Regarding pianos, the MODX8 doesn't trigger the sample velocity layers properly in the mid to low end, because of the GHS graduated keybed; however the CFX still sounded fairly decent compared to the Roland Fantom's piano. They are two completely different type of pianos. The Yamaha has perfected the CFX grand sound and Roland's in this video sounds more like a Steinway or some other type of piano, so not completely apples to apples, but more of a personal taste thing. At the same time, the quality of the piano and other sounds on the MODX are equally as good as anything on the Roland, so as far as just 'sounds' go, the MODX is way better bang for your buck. Basically, this is comparing two keyboards, whereby one is less than half the price of the other, yet as far as sounds go, the MODX is right on par! The Fantom would definitely have a far better keybed and a few features that the MODX doesn't; however considering the price difference, and seeing that the MODX can soon do pattern sequencing in the October OS 2.0 release, as well as having an FM-X engine (as compared to Roland's other engine), the MODX functionally stands up farely well and can do mostly what the Fantom can do. Each have their strength's on things they can or cannot do, as the Fantom has certain functionality that the MODX doesn't, and MODX has functionality that the Roland can not currently reproduce such as, Extended LFO and the number of quality effects onboard & usable. So it comes down to what you are using it for and how much you are willing to spend for the value. If you need a flagship synth with a high quality construction and an awesome quality keybed, and you are willing to pay the extra, then the Fantom would be the right choice. If you are more interested in the sounds it can produce, as well as fucntionality, and the price is a factor, then it is a no-brainer, as the MODX would be the right fit! This should have been a comparison between the Fantom8 and the Montage8, as that is more apples to apples. This is where personal preference comes more into play, because the Montage8 is right up there with the Fantom8. Just depends on what type of apple you think tastes better for you. I would be hard pressed to make a decision between the two, except that Piano is my #1 most important criteria and the CFX grand on the Montage sounds/plays better to me than the piano on the Fantom. Also, I came from a DX7II world and all my best FM-X sounds complement all the other sounds on the Montage AWM2 engine, not to mention that there are more OS updates with even more features coming on the Montage in the not too distant future (Yamaha reps have confirmed this several times, even since the OS 3.0 release), so it is quite likely that the Montage & MODX with receive a VA engine and many other features/enhancements in the future...this is all on Yamaha's roadmap! But still, if I had the money, I would have both the Montage and the Fantom! ;)
This is great 👍🏾 Thanks!! I hate that lfo movement on the Montage. The pianos did not sound like they were configured exactly the same, just similar presets.
I own both, in person the Fantom sounds better, but the huge difference is in the feel. The MODX continues to get the job done though, great light weight board for gigging.

I starting liking more Fantom than a Montage they are many big reasons....... Just waiting for the firmware updates....

Isn't that a $2000 difference I think you should use the montage By the way what when do you think they're going to release their Half price phantom there is there answer to modx
I don't think that a half priced Fantom is a good idea. It costs to be the boss! lol They did that with the lousy FA thing...poor quality. You don't see Korg releasing a lower priced Kronos...(and don't say Krome because it is Not-The-Same engine). But if you need a keyboard workstation...you gotta drop the $dough$ to get a REAL WORK OF ART like the FANTOM. It's ALMOST like having an MPC in a keyboard...you can't chop samples on the Montage. The Montage is a synth with a sequencer not workstation. In its defense it was never meant to be a standalone workstation...the new sequencer was added to please a fan base that refuses to embrace change. If I were Yamaha I would just start producing a new line of Motifs that are real workstations. The Montage is a marvelous synth and should be accepted as such. I think the Jupiter X will be more my style with most of functionality controllable on the surface.
piano MOXLEY So the Kross is a cool board, no question. However, taking all parts of the Kronos into consideration, the Kross can not be held up-to it in comparison, in my opinion. At least not in the same way we can compare the MODX to the Montage, because they share the same engine and the differences are mainly in the hardware configuration. Which (MODX) still provides a level of quality, that the FA fell short of. I can back off of the staunchness of my assertion however, and say that if Roland decides to make a smaller workstation I hope they keep the hardware up to spec, with regard to robustness. I understand that it can’t be the same as the Fantom but it should not feel like a toy. I guess my disappointment in Roland regarding the FA gets the best of me. I don’t know when they will create a newer version of it but I suspect they will, and I hope the quality is inline with their recent releases.

@@2ammusik No! I know exactly what a fair comparison should be if there would be a total comparison between all functions. In that case a comparison between the Fantom and Montage would be the right one. In this video ONLY one single piano patch is compared and let me say it again: the piano sample (CFX) and the piano patch (called Performance) are THE SAME on the Montage and MoDX. Could some of you be a littlebit more realistic, please? Most people are listening and watching in this case to a compressed video/audio and even the outputs and conversion differences between the Montage and Modx - if there are any at all - don't play any significant rule in this video. Not to mention that a lot of people listen and watch this on their laptop and amps which are not high class studio monitors. The poster made a point: the sound difference is minimal and comes down to which one you personally like more.
MODX @ £1200.00 holding it's own against the £3000.00 Fantom, keybeds incomparable as the Fantom 7 will be more responsive than 88 weighted on MODX... could buy more gear with the £1800.00 saving.
If you don't think Roland is by far the best you have to train your ears and listen better. Listen to live piano, epiano and orchestras at a theater. Or at least good quality digital recordings. And pay attention to all sound details. Then come back.
They already have the Krome. When they update the hardware to the Kronos I would expect a Krome update..the thing it may take a while.. if we dont see a hardware update by Namm of 2020 it may be next fall or 2021 before we see a true response to the Fantom 2019..
So you are "comparing" Roland's top of the line synth - against Yamaha's second tier synth? And the Yamaha is holding it's own and even beating the Roland in several places.

