  • 2023 saw the Dawn Of DC at DC Comics. Across the line titles were relaunched, new characters introduced, status quos shaken. Wonder Woman reached issue 800 and was set to begin a new era with a new #,1 and new creative team. Tom King and Daniel Sampere take on Diana Prince for a new dawn and that also includes some new characters. Wonder Woman has a daughter...again. This time her name is Trinity or Elizabeth Marston Prince. She was created in part to compliment the Supersons, and she is the best at all the things, and that's a quote. Does Trinity stick the landing of her first appearance? Is she a girlboss? We discuss here on Casually Comics!

She certainly needs a personality shift. maybe the whole business of her behavior being her as the prophesy child thing, only for her to find the prophesy actually is a lie, or she misread the prophesy and its actually something she does not actually want. arrogant grating personalities usually are supposed to be coupled with a humbling moment to break the break the personality and make something new from it, hopefully better than the original personality.

I think the problem with her 'Bantery' dialogue with the Super Sons is just how long it all is. If it was succinct and punchy, it would feel like she was just teasing them, but based on the panels shown here, it's like she's going on mini-monologues about why they unironically suck. I do believe, based on the context, they really did intend for her to be friendly with them, but intent and execution don't always meet.

    • @Vincent.E.M.Thorn.Author
      @Vincent.E.M.Thorn.Author Před rokem +31

Adding to this, since it's living rent-free in my head, I think her intro would have been more endearing if, instead of berating the Super Sons, then making her own excuses about her own awesomeness, if she had started off with "Hey, guys, sorry I'm late, but I got tied up fighting twelve gods". It still would have had the same boast without being nearly ss abrasive. And it would save on panel space.

    • @right_hand_power7960
      @right_hand_power7960 Před rokem +13

What a poor introduction. I agree that the length of the beratement drives home the character being arrogant, and/or insecure, which is is possible to be both simultaneously. It definitely would have read much better if her dialogue were less berating, because as is, it doesn't sound like teasing.
In my opinion, without previously established context, the writers can introduce a character this way, only if in the same story, they give necessary context, or establish that the character has an otherwise healthy relationship with the other characters. Simply introducing a character this way starts the character off in a less acceptable position, as per the audience/readers.

I just read the issue yesterday and I agree with your take. There's a difference between teasing someone in a good natured way and giving people a "reasons you suck speech" (as TV Tropes calls them). I'm a guy and guys make fun of our friends all the time because it's funny. We expect to get back what we give. Trinity seemed to be legitimately saying how awesome she is and how much they suck. She came off as completely insufferable and conceited. If Jon and Damian had fired back at her the whole situation would looked much more like friends giving each other a hard time as opposed to a teenage girl who thinks she's better than everyone.

It makes her feel more tacked on when the other 2 use the original mantles and she doesn't, like she's missing something to be part of the dynamic. Like either have all 3 take up different mantles than their parents, or at least 2 of them (since Wally as the Flash doesn't feel out of place with the original Titans for example), but don't just make the new character feel like the odd one out.

That way, we get to see Wonder Woman spending time with Donna and training with her from time to time. We would’ve seen that in any issue of Wonder Woman between the Silver Age and present day.
Also, Wonder Woman’s team up with Donna Troy happened in an issue of Adventure Comics (yes, really!) in the late 70s. DC should’ve let Wonder Woman and Donna Troy team up more during that time like Superman and Supergirl, Batman and Dick Grayson Robin, Barry Allen Flash and Wally West Kid Flash, Aquaman and Aqualad, and Green Arrow and Roy Harper Speedy.

Unfortunately I think with the backdrop of GirlBoss marketing and the corporatization of rebelling against the system, “Bestest,” has a good chance of cynically taking over this character’s perception.
Overall this trend towards using, “brash overly cocky and abrasive to denote strength. Particularly in introducing new Female characters reads as telling instead of showing.

The problem with unlikable, mean, self-superior characters is you have to be clear about whether the work is agreeing with them, and the default for a protagonist is that it is: the protagonist is your viewpoint and counterarguments are seen as defensiveness or even establishing an antagonist.
In comics especially, you only have a tiny amount of time to establish a character at all in a single issue, let alone what the work thinks of them.
Which is a pity here, as i for example, really liked the DCAU version of Wonder Woman, where she is quite a bit arrogant and misogynistic at points, but is trying to be understanding.
Tom King certainly does like his character arcs, but when you need to wait 20 something issues for it to deliver, maybe it's best not to make them the main focus from the start? Who knows, this is a #0 anyway.

Yes DCAU WW would basically not get why other women weren't Amazons. Men she expected nothing of, and was pleasantly surprised all the time by the JLA guys who are the best there is if course. Ordinary men she just knew as useless and necessary to push out of the way and maybe dazzle to make them stand back and leer not interfere. But ordinary WOMEN she saw as not taking their place enough and not getting shit done. In the JLA episode where women have to run everything, WW sees no basic problem and it's Hawkgirl that has to tell her that women WANT men around.

