  • @psalm2forliberty577
    @psalm2forliberty577 Před rokem +5

    Takeoff & landing 🛬 are the most difficult phases of ✈️ flight; hence the majority of aviation accidents cluster around the flight path in & out of Airports.
    Obviously the higher the traffic the greater chance for accidents.
    Our safety systems are better than ever - did you know from 2009 to 2019 there wasn't a single commercial aviation fatality or major injury in the USA ?
    Pretty amazing !
    When I was a kid (70-80s) I expected to see whole planes full of people fall out of the sky, much like the Flight 90 disaster here.
    Thank the LORD they've become very very rare occurrences - with every tragic crash & death resulting in safer systems & procedures.
    Thank you for this reminder !

    One of the heroes of this disaster was Arland D. Williams Jr. On June 6, 1983, Williams was posthumously awarded the United States Coast Guard's Gold Lifesaving Medal in a White House Oval Office presentation by President Ronald Reagan and Secretary of Transportation, Elizabeth H. Dole. Arland's mother, Mrs. Virginia Williams accepted the medal on her son's behalf.
    In March, 1985, the city government for the District of Columbia, renamed the repaired 14th Street Bridge, the "Arland D. Williams Jr Memorial Bridge" in his honor.
    In 2003, a new elementary school was named the Arland D. Williams Jr. Elementary School in his hometown of Mattoon, Illinois.

  • @moparedtn
    @moparedtn Před rokem +2

    Well done, young man. You do the story justice here.
    I was 21 and living in "NOVA" in those days and remember it well - it was a terrible day, not only for the
    Flight 90 crash but also for the Metro subway crash that happened about a half hour later in the city;
    more folks died in that one, too.
    My dad was one of thousands stuck in traffic at the 14th St bridge that day; the commuter van he owned
    ran from his job at USPS HQ and came across the bridge every day. They literally were sitting still at the
    very beginning of the bridge, so the plane came down basically directly in front of them!
    If traffic had not been at a standstill, who knows - my dad and his passengers could have been lost, too.
    Just an awful, terrible day all around...
    Some good things did come from the tragedy, though - the VA and DC emergency response leaders got
    together and worked out plans for cooperation in emergencies afterwards (there wasn't a plan before!),
    which helped considerably during 9/11 in later years for example.
    Our President at the time (Reagan) opened his state of the union speech a few days later by calling out
    some of the heroes' names of the tragedies first thing - something presidents have continued to do ever
    since in their own SOTU speeches.
    I think all of it also softened some hard hearts in the region, too - it's easy to get a tough skin living in
    a big city like DC, after all - but I remember people just being nicer to one another after that, at least
    for a little while anyways.
    - Ed on the Ridge

    Ironic and sad. I am a Meteorologist actually working now at the weather office at KDCA (Reagan National Airport) on the roof of Terminal A. I was eating lunch while watching your video. The ironic part is that from time to time while watching your video, I would look out the window, right behind the computure monitor, and look at the bridge the plane hit, about 1/3 of a mile away. I was only 18 when the accident happened and didn't start working at KDCA until 1996. I have coworkers who WERE working that day. They didn't see the plane take off but they heard the crash. One co-worker said it sounded like someone rolling a large metal trashcan down some stairs. There are still two bodies buried in the mud there, a woman and a baby whom were never recovered. So sad.

  • @davenamanda
    @davenamanda Před 11 měsíci +2

    What a horrible day that was. I was at work that day nearby and heard an unending stream of emergency vehicles. You have to live in DC to understand how snow affects things. It's a nightmare, especially for those sitting still in traffic on snow covered bridges. Cars cannot move very fast in the snow and things get pretty slick, with a lot of accidents. The plows can't get through to do their job because the cars (and trucks) aren't moving. It turns into a mess in a hurry. Regarding your reporting of the Air Florida crash, you were right on target with all the details of what happened. You apparently spent a good deal of time researching the subject and I thank you for that. I couldn't have reported it any better. Very accurate and very well delivered. As you know, Gravelly Point park and boat ramp are literally feet away from the main runway of the airport. Planes are either taking off directly overhead or coming in for a landing overhead as well. It's a very good vantage point to watch the aircraft.

    I've always remembered that. It was before cable and we weren't used to seeing things like this as it was happening. The sight of the flight attendant being lifted in the air by the helicopter was stunning and so memorable. Imagine that compared to what we see now. I followed the status of the flight attendant, Kelly. Her father was an airline pilot and she said she was never going to fly again or at least as a flight attendant. After a year or so, she did return.

    I remember reading recently that one person would need to fly everyday for 50,000 years before an accident would be imminent. Perhaps a odd demonstration of the odds. Flying is much safer than driving or riding a bicycle in a city. We aren't rational about our perception of risk.

    This was a year before I was born and I have never heard of it before. I’m very surprised I haven’t. I’m glad mobile instinct covered this for me.
