  • They were the first U.S. soldiers to set foot in this remote corner of Logar province in more than three years. Deployed to support an Afghan battalion, they did not intend to engage in combat. The Taliban, however, had other plans for them. “Our role wasn’t really to fight,” said Lt. Graham Hennig, a platoon leader with Dragon Troop. “It just so happened that the fight crept it’s way up to us.”

They will hold some areas. Even before the war the Taliban did not control the whole country. From the perspective of US politics the war has been a total loss. We are now desperately trying to negotiate the same deal the Taliban gave us before we entered the country. We will probably get a worse deal than had we never invaded. But on the other hand Afghanistan is actually a better country than before we entered. Its still filled with poverty and human rights abuses. But the poverty is not as extreme as before we entered and the Taliban have actually moderated to a degree to gain acceptance in a somewhat more education society.
This is kinda the opposite of Iraq. In Iraq we did eventually achieve the political objectives. But in the process the country was set back at least a couple of decades.
