  • In May 2018, Coffee or Die's Marty Skovlund, Jr. embedded with Special Forces in Afghanistan's violent Nangarhar Province. What many didn't see in the "Embedded with Special Forces in Afghanistan" videos was the perspective of the conventional infantry troops that supported the Green Berets at COP Blackfish.
    Until now.

I spent 4 weeks training with an ODA at Dugway with my Engineer unit. I was with a 24 man Assault/Breach PLT, so we had a ratio of 2/1 with those guys. We were an hour and a half away from cantonment, and had Navy SH-60s supporting our missions. The knowledge and experience I gained in those 4 weeks was exponential compared to my total 9 years in service. They're totally cool guys, but as a Sgt the increased my knowledge and skill set so far beyond just being in a line unit. Long story short for guys that are still in, if you're cross training or embedded with them, watch them, ask good questions, learn learn learn!

Working with SF was the best experience I’ve ever had in the army. We were the guys who replaced the 4th ID dudes and took over the attached infantry role for most of 2019. SF guys are great dudes who love to teach you things and hang out. They would sit around worth us and play games, watch movies, work out, on base the SF ran everything and the way they saw it, because we were with them, we were allowed to follow the same rules and do the same things as them. Made the FST doctors and CRAM guys all butt hurt that we didn’t have to listen to them or do stupid things they did. I still talk to a lot of those SF dudes and have made great friends with them. If you aren’t Special Operations you rarely get the opportunity to learn the things they have to teach you. My battalion was Very lucky to have gotten to do that mission while the rest of the brigade was doing base security and other stupid stuff that is the job of MPs not infantry.

Until you ship home, and the pin drops regarding what you've seen, done, and allowed to happen.
Many see themselves as heroes, but after 20 years and onwards of fighting. Many question the purpose for fighting
Many see who the real bad people are.
It comes to the point that personal denial just no longer works to justify such actions and the conscience can only offer one way out for the hopeless.
The ones who seek redemption are fortunate. In what manner or form is an individual choice. Salvation is only gained by those who seek it.

Guys, be professional, stop talking about supporting/working with SF. I know its hard when a camera is shoved into your face, when every week a new SEAL book/interview/film is being released. When someone comes up to you and says they will make you famous, just nod and walk away.
OPSEC, operational security, I know this is 2 years old, but the info that can be gathered from videos like this (not just this one) is huge. Weapon makes/load outs, Base layouts, who is wearing what (armour) Tactical response times/procedures, Troop rotations, hell even the smallest detail can give the enemy an edge.

I was more aiming at the soldiers you often see in these types of clips who boast about SF work, who want to big themselves up on video/tv/youtube, who want their friends to see them in a new light. I think we should call it SEAL syndrome.
Im not belittling what these ppl do for your country, but they need to be more circumspect in the field or once they leave service. I think it has gotten alot worse over the past 20/30 years. Of course, with the heightened op tempo brought on by the middle east situations and terrorist threats, the idolisation of these SF ppl and the money that can be made from a book/film deal, its to be expected (I think it all started in a major way with our own SAS " Bravo two zero" from the mid 90s)
You dont hear much from your Green Berets or our SBS, a different sort of personality maybe? TBH i think there should be some sort of 5 year gag order placed on ALL SF/supporting assets when they leave.

Can't just wipe out an enemy who blends in/hides among the population, with Western Nations ROE/morals. They'd have to disregard of all that to truly exterminate a guerilla threat.
