  • Wonder Woman a staple at DC Comics for decades. She has fought alongside the Justice League and the rest of the Trinity, Superman and Batman. Over the years some stories have hypothesised what this Amazon would be like as a mother. One such instance was in the rebirth era. The storyline Legacy gave her a son named Hunter Prince. Just how did being exposed to the Amazons of Themyscira alter his development? Why does he have such rage towards Diana Prince? Is the idea of Wonder Woman having a son an interesting concept? We discuss here on Casually Comics!

I think he could be interesting if you tied him to a different aspect of Greek Mythology than Diana. Maybe he's an ally to minor deities or fights for the Titans to try and bring down Zeus and the new pantheon? Just so long as he doesn't turn into a Kratos knockoff.

I think the idea of Wonder Woman having a son is much more interesting than her having a daughter. Like, it opens the gate for a much more unique dynamic than Batman and Superman had with thier childern, cause they have father figures who can show them how to deal with boys, not so much with Diana who will have to learn how to be not just a mother, but mother of a boy who isn't welcomed by her own society, him being different, not like her. It can show how actually wise and strong she is, cause she can deal with tough and complex situations like this.

I like the idea of Wonder Woman having both a son and daughter. It presents the angle of her maybe treating one better than the other (her son, because she's fascinated by the concept of raising one or she overcompensates for potential feelings of favouritism towards his sister making both feel insufficient or develop a level of jealousy/resentment towards each other; or her daughter succumbing to biases about how much nurturing boys need and treating him like the grown men she knows-who take on more than they should-or just not relating to him and stepping back in his upbringing to focus on the training of both kids, but adding an additional layer of pampering with her daughter that she would have liked to receive specifically from her mother and inadvertently making her son feel like an aside).
This could manifest with them as twins or an older sibling & younger sibling dynamic where having a girl then a boy introduces a drastic shake up in their lives, or having a girl second and her son having to reconcile with him being an anomaly and Wonder Woman-or her sisters-acting drastically different with his sister's birth.
Then there's just what kind of man he would be raised to be. What I've noticed of the the ladies of Themiscyra is that most iterations view men as violent and destructive, so there is a likelihood that he would be raised less like a warrior and more like a pacifist, maybe even a healer (possibly receiving blessings for his endeavors in the field). With him having an added layer of unwarranted guilt of what he 'could become' or a fear of being drawn in by it. And his sister fully embracing her warrior upbringing and acting as either a protector or antagonizer (in an effort to get him to grow a spine/defend himself with what skills he did learn).

It would definitively be very interesting to explore those family dynamics… like the son feeling resentful and neglected by a mother who prioritizes her daughter, or him struggling with his relationship with his own masculinity in a society that teaches him that men are inherently violent… like even if he was allowed in themyscira, would that have messed him up psychologically? Would that have led to Diana confronting the flaws of her society?
A trans son would also be very interesting. Would the Amazons be for example disgusted at him, seeing him as an “abomination” bc he was expected to be the next Wonder Woman but he is instead a man?

This tragic parents vs children comic reminds a lot of the tragic story of Joel, Superman's son in the Trilogy "Elseworlds: Generations". For those who don't know, Joel was born without powers due to his mother being exposed to kryptonite during her pregnancy. Although he doesn't care at first, the UltraHumanite finds and brainwashes him by "revealing" that Clark took his powers on purpose in order to prevent the child from rebelling against him, causing the boy to develop an enormous hatred for his family. Finally, Joel, wearing the Lex Luthor suit, and Ultra-Humanite crash his sister Kara's wedding to Batman's son and brutally murders her and Lois. After fulfilling his revenge, Joel begins to feel guilty, but before he can do anything, he is killed by the Ultra-Humanite. A truly tragic life

