As another veteran, Dan is on point. I do think part of the problem is how we are raising our children. I grew up with guns in the house and we were taught how to handle guns from the day we were old enough to understand that.
Spend more time with your kids, put them in clubs or activities that provide socialization and a sense of discipline, give them responsibilities. Being present as a parent shows a huge positive outcome in children across every metric as long as you arent a controlling/helicopter parent. Club activities like sports, scouts, band/orchestra, etc. Allow children to socialize and feel like part of a community. It also allows them to see the value in improvement and discipline. And we see in prisons, social programs, and rehab programs that providing a sense of responsibility does a lot of good for people trying to change or improve their situation. It makes people feel like they have a stake in something and therefore what they do matters. It wont stop every crime, but 65% of ALL criminals come from fatherless homes - as well as 75% of ALL juvies. Feeling neglected or powerless, having self control issues, not being able to empathize with others and lack of care for the self are consistent with drug abuse, murderers, rapists, etc.
It's actually service weapons. In Switzerland every able bodied male has mandatory military service. After their service is over they take home their military gear including their weapons. On top of that Switzerland has stashed military equipment and gun stashes all around the country. The country is surrounded by mountains on all sides and the entire population is armed to the teeth and trained in warfare so even if a superior force would invade Switzerland they would have to commit to a never ending guerilla mountain warfare. Lots of armies in history failed in Switzerland and it is how the country can afford to remain neutral in every major conflict. Hitler and Mussolini took 1 look at that place and went ''nope'' and rolled on to France and Serbia (Serbia was also not a walk in the park btw).
when government issues the weapons, that makes it regular military by DFF. in the context of the 2nd amendment, "well regulated" simply means "properly functioning and trained." The preparatory clause of the 2A merely identifies the main reason the people have the right to keep and bear arms. Curious that this view of the 2nd amendment existed continuously from the BOR's ratification until 1934, then the federal government magically discovered it had the power to enact and enforce acts like NFA. Think about it this way. If the governors, or even the president, invoked their constitutional authority to "call forth the militia," if we aren't armed with our own weapons and other gear, what would even be the point of calling forth the militia? If the governors/president were to say "show up at X military base near your house to get your arms and equipment," now we're talking about conscription which, again, would be regular military.

Look at countries like Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Guns shouldn’t be banned, but there should be systems in place to make sure law abiding citizens can access weapons and those who are dangerous don’t. Broader gun crime and crime in general needs to be looked at completely differently. Drugs and poverty are the issues that need to be addressed. Drugs should be decriminalised, really they should all be legalised and regulated. The pharmaceutical industries in this country and poverty are the main causes of the opioid epidemic and the problems with drug overuse. You look at every other country, it’s much more difficult to access these kind of drugs. There isn’t a 1 stop fix for any of these issues, whether it’s banning guns, arming teachers or whatever. Can vouch as a U.K citizen that the crims around here are incredibly brazen. Didn't used to be this bad. Having a police presence is the main issue, in that if you called the police they'd be on site pretty quickly, now you might not see them for 2 weeks if you call them. Even phoned them when a drunk guy tried to break in through the front door to attack a member of the family and they only turned up when we threatened to seriously injure the attacker. We've been broken into at 3am (chased them off) but in 1 week our street had about a dozen break ins where they try to get in when people are at home. Interesting pointer though, you can own some guns in the U.K, and that can make you a target (albeit they try break in when ur not at home) as gangs want to steal hardware to use on other gangs.
My only issue with the argument about “hammers and knives” is that the target of all this is mass violence, not homicides. The goal is to reduce school shootings or acts exceedingly similar, and those are not perpetrated with hammers and knives.
They aren't perpetrated by GUNS either. They're perpetrated by sick, demented, angry and violent PEOPLE WITH A GUN. Michael Hall Yeah because court houses have criminals and high ranking government officials going in and out of them on a daily basis. Schools have neither
Ways to reduce gun violence in America: 1.Better support network and identification of mental health problems in school and wider society. 2.Ban dangerous medication. 3.Allow teachers to concealed carry with extra training. This also means there doesn't need to be a police presence in schools reducing strain on the police. The police could run the courses on what to do in a shooting, basic gun safety, how to store your gun, when to shooting, identifying threats etc. This training could also be done by private run government approved courses with teachers who wish to go on them being given a grant to do so. 4.Ban any sale of guns by anyone except registered dealers. 5.Universal background checks. 6.A requirement to get a 'gun license' before being able to purchase a gun. This 'gun license' would be similar to a drivers license. It would consist of basic gun safety, psych evaluation, eye test etc. It would have to be renewed every 5-10 years with a shortened evaluation after your first test. The evaluation would be maybe a previously mentioned background check, extensive psychological evaluation, eye test, gun safety class then followed by a gun safety test. The first evaluation may be over a week but when it is renewed further it would be able to be done in an evening with a quick 2-3 minute NCIS background check, 15-20 minute psych evaluation, short eye test, an hour to hour and a half gun safety refresher course and then a 30 minute to hour long gun safety test which would take no more than 3 hours. If you work say 9-5 it could be done in an evening, say 7-10pm? 6.Guns would be recorded in a database and it would be illegal to not have it recorded. It would also be illegal to have a gun recorded but then not have the gun in your possession (as in it would be illegal if you did not have the gun at home, work or on you as it would imply that you loaned out the gun without telling the police which would be illegal, gave it away without telling the police which would be illegal or sold it without telling the police which would be illegal).