@@digitaldiezel5870 thank you very much I did not research thoroughly I trust your input video was excellent I'm falling way behind on the information and technology thank you for the video
Comparison between MODX and Fantom? Would be MODX and FA or MONTAGE x Fantom. Sounds more honest.
Hey, it's a piano comparison. The MoDX shares absolutely the same piano as the Montage.
petara45 The sound outputs are different. The MODX are lean compared to MONTAGE
@@renatoladislau6755 Oh come on, this is so subjective, it is definitely not worth discussing. Especially considering it is a compressed youtube file.
petara45 I think it’s worth mentioning. Montage and Fantom are what the comparison should be. I guess you think that if he compared it to a toy keyboard, you would see no issues with that either.
Gzdzie sie palce lepiej kleiły?
Jestem z Rolandem cale życie ,ale z sustainem chyba lepiej odseparowane dźwieki z Yamaha jeśli chodzi o piano a Yamaha FUTURE sound!
MODX @ £1200.00 holding it's own against the £3000.00 Fantom, keybeds incomparable as the Fantom 7 will be more responsive than 88 weighted on MODX... could buy more gear with the £1800.00 saving.
They both sound great, sounds like the Yamaha is voiced darker, sounds more vintage. The Roland sounds modern.
I have a weird feeling that Modx piano sounds better but the Fantom piano sounds so emotional. Modx not so.
the fantom has proper velocity curves. you have to program the modx keys. they are meant for ready made singer song writing.
No cóż, oba brzmią świetnie, ale jednak chyba w fortepianach Yamaha lepiej.
Seems like modx will sound better in a mix for piano. All the other sounds fantom sounded noticeably better to me.
same
The yamaha is thicker acoustic.... Fantom modern very god
Fantom king😎
thanks ! yamaha are more bright, with less mediums ! at your choice
I love roland very
If you don't think Roland is by far the best you have to train your ears and listen better. Listen to live piano, epiano and orchestras at a theater. Or at least good quality digital recordings. And pay attention to all sound details. Then come back.
Yamaha piano too much reverb, lack of string vibration layer.
To be unbiased, he should have not mentioned or shown which one he was playing and let people just hear. That would give unbiased opinions.
The montage has the same engine sound engine I agree
Same sound set but the montage has bigger waveform than modx.Montage more fuller than modx
Roland fan
Roland has got their piano sound on point. However Yamaha is also fkn awesome. Just want to put it out there, Korg is still far behind in the game.
Roland!!
Yamaha wins this one. The Roland is too heavy in the mids. While Yamaha has a flat frequency response.
Very possibile that Roland has got better DA converters than MODX and will be better cutting through the mix in live situations
Roland Wins!
Roland Winner!
Yamaha modx is better in sound and features
Gosto MT de Roland mas o piano do Yamaha achei mais pesado
Mas no restante o Roland levou!
Disagree
What is KORGS Answer going TO BE TO THE MODX Price range for people who don't have a pool Musicians who don't have dollars $4000
They already have the Krome. When they update the hardware to the Kronos I would expect a Krome update..the thing it may take a while.. if we dont see a hardware update by Namm of 2020 it may be next fall or 2021 before we see a true response to the Fantom 2019..
Roland is the winner
Roland...best!
Modx should not be compared to Fantom. It must be Montage vs Fantom and Modx vs FA, then MX vs Kross
Kross is korg, MX and juno ds supposedly.
So you are "comparing" Roland's top of the line synth - against Yamaha's second tier synth? And the Yamaha is holding it's own and even beating the Roland in several places.
MODX has the same samples as Montage which is more expensive :)
@@muzykujkropkacom Yes, they have the same samples - but the MODX has cheaper audio outputs and audio circuitry than the Montage. The MODX also has a much lower sampling frequency than the Montage.
@@muzykujkropkacom yes same sound set but the montage sound set has bigger rom memory than modx so its more fuller than modx
Roland win
They both said sound great but Roland is double the cost.... Geeezzzz, theres not that big of a difference in the sound.
@@williamocosby it is a matter of taste. some like nord 4 others korg kronos, others kurweil PC4 and I love roland fantom, it's a machine. in my opinion the roland on the win over yamaha montage
Modx win like always👍
@@LuisGaraySessionPiano I agree with you that it's a matter of taste and I also prefer the Roland overall. The point that I'm making is that the Roland isn't worth double the price of the Yamaha... at least in my opinion.
Why comnparing a Top level against a Mid level kayboard? Nonsense...
The Yamaha Montage sounds the same, I had a MODX so I decided to record this movie.
Roland wins
Acabou o monopólio da Yamaha.
1.000.000.000 Yamaha The Best.
Yamaha na frente
Modx souns warmer.
Sounds brighter, but may not be a good thing
in my country ROLAND FANTOM 7 - 4 880 USD , YAMAHA MODX7 - 1 630 USD . People what are you comparing?😂😂🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Here is R$11k... In the middle.
Here is R$11k... In the middle.
Roland is the best
There is no such thing as bad keyboard sounds anymore, bear in mind the modx is over half the price though!
Paul Hale Yeah, but the MODX has less features compared to the Fantom...they should’ve put it against the Montage
Roland is roland ......
Roland > Yamaha > Korg (for piano sound)