Out of all of Diana’a future children, he’s my favorite. The idea of Wonder Woman having a male child on its own is an interesting idea but the concept of she abandoning him for whatever reason and he having a grudge against her for it it’s really interesting. I’m no expert on Wonder Woman and her stories but even I know that’s something hard to expect from her. It’s an interesting concept. It kind helps see that all heroes even her aren’t perfect gods, but just people who make mistakes and can be overwhelm by certain situations. There’s so much that can be done with that theme; maybe he could be raise only on paradise island or exclusively anywhere else, he could become a hero to prove his worth or a villain if he gives up on himself. They could even give him a sister to showcase how different he is from other Amazons by how different everyone treats them. Maybe they could even do that cliché story where there’s a prophecy of Diana having an evil offspring then years later something happens and everyone thinks he’s responsible just because he’s a man but at the end it was his sister who was evil for whatever reason. When it comes to how the other Amazons would react to the idea or the fact that someone like Hunter exist can be very different depending on the continuity, I would like that within the island they all have different opinions and some maybe had to pretend to like or hate him to keep appearance. I personally like that neither Steve or Clark are the father. It would be a good twist if the father was just a normal man. I’m not talking about a one nightstand with a stranger but maybe a new character or a friend from her civilian identity and they agree to keep him as a secret out of fear of what the Amazons would do if they find out.

Hell, after learning of this amazing and much more interesting idea of Wonder Woman having a son gave me an interesting story idea.
Just pull a Finding Nemo on the two where her son either taken or gets lost across the universe shortly after the two of them got into either a fight or something where their relationship was getting very strain with the son being around 11-12 years old. Having WW going through a LONG journey trying to find him while dealing with what she did, regrets and thoughts she wish could take back and facing real fears of possibly never finding her kid ever again or finding him dead like any parent would most definitely have.
And vice versa with her son on his own journey of just trying to get back home, but gets caught with all sorts life changing shenanigans the universe has to offer while going through self discovery as a person, finding a reason if he ever matters in the first place, thinking self doubt if his mom would be better off not finding him if that would make her happy, learning to control his powers on his own and learn to be happy with himself.

Hunter has a ton of potential especially if they were to make him a long lost sibling of one of Diana’s Daughters. Giving both characters a mirror to look at themselves in.
It could open up an interesting exploration of fanatically Dogmatic Ideologies like the Amazons’ particularly in relation to gender politics. Tackling the question of becoming an exact mirror of the oppression they built their ideology in response to.
I like the concept of Hunter Prince but don’t think they did enough with it. I would also probably use the new Daughter of Diana as his counterpart because it could give her a lot of depth by making her question the bad bitch, boss babe thing she has going on and steering away from the telling instead of showing approach to illustrating her strength.

Or maybe it's a mix some Amazons are okay with it but maybe some aren't and one becomes a villain thinking Diana betrayed their ways.
Or maybe he was raised in the island for some reason and deal with what happens when she takes him off the island and maybe there's a bigger reason for why he was kept there for like first 10 or so years of his life .

In my headcanon, it makes sense that Jessica Cruz would have a crush on Bart Allen (who became the Flash in 2011 post-Flashpoint) during this time because she thought that he was cute and that she grew up seeing him doing something during his Impulse and Kid Flash years long before she and Bart became friends (just like Alan Scott and Jay Garrick; Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Barry Allen; Kyle Rayner and Wally West; Jenni-Lynn Hayden, Todd Rice, and Jesse Chambers; Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, Jo Mullien, and Bart Allen; and Kelly Quintela, Tai Pham, Jai and Irey West, and Ace West).
This would mean that by Dawn of DC in 2023, Barry Allen would be 60 years old (but looks 44 years old because of the Speed Force) married to Iris West with twins born in the 30th Century, Bart Allen would be 34 years old (but looks 22 years old) married to Carol Bucklen with a son named Maxwell Jason “Max” Allen, and Jessica Cruz would be in her late-20s or early-30s being active as a Green Lantern.

As someone who has read Wonder Woman comics since I was thirteen, Diana would never abandon her child if she had one. As for the Amazons, how they react would depend on which Amazons they are. The golden age Amazons would accept her having a son, but would need to petition the gods for him to be allowed on the island. The post crisis Amazons would be mixed half of them would accept it, while the other half would fear the change a male child would bring to the lives they've grown accustomed to. In one of Perez's earlies Wonder Woman stories, she meets the Bana Mightdall Amazons who are portrayed as straw feminists, while the Themysciran Amazons are presented as being opened to having men on the island and joining the outside world again. The New 52 Amazons would not accept Diana having a male child. Their reaction to Diana having a male child just depends on which version of the Amazons are used in the story.