It's interesting how the conversations about mass shootings and crime rate/drug crimes/etc. differ for conservatives. While the answer to the latter is usually more police, harsher punishments, etc. - trying to treat the symptoms with more of what already didn't work - when there's mass shootings it's suddenly worth it to look at the root cause and try to work it out instead of taking the easy route and just banning guns and infringing on the rights of law abiding citizens. Don't get me wrong: It's a noble thought. I just wish the same way of thinking would be applied to issues where the majority of voters for conservatives wouldn't be affected. E.g. poverty, crime, drug use, etc.
The root causes of those are lack of role models to teach kids how to behave, lack of moral education, broken homes, peer pressure, bad cultural entertainment products, and bad schools. The solution from a government perspective is to encourage parents to stay together and improve the education system. That means that instead of paying people to be unemployed single-parents and cutting off support otherwise, welfare should be designed so that being married and getting a job will improve your overall situation. As far as education is concerned, the solution is school choice through some kind of voucher system so that schools will compete over who gives the best value for the money instead of having a captive audience and being held hostage by the teachers unions.
I'm glad I'm not the only who heard that and thought it was absolutely ridiculous. He should have told the victims of all these shootings that it would have been easy to stop if they just bum rushed the guy trying to kill them.
He's not wrong it is easy to take away a rifle and also a person holding a pistol fully extended from the body. But he misses the point that unless you had the training like those of us who had been in the military or police where you are surrounded by gunfire constantly during training that when the average person hears rapid firing, that there is no fight mentality for most people involved it's either flight or freeze. Loud noises trigger us and that's not something the average person can handle. If we aren't going to do anything about gun control I believe we need to set something up for young adults to get actual weapons training. Getting people more familiar with weapons will help immensely with the mass shooting problem we have.
When I was a kid, growing up in Stockton, CA, in 1989, there was a school shooting at Cleveland Elementary school where a man who was a former student returned to the school with an AK-47, killing and wounding dozens of kids and staff before turning the gun on himself. It did made national news at the time, but no one ever talks about this incident anymore, maybe because it led to the 1994 assault weapons ban. The same assault weapons ban was in place at the time of Columbine and failed to prevent it. Eerily, I did a quick Wikipedia search out of curiosity and found that there was a prior school shooting at a Cleveland elementary school in San Diego in 1979 that was carried out by a 16 year old girl. I’d never heard of that incident until today. This is nothing new, but I think that sensationalization leads to increased incidence of copy-cats. Also, terrorists don’t need guns to commit acts of terror so banning them will not solve this problem.
For those curious, I did some brief research into this. Please correct if I’m wrong. Some of Switzerland Gun laws/rules: • All able-bodied people must serve a minimum of 245 days in the Swiss Military Service. I believe you can break that up and don’t have to knock it all out in one year. • There’s free-acquisition for semi-automatic weapons, but not fully automatic. • Open carry is not very common, and it requires a special permit that’s given sparingly. • Rifles and handguns with magazines over 10 - 20 rounds require a special license. • No gun if you have a violent criminal record and consecutive convictions. • Must be over 18 to buy a gun. • Police must have documentation on your guns • Guns can be passed down under a contract that is then shared with the police. • Background checks take two weeks, and if there must be no suspicion that one will harm themselves or others (mass buying). • A Lot of restrictions of types of ammunition. A shallow rundown, but wanted to put that info our there.
Tell me how that’s that much different from here.We have to have a special license to have fully automatic, you can’t buy a gun if you’re under 18.The only swiffer eve really is that you’re ex military, and that all weapons are properly documented.Good luck with that on the 400+ million of them that we have.Go ask MS-13,the crips, bloods, and all in between to get their act together per the law.The rest of us have them because of these types of people. All of mine are registered, are theirs? Most of all,can you get them to?Sometimes all that shields you and you family from these types is the knowledge that you’ll do more than they will to protect what is yours.I’m sure that if you take 100% of the guns away from the bad guys the majority of the rest of us will turn ours over as well.We all know that will never happen.