I agree with King's quote, but Diana "falling out of the Trinity" is something DC does to her. She is only occasionally treated at the level of Batman & Superman. DC never gives her substantial respect, only sporadic. When Batman encountered Bane and Superman encountered Doomsday, what did they do with Wonder Woman? Nothing. Her 50th Anniversary they screwed over. Every event I've read has been sub-par at best, Witching Hour being the exception (plus, that's technically a JLD event). They made her the centerpiece in Death Metal and pushed her to the side immediately. They open her with a great hook and then throw it away immediately (looking at you, Rebirth). She has never had a significant encounter with the Joker. They honestly treat her like a token character, there so DC can say we have the first female superhero. It's insulting. My evidence? Greg Rucka had a great hook with Rebirth. When Diana left Themyscara, the first time, she had never been back since, though she believed she had. What a hook! It made me collect Wonder Woman for the first time. They threw it away, Rucka left, and then we started getting the same old sub-par stories. Constant stories about being in love and so forth. That can't be the centerpiece of a superhero comic. Every story can't be about the Greek pantheon, at least not a straight forword as they do it. Anyway, DC treats her poorly. I'm hoping King can stick the landing with her.

I don't know why Tom King feels that the general public doesn't think Wonder Woman isn't worthy to stand next to Superman and Batman. Hell, before superheroes became a big thing amongst the everyday person, if you asked them to name some superheroes I'd guarantee you that they'd say "Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman". Maybe some would say the Hulk as well. Regardless, Wonder Woman has been in pop culture since Lynda Carter popularized her, and Superfriends cemented her status as "superhero that people know". NOW, I do think (like Aquaman) the everyday person couldn't tell you how powerful Wonder Woman really was until maybe the Justice League cartoons or the movie, but they knew she existed far longer than any other female comic hero. (Maybe Batgirl and Catwoman if she counts).
Lastly, I'd just like to add my two cents on children of legacy characters, or as I like to call them "OCs, Do Not Steal". There rarely is one that is good, and the ones that have lasted (like Damian) are basically just carbon copies off of other characters. I guess it's just more of what people like and for one reason or another people like them. I speak from personal experience here. I'm an artist with some what of a fanbase and I once made a joke OC daughter of Batman and Wonder Woman called Valor Girl... and put all the cringe tropes an OC like that would on her.... and my fanbase ate it up like I was serious. I even told them it was a joke, but they still loved her because they loved the idea of Batman and Wonder Woman getting together, I think. To this day people want me to do more with that character. So it's baffling to me. I guess tropes become tropes for a reason.

Just to name a few: Priest with his black boxes, Ellis talking about the church and/or group sex, and Ewing being Marvel's continuity janitor. But King's writing quirk seems to be making heroes out to be less heroic. This worked for his time on Vision, but Strange Adventure felt insulting and I think we all know what happened with Wally in Heroes in Crisis. The quotes make it seem like he's trying to move away from this style, but I'm not ready to let my guard down yet.

But then with established superheroes like in Heroes in Crisis it feels like well loved superheroes are misunderstood or misrepresented for the sake of a grittier narrative, and that's just a kick in the teeth. I thought Supergirl found a nice middle ground, though!

It's like he wants to tell an original story, but he has to work with pre-existing well-defined characters, so he warps them to serve the purpose of his tale.

I like the idea of Wonder Woman being a mom, I do. She had a "cool aunt" vibe with Cassie. Diana and Donna didn't really interact all that much on panel, with Donna mostly being a Teen Titans character and not often being Wonder Woman's actual sidekick. So this girl being someone who considers Wonder Woman "Mom" could be very interesting.
But the abrasive cocky attitude doesn't work well with Damien already there. Introducing her in a future story instead of the timeline of Wonder Woman taking her in might be pre-emptively dooming the character.

For Wonder Woman’s 800th issue, at least we get to see a dream sequence of Wonder Woman interacting with Donna Troy, Cassie Sandsmark (in her early 2000s Young Justice suit), Artemis, Yara Flor, Clark Kent Superman, and Bruce Wayne Batman. I hope that Tom King’s Wonder Woman run will improve over the Cloonrad run and that it will involve her interacting with her entire family in person all the time (like the Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, and Green Arrow Families).
Also, in my opinion, this issue should’ve had more writers (i.e. Bill Messner-Loebs, Phil Jimenez, Greg Rucka, Gail Simone, etc.) focusing on all Wonder Woman history and characters just like Flash’s 800th issue.
Also, for the Tom King part, it would make sense for Lizzie Prince Trinity to be taken care of by the entire Wonder Woman family instead of Jon Kent Superman and Damian Wayne Batman (whom they would treat her as a little cousin/sister).

