the box for Self Analysis after the game to see what the engine's move is while you're trying different lines. Thanks for the videos!
Love watching you play Chess
NL I’ve been watching since og pubg and saw you on gothamchess’ stream. Lovin the chess content man
I love the second game. A wild, crazy ride that didn't end as badly as it could have. Games like that are why I love chess.
These series is a definition of pogchamp. Don't dare to stop them.
If you have to choose between dropping Isaac and Chess, drop Isaac twice.
That's how pogged it is.
I would have never thought someday I enjoy watching chess. This channel did it
11:49 "Live me beat out the analysis me."
You wanna get funky? Let's get funky
24:00 i was hoping you would see the skewer on the knight and bishop
He misses a rook when he takes his opponents Knight on e7, but he also said "there's nothing more to be learned" when analysing so didnt even get to that move... Always go through your games thoroughly kids ! It might feel trivial but learning the things you don't see is so much more valuable than stopping once the opponent has blundered a queen
Thank you for the inspiring games. Impressed by your good spirit, even if you lose.
21:09 he had to move the pawn because if you took the pawn then moved the bishop out it was mate.
Hey NL, there's a setting that might help you avoid the misclicks. I dont remember if you had any, but it could at least ease your mind a bit. The settings are near the opponents clock and there's one called "move method", and I think "Drag Pieces" would work better than "Click Squares"
Would love to see you try some of the varients. Maybe atomic chess or fog of war chess
"Ask not what your pieces can do for you, ask what you can do for your pieces." -GM William Hartston
NL, just a tip for endgames in general: Stop seeing pawns as a way to count points. You're consistently missing dozens of easy wins because you don't look to activate your pieces and recognize your assets (in case of the last game, an outside passed pawn that your opponent would've had to give up his knight for if only you had attempted to push it) before "putting pressure on" pawns. In this case, your poor rook stood on the g-file biting on granite, so your opponent was playing as if he had an extra piece instead of being down the exchange. If you actively search for pieces that aren't doing much for you and activate them (e.g. bringing your rook to the c-file to cut off the opponent's king from your passed pawn), you should see a major improvement in win percentage and those wins should also be much swifter.
to the tune of "shots shots shot" POG POG POG
2:20-2:40 really big plays dude, that got me hype
One of the best series imo
2:07 hitem with the greek gift!!
Nl has invented a new opening, Funk's Gambit, Weird's variation
Algorithm.
Northernlion + Chess = Good
Get on it.
when you hit the brilliance, Im gonna be so happy
In all my time playing, I’ve hit it once and it was on a fucking pawn move I thought obvious
How does one hit the brilliance? As a sub 1000 player this is like some mythical land my ancestors told me about, I'm not sure it even exists
@@DGTLCLANGAMING you have to make the best move in the game that not even the computer calculated as the best move due to the nature of how it uses trees in its coding
You missed a tinted rook.
I am very pleased with NL's skill
Man I could feel the rage on that poor soul NL DESTROYED in that first game
We appreciate you NL
Listening to this is like chess with Jack Nicholson. So weird... Good content, keep it up!
ABSOLUTELY POGGED
Lovin the series, daddy. I always watch it while eating dinner

'Well, on the other hand... There is really no positives' - Extreme 2020 energy permeating from this line
0:27, um, *actually*, you could get a better match with this with just 1 elo of change, egg. What a blunder!
A wild game with Baron Egg!
NL, you are a genius.
getting weird is one thing, getting wild is another but getting FREAKING NUTS? nl you gotta cool it
When NL says Let's get Wild, I'm like OH PLEASE YEAH
I'm gonna start pre-moving the like button in the opening of these videos. Seems pretty safe.
A definitely pog champ. Especially when this comment raises engagement
3:37 i really wanted him to play b4 (threatening b5) and try to go for Anastasia mate (Ne7 Kh7, Qh4#)
Poggy as always
for move 18 knight e6 would be better in order to fork the rooks
"I'll put on some Enelle chess to bore myself to sleep." My gourd and my pog then laughed for 34 minutes.
Flabbergasted that NL *won* on clock management.
At 9:45, maybe they prefer the queen there because the black black-squared is blocking the d pawn, so the way they develop their light-square bishop is by pushing the b pawn. But if your queen is there, you just take their rook if they do that. So, it makes it harder for them to develop it. It also covers all the forward squares of their knight on f6. Maybe?
He's beginning to believe
Awesome video
He really is getting better
i hate it when the board is all clogged up at the start some sacrifice pawns are fine with me because a need clear lanes of fire for my bisops, rooks and queen
5:37 you could have taken the rook
Straight facts
Im still pogged from last episode! NL is Already GM no cap.
The funny story about a man who was the best CZcamsr in the world and, after one day saying "Let's try some chess puzzles for today, thought it might be a funny idea" fell into a chess for love so big that he quit everything to go to tournaments.
man is literally a pawn
"Matts" from Argentina was in fact Matías (ma-TEE-as) from Argentina, but thanks for the daily video, these are very interesting to watch.
Episode premise: Not allowed to use "Let's get weird" tactics
Or NL must rethink his strategy for another minute after deciding a "You wanna get weird?" tactic
2:22-2:23 fastest ive ever gone from thinking streamer was a stupid dunga bunga to spitting out my cereal meme style. This is why hes 1500 and im 150.
Wave of pawns, deploy!!!!
I was hoping for the analysis of the first game to go longer. I saw a line where NL checked the king on g8 with his knight on f6. If black took with the pawn nl had an attack with the bishop and queen. Not sure how good this was bit was hoping the analysis would tell me
You can always recreate it yourself and try it out.
In chess, it's not over till it's poged...
I like when he calls the engine "they" like it's actually just a committee of chess geniuses judging each move.
I want more ;P
25:20 use the other rook and you win a piece
That’s boring directly translates to send it in NLs brain
i am a lowly 700 but i was shouting "i was right" around 33:30 because the computer vindicated me yelling at the opponent to "just go rook a4"
click to 2:09 to hear NL just BLATANTLY flirting with oppo