@UCg6tJObP98HVv0T-WsDuzTw Sort of. It's the 21 foot rule and generally it's holstered gun vs. charging with a knife. Even a quick draw against someone with a knife is likely to be too slow to completely prevent being stabbed. However, most trained shooters understand the value of angles and height. What the gunman can do to buy time for the draw is to drop to the ground or jump/roll out of the way. There are a few ways to counter this with different knives but generally they all require a good amount of practice. No one needs much practice to fall on their butt/back and draw a gun. Also, he is right, any long barreled firearm is fairly simple to control. The fact that you need 1 to 2 less steps to be in range of a rifle vs a handgun is a huge benefit. There are plenty of ways to do it but the easiest I know is to push the barrel in towards the gunmans stabilizing arm and come in with your elbow around the outside. Get essentially your full body on the gun and just pull away. By pushing in and coming in with the elbow, you break the grip enough to where you don't have to do much to take possession.
Grab the barrel? Try grabbing that barrel after a few rounds. It’s pretty darn hot. So unless you’re carrying gloves with you everywhere....you’re way better off making yourself an unappealing target. Probably with A firearm.

My take on shootings in schools. Definitely people who target schools are mentally ill, and I don’t know the correct percentage but I can imagine a lot of shootings are caused by people that have a mental illness. I feel like it all begins with school. School is insanely stressful, I’ve seen first hand what school stress does to a student. People think teenagers and kids that are in high school or older are super strong and can withstand so many things because their “younger”. There are truths to that, being younger you are physically healthier and stronger. But at the same time their just children. Their trying to learn what they want to do after school, while trying to learn along with so many other things. Students go through a lot and it may not seem much because the parents are working 9-5 every day, but a student is in school for 8-9 hours, inside a building with a bunch of other kids that they don’t like while trying to manage so many other things, it’s very stressful. And that can weigh onto a kids mind so much. To add on, I think a solution is to have annual therapy or have better school systems. Meaning try hiring and monitor teachers behavior. Try activities more often, make each student feel safe (without armed guards), make them want to come to school. Help ease their minds with the homework and the shit grading system.
Check out the stats for how many are hurt, maimed or killed in the UK during a robbery compared to the US. These ‘stats’ are absurd. We have single figure gun deaths. Why don’t people just admit they like guns and don’t feel responsible for the actions or safety of others?
My issues with having safety officers at schools is lack of training. My nephew, who is diagnosed with ODD, was given steroids in kindergarten -which led to roid rages when he reached puberty- and is a rapidly cycling bi-polar. Twice, he was nearly subdued into unconsciousness because he had a 'roid' rage episode and the safety officer didn't know how to deal with my nephew effectively. I've seen video clips of safety officers body slamming students because that is the only way they are trained to deal with kids. I reported a safety officer to my local police chief because he threatened my autistic child, while having a slight meltdown because he was overstimulated, and the regular teacher wasn't at school that day. I witnessed him threaten to put my son in a choke hold. He didn't know I was the parent.
That's horrifying. I agree with you. If we are going to have armed security around the most vulnerable, then they need to have proper training. I'd argue that even today the non armed security at schools need proper training. People just dont want to give money to the police and security because of the problems that arise from not having enough money for proper training.

Id also love to hear a valid argument against making a NEW and REFORMED red flag law (not anything like the currently unjust ones) that DOES rely on DUE PROCESS. We treat rape allegations seriously and investigate every single one. But whenever someone has an allegation that may involve gun ownership all the sudden we through our LE system out the window and just say 'no he has the right to own it. ' And if your only argument is that the current red flag laws are unconstitutional then you better not be arguing for reform to any other law in history. Denying that changing bad laws into good laws is ignorant because the same people that say this chant for immigration law changes.

The reason why the problem is close to "unsolvable," is because of how intangible the source of the problem is; you're dealing with despair, malevolent ideas, people who are depressed...Things that every single human being is capable of experiencing.
NO, it's intangible because the GOP, paid by the NRA, enacted legislation barring the federal government from studying gun violence and amassing the statistics to do so. They did this years ago and it has set us back decades on collecting the data and analyzing it so we can fashion an appropriate solution.
Personally i think this shit would die down with mandated service and full investment in space travel advancement. Hear me out. These shooters are either driven to attack by radicalization, despair, or jealousy. These all have the same source. No sense of belonging and a lack of purpose. Give these guys a mission that pushes them, that makes them value their own existence and feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves, and this shit will disappear.