I like the context of immortal Amazons. (Meaning they don’t age, and come from antiquity, not that they can’t be killed in battle.) In that version of the Wonder Woman tale, the idea of Hunter changes dramatically. He’d be only the second child, after Diana, and the first to challenge the matriarchy of Themiscyra. The Amazons likely banish Diana, but I think she raises the boy in her new world, and never lets on about her family’s betrayal. Teenagers are not subtle people, so when Hunter finally learns why he’s never seen his homeland, he blames the one person trying to protect him: his mom. Superman could talk to Diana about her choice (or Batman, uncomfortably) and recap how she made it. Then Hunter falls in with a bad crowd, or smokes a space doobie or something, and the two really clash. Diana ultimately decides to stand up for her son, convincing her people that the best way to change man’s world from this thing that they hate is to teach the next generation how to be better. Hunter still only gets to visit, though-for training…

Since you mentioned what hearing something brings randomly to your mind, I must say that hearing about wonder woman giving her son to be raised by someone else, I immediately thought of Xena who gave her son to centaurs to raise and protect him. Let's be honest Xena was clearly modelled after wonder woman even if she didn't have super powers and it was made clear by the show that she wasn't an Amazon. That doesn't mean of course that it isn't one of my favourite series and I will be forever grateful to Sam Raimi for producing. Others appreciate him for "evil dead", others for "Spiderman", me for "Xena the warrior Princess"😅

I don't really agree with the overall idea of the sons of Themiscyra as a whole, ditto with the boys being thrown into the sea after being borrn. It potrays the supposedly enlightened culture that shaped Diana's values as not merely flawed, but monstrous and barbaric. Sure, flaws and hypocrisy is one thing, but murdering babies or throwing newborns to slavery.... these are not sins that can be forgiven.
The idea of Wonder Woman having to raise a son is an interesting idea though. And if Trinity stays around, they can possibly play with sibling dynamics by having him be the younger one. But we need to see her raising him playing out. Not being told by an already adult son from the future. No, let us see Diana dealing with this as it happens. Let us see the choice she makes when he is born. How she handles raising him.

Would Diana fight for her son to have a place with the Amazons? Would she leave the Amazons only returning if 100% needed?
I think it opens up more stories that can be told. Unlike with a daughter, I feel like there is no challenge there. Unless the daughter is a Trans Man (Born Female), that I feel would open up so many interesting ideas. How would Amazon Treat them? how would Wonder Woman react? Love the concept of hunter. I really wish they didn't go the "The Darkness is why she abandoned you" thing. I would have preferred one of three things:
    1. Amazonian society, being what it is, meant that she wasn't allowed to raise or have any contact at all with her son. And, even though she didn't want to, as a leader of the Amazons, she was pressured to hold to that standard and so abandoned him.
    2. Having been raised as an Amazon, Diana abandoned him without a second thought because doing such things is *so ingrained* into her culture that she never thought to question it. You know, like how a lot of problematic stuff in cultures often go unquestioned because no one stops to think about it. Then, when confronted by Hunter about the damage she caused because of this (her son grew up feeling unloved and unwanted, and as a result not only hates her, but himself), Diana works to repair the damage she caused and both she and Hunter become better for it.
    3. Some combination of the two.
I think idea 1 is good for maybe a one-off story because "I was forced to give you up, but it destroyed me inside" would make the interpersonal issues easier to resolve in a shorter format. Meanwhile, idea 2 can't be as easily patched up like that and those wounds would take time to fix.

My own values make me pretty biased on this. I'd be very interested in a story where Wonder Woman does have a son (with Steve Trevor or Superman as the possible candidates for his father) and is ostracized by Themyscira by refusing to give him up. So her position as their ambassador and champion in the outside world is questioned and another Amazon, possibly Nubia or Artemis, gets that role. This means Wonder Woman has to grapple with Motherhood and losing her culture's blessing.
Another interesting idea that would require a very delicate hand, would be if Wonder Woman had a biologically female baby, who was transgender and wanted to transition after growing up in Amazon culture. Now this sounds pretty fanficy and would be a hot potato to write, but I think the controversy and potential story of dealing with gender dysmorphia in a culture with such extreme gender roles could be interesting.
At this point I'm a little more interested in if they're going to introduce Trinty with a proper backstory.

Like you can dress however you want but use for the love of the gods she/her pronouns. Maybe instead of one side is right they can come to an understanding. Or the Amazons dont see transgenderism as a thing. Like you are born a woman and no matter what you do you will stay a woman. Idk which one would be better.

