    In an audience watching this years ago, Oakie’s entrance and backslap got the biggest laugh in the picture. Still one of the best scenes. Chaplin gives everything to him.

      It's more garbage and rubbish. Rubbish being an englishmen's favourite common phrase. Which is much funnier to describe the cold and empty hearts of a dictator as full of garbage and full of rubish than to simply call him a vulgar word.

    ahaha...the "lucky 7" insignia on "il duce's" hat and uniform. jack stole this scene..
    as a matter of history, hitler initially looked up to mussolini as a representation of dictatorship and then later reduced him to subservience..
    the rest is history.

      In reality in 1934 Italy was feared by Germans because Italy guarantee Austria's indipendence and threaten to intervene if Germany were going to violate it. Only after war in Ethiopia and Spain Mussolini allied formally with Germany.

      They got their ass kicked once they were exausted, won several battles in North Africa, Rommel said:

      Instead of using your propaganda knowledge you should check the condition in which the soldiers were fighting, no boots, weapons of WW1, no food, no water, you wouldn't endure a single day.
      Rommel knew the valour of the Italian soldiers.

    What ever could be the superlative of 'perfect casting' (by Chaplin) for this movie ???