Biggest failure is the loss of community policing, we never needed the police we dealt with issues locally, mass immigration without allowing time to integrate, too many cultures that contrast without education to pull them together, give kids more fun things to do and allow parents the ability to parent without the state looking over your shoulder, sadly the 80s are gone and the new world is unfixable 😢
Handguns accounted for 6,368 homicides in 2019. Other firearms accounted for 2,963 cases in that year. When combined, murders with guns account for 73.6 percent of the 13,927 total homicide victims recorded by the FBI in 2019. So “hammers and knives” are nowhere close
I live in Switzerland and all males have an Assault Rifle at home. We still have mandatory military service and need to go 4 weeks to military per year after a 150 day basic training. We need to keep the AR at home and have to go ti the shooting range once per year. The thing is you cannot just buy AR ammo in a local store. And if you steal ammo in military you are in a lot of trouble.
@Dave Richardson I actually live in Switzerland. I'd bet that if you took a random 95% white area in the US with a few million people - say somewhere in New Hampshire, Vermont, Iowa, Idaho, etc. you'd find very little difference to the Swiss culture.
In high school, there were always 2 cops school on premise, and even then we'd still have guns in school and at least 1 shooting (usually outside of the building) in the school year. As another veteran, Dan is on point. I do think part of the problem is how we are raising our children. I grew up with guns in the house and we were taught how to handle guns from the day we were old enough to understand that.
It's also regional. Bubba in Kentucky thinks nothing of buying his kid Cletus a .22 for his 7th birthday to run around shooting squirrels and cats.
what do you propose to fix this?
Loony people grow up in gun and non-gun homes. You canNOT predict crazy.

"Government weapons issued to people." Sounds like a militia, maybe even a "well regulated" one.
@@smokedbrisket3033 Ya but that is not what the constitution says. Article 1 section 8 says congress defines the militia not a bunch of hillbillies with guns.

You have to look at the problems holistically and you see that there’s a broader societal and economic problem in America that corporations and corporate backed politicians just do not combat, since they benefit from the problems.

Can vouch as a U.K citizen that the crims around here are incredibly brazen. Didn't used to be this bad.

Fun Fact:
Dan Crenshaw Is listed as a “ young global leader “ under Klaus Schwabb ( Davos/ world economic forum)
Ways to reduce gun violence in America:
1.Better support network and identification of mental health problems in school and wider society.

E.g. poverty, crime, drug use, etc.
the root cause of most mass shootings is MK Ultra. Disband the CIA and the problem goes away.

Disingenuous dude.

It’s still better to have dangerous freedom than comfortable slavery.
For those curious, I did some brief research into this. Please correct if I’m wrong.
Some of Switzerland Gun laws/rules:
• All able-bodied people must serve a minimum of 245 days in the Swiss Military Service.
• Police must have documentation on your guns
• Guns can be passed down under a contract that is then shared with the police.
• Background checks take two weeks, and if there must be no suspicion that one will harm themselves or others (mass buying).
• A Lot of restrictions of types of ammunition.
A shallow rundown, but wanted to put that info our there.
The man is obviously full of shit. When he said, taking an AR is INCREDIBLY easy, I could take him serious anymore.

@@danilonden3782 sorry but you are full of shit, Dan is right on. It is far easier to take away and more importantly redirect the muzzle of an AR than a short-barreled weapon such as a handgun.

When someone tells me a sensible way to stop someone’s free and hate will without infringing on their rights, let’s have a talk.

People just dont want to give money to the police and security because of the problems that arise from not having enough money for proper training.
the armed guard in the florida school shooting ran away...so there's that.
I don't think all cops or armed security will be cowards like that Florida cop. They also put him in jail for not helping those kids.
@@skromee lol, sorry, but "i dont think they all wiill be cowards" "or they put him in jail" is not good enough when it comes to making sure our kids are safe. Armed guard aren't really a solution, in fact there's plenty of evidence that show they are just speed bumps to the final destination for cold blooded killers who dont care about dying.

@@jp-hs8hu you can laugh all you want but if you look at where these mass shootings take place they are always at gun free zones with no one to shoot back. If protecting our kids is important using tax money for armed security is worth it.