I like the idea of Hunter being raised by his biological father, Steve Trevor on an army base in the middle of America. He knows who his mother is and that she chose to continue as an Amazon rather than raise him. It was a difficult decision, but she felt a duty to her people and the world at large. Steve devoted his life to preparing his super powered son for life as a hero while Diana saw him when she could. But as time went on she was called on more and more until one day she visits and realizes that, due to her virtual immortality, she doesn’t recognize the passage of time like mortals do and it’s been years since she’s seen her son. Steve has developed cancer and is dying middle aged, but still retains the same love for Diana. Hunter resents her not just for himself, but for the hold she still has on his dad that Hunter thinks has kept him from moving on and being truly happy with someone else. Diana, desperate to make things right, tried to bring the Amazonian healing light to Steve, but they forbid her from doing so. She is forced to draw arms against her sisters and manages to get to Steve, with barely enough time to say goodbye. Due to her actions she is officially banished from her home, but since it was done as an act of love Aphrodite herself intervenes and gives Diana a task to complete to redeem herself. She asks Hunter’s forgiveness and they part ways. Eventually they cross paths again and, over time, they reconnect and start to develop a relationship. One day, she appears at Hunter’s home with a birthday present. It’s a date she never forgets, even if she forgets the year. Suddenly Aphrodite appears and says her task is complete. She had to prove to her son how much she loves him. She is allowed to go home, but decides to stay with Hunter and a pregnant Cruise. Since she was unable to be a good mother, she wants to try her hand at being a good grandmother.

If Hunter Prince existed in the main DCU, then it would make sense for him to be the son of Conner Kent (who became the second Superman since 2011, or ten years before Dawn of DC, making him 35 years old by 2023) and Cassie Sandsmark (who became Earth-One’s first - or New Earth’s/Prime Earth’s third - Fury since 2011, or ten years before Dawn of DC, making her 33 years old by 2023) born this year. That way, we get to see him have a wonderful childhood, adolescence, and adulthood being raised by the practical brother of Clark Kent Superman and the great-aunt of Diana of Paradise Island Wonder Woman.
By the time he’s ten years old in 2033 (or ten years after Dawn of DC), Hunter would make his debut as the Super Wonder, making sure that with the combined powers of both his parents, he would use his powers to help people as much as he can.
That same year, his friends Maxwell Jason “Max” Allen (son of Bart Allen Flash and Carol Bucklen) and Alvin Drake, Jack Bruce Drake, and Barbara Cassandra “B.C.” Drake (children of Tim Drake Red Robin and Stephanie Brown Batgirl) would make their debut as Mercury, Cardinal, Gray Ghost, and Redbird; and they would all form the Superkids. They would all use their powers to help people and become a part of the next generation of heroes.

When they announced Chris Pine was returning for the Wonder Woman sequel, I thought he should play Diana's son. While any son conceived that night in the French village would almost be old enough for Social Security 1984, he would also be a vicus-god (i.e., 1/4 god) and could therefore be immortal. Granted, that would have made the romantic subplot awkward, even more, awkward than the way Diana and Steve just used a stranger's body for sex. But if they dropped the romance, I think they could have written a pretty cool script about Wonder Woman and her 1/2 as a wonderful son. Alternatively, Flash could have time traveled to the night Steve died and grabbed him just after he fired into the plane's cabin, but before he died. There would be no timeline issues (unless they wanted to create them) with that because it shouldn't affect the timeline prior to whenever the movie was set. But I still think Pine should have played a son that was the spitting image of James T. Kirk, err I mean Steve Trevor.

I think a story about Hunter being born can have interesting ramifications on Hippolyta’s character. Here me out, after seeing her grandson Hippolyta falls in love with him and decides the rules of Themyscira which causes a schism within the nation as a majority of the Amazons try to overthrow her. Both Wonder Woman and Hippolyta then have to go into hiding with the newborn Hunter, as Hippolyta has to reconcile with the murdering of all the male Amazon babies like her grandson which she is ultimately responsible for.

My thought about this character....if wonder woman was magic and made from clay (as one back story suggests) could she even have kids? If wonderwoman is the daughter of Ares and then has demigod powers- there is nothing to say those powers can be inherited..unless the father is also a demigod or metahuman...Hunter opens a huge can of crazyness for writers of the comic. I guess if we assume WonderWoman is a daughter of Ares, then as a demigod she could have kids- and letting Clark and Lois raise him seems more of an act of love then taking him to Ares to be raised by the god of war.