I like her design and the idea of a new DC trinity...but every word that comes out of her mouth beats you over the head with how out of place she feels. It's like the authors tried so hard to make her feel established in the universe that it did the opposite and makes her stick out like a sore thumb. Damien and Jon have years of comics setting up their characters and their dynamic, and it feels like this is trying to do that in one issue for Trinity. What could be considered endearing from established characters is grating coming from someone we just met.
I hope the author tones it down with her and lets her be a person. Living up to Diana is next to impossible, both for the readers and for Trinity as a person. She looks like a young Wonder Woman, the three lassos is interesting, the outfit looks great, but….. ugh, that dialog is very grating. Reminds me a bit of Damien in the beginning, but without people telling her she’s being an a-hole (and without the “I was raised as the prince of assassins” excuse that he had). I don’t get why writers do this to new characters. Characters can be confident, competent, and even a bit sassy without just putting everyone else down. When you introduce a new character and he/she starts off by talking down to characters the audience knows and (mostly) likes… it’s not endearing and can give a negative first impression that’s hard to overcome.

I agree, I don't like the way she talks to Jon and Damian. One thing is a little sass but, to me, she comes too strong in a bad way, especially this being the first time we see her. For a first impression I was not impressed, and I she was a person that I meet this way, even if she's not talking to me like that, I wouldn't want to be her friend or would be hesitant to engage with her the next time.
I think that the line "between family there's no favors, just obligations" should have been said by one of the other two to show their willingness to help her even when they don't know what it is that they are going to do.

If they're gonna make them just like their predecessors but not as good, it's gonna be a pointless waste of time. They need to make them kind of similar (clearly influenced and related to their parents as anyone would be) but give them their own personalities and their own flaws that they deal with and need to overcome. Just like real people, make them a result of the genes of each of their parents combined with their upbringings and what they went through while growing up.
Damien didn't watch his parents get shot in an alley, he can't be like Batman, but that doesn't explain his obsession with big collars. Trinity looks like she's more egotistical and haughty than WW, for whatever reason... but looks like that doesn't serve to be anything other than annoying and makes her character unlikable.
I often feel like comic books and their related material has just become an exercise in putting out new content for the sake of... jobs. It's just a job to a lot of people in the industry now. Its not driven by passion and creativity. Maybe too much effort to make something timely all the time rather than timeless.
But yeah... she and the writing for her isn't helping the new trope that female characters are being intentionally written as mean and snarky these days. It seems like an attempt at humor, but its really not what most people would find funny.

I think the idea behind trinity is that she is egotistical and haughty entirely because she is 'chosen'. she has the lasso's of fate, and all the theoretical power of wonder woman and all this power, but she lacks the actual wisdom and responsibility for it. she is starting out haughty and arrogant because likely she is being set up for a very big fall in her future. like perhaps her efforts to speedrun her own prophesy of greatness backfire horribly. why she brought them there was so that she could fulfill the things she needs to do quickly without actually burning herself out. because the idea behind the trials is clear, there is a lesson she is supposed to learn, but she instead is rushing ahead, conscripting others to help take the blow while she can quickly press forward toward her destiny. however, these things are going to bite her in the ass. because ultimately she is not actually ready. she does have the skill, the honor, or the ability to handle the pain she would need for her destiny, but her desire to quickly skip to the part where she has the thing she is after leads to her getting thoroughly dismantled, and making things worse.

The "annoying younger sibling" archetype is a hard one to get right. It almost feels like there was a writing/art mismatch. Trinity's dialogue might be endearing if she was meant to be very young, say 13 or even younger. As it is she just seems immature, especially when she uses cutesy words like "bestest" or "super duper".
Honestly, as much as I enjoyed the Cloonan/Conrad run (Siggy my beloved), I was always planning to drop out after issue 800. Wonder Woman is kind of a hit-or-miss character for me, and Tom King's writing isn't my thing.
P.S. The real DC Trinity is the one from the Ram V Swamp Thing run. She's the elemental embodiment of the radioactive glass formed during the Trinity nuclear bomb test in New Mexico and she's great.

As someone who replied to your community post saying “which one is the Brazilian Wonder Woman” thank you for the acknowledgment 😂

Damn, she looks impressively identical to Artemis, except for her lean musculature. Surely Jason Todd would be interested in "collaborating" with her 😉

Tbh, I think DC should focus more on building upon previous WW characters rather than bringing in new ones.
The reason a lot of Wonder Woman characters don’t stick isn’t because they’re bad or anything it’s because they’re not consistent. Every time there’s a new writer they always try to leave their mark on WW’s brand by reinventing her characters, their backstories, their designs, or bringing in new ones while not focusing on old ones.
For example, Cheetah is mainly WW’s main villain only because she’s the one who people can recognize the most-and that’s because she consistently shows up and her design doesn’t change that much. A lot of people don’t know WW’s other villains because they either don’t show up enough or when they do the artists change how they look like so no design can stick around long enough for people to become familiar with it.