Honestly Wonder Woman having a Son would be really interesting specifically due to how Themyscira views/ treats men. So I do think they could bring at the very least a similar character into the fray.
However I don’t foresee any realist situation where he “comes from a matriarchal society and views man’s world as disgusting and overly oppressive to women.” If anything I could see him viewing many arguments commonly touted by feminism as petty, because “male children born where I come from were either murdered immediately or sent to work at a labor camp. This wage gap you speak of is pathetic.”

I could belive Diana would abandon her son due to traditions before leaving or very early after leaving the island. But after being in mans world and interacting with her friends and loved ones she made then the answer would be no. In fact if that was demanded of her by her mother after that point I don't think she would even hesitate to speak out against it. Just flat out take whatever consequence.

I do like the fact that DC has more recently tried to retcon Themyscira to make the Amazons less like serial man killers but it still doesn’t sit right with me how misandristic they are when wonder woman is meant to be a symbol of love, compassion, and equality. I understand that it’s kind of difficult to portray a gender-dominant isolationist nation as not being sexist, but it feels kind of weird having a character who was originally created to push gender equality come from a sexist background where her sex is favored. It also feels kind of weird for her to push for gender equality in her home nation only to have it not go well for the same reason that she is meant to be a symbol of gender equality. I understand that the creator of Wonder Woman was more so a philogynist than he was a feminist but it doesn’t change the fact that gender equality was always at the core of the character.

I honestly think that giving wonder woman a son versus a daughter is far more compelling given the, lets face it we don't want to say it but they are, racist nature of the Amazons. The Amazon's tends to be one of the rare cases in fiction where such a society is typically not made to face their own prejudice, or at least rarely. Even the Wonder Woman movies conveniently ignores that aspect of their society and instead chooses to celebrate that they are an all female society which honestly not only wouldn't work in reality but doesn't even work in fiction. Giving her a daughter is little more than feeding into that same mentality. Giving her a son would finally force her to realize just how bigoted she herself and her society is. Its one thing when the broken kids are someone else's, its another thing when they are yours.

One I thing I think everyone forgets is that there is actually a case of an Amazon having a son before Hunter, and that's with Donna Troy. In the comics Donna has a son named Robbie Long, and yes while he did die before the New 52 as a toddler, he is back as a kid (probably 10 or 12) in modern comics (along with Garth's (aka Tempest) son Cerdian. I feel like this idea of a male amazon would be more interesting to explore with Robbie since in the New 52, Donna led a mass murder of the sons of Themescyra. And now that woman has a son, who is now also an incredibly powerful magic user.

It could be interesting for Wonder Woman to have two children, a son and a daughter. Oh, ants actually don't creep me out much, either. But I try to make sure they especially don't have any interest in being inside the house. I think if Diana has a son, she should turn to Bruce. "Hey Bruce, I have a problem. The Amazonians would never let me raise my son. You have like 4. You can raise mine, too, right? You also deal with superpowers all the time. He'll likely be at least half as strong as me." Boom.

Wonder Woman having a son is way more interesting than having a daughter, and it gives the opportunity to address the flaws in the Amazons society as such an antiquated and gender essentialist society. There are many different routes it can one as other ppl have pointed out. Would she reject her ppl’s teachings and raise him? Would she abandon him?
What if she has twins, one boy, one girl, and raises the girl as a successor, leaving to her son feeling resentful and abandoned, while her daughter feels pressured? What if she has a female child but then the child realized he is a trans man? How would the Amazons react? Would they want to kill him as an “abomination” to their ppl? What if the son is accepted in Themyscira, but growing up in a society that is disdainful of men messes him up, and he grows up struggling with his own own masculinity, feeling like he never belonged?

4:28 Yes, and it’s strange for Barry Allen Flash and Jessica Cruz Green Lantern (at least on Earth-One/New Earth/Prime Earth) to have three kids, even though during this time Barry Allen was in a romantic relationship with Iris West during Joshua Williamson’s Flash run, and both of them were active as heroes 57 years in real-time (or 30 years in sliding time) and two generations apart.
