I've lost count of how many times I've watched this. Shame he didn't cut it in the studio, as he pretty much kept this style every time he sang it. People talk about Sinatra being the king of phrasing, but Dean's his equal in my mind. Dean took a song like this that was usually sung in a soft slow manner, to a joyful hot piece.
+EyeShotFirst I would agree with you if Dean had put down a catalog like Sinatra's but he didn't. Dean was a supreme talent: golf, timing, comedy, acting, and singing..but he never took any of them very seriously. Sinatra took singing deadly serious he poured all of his talent into that and concentrated it. Dean cared about two things more than anything in his life: Golf and Solitude.
I think he's far and away better than Sinatra, Sinatra was great but Martin was astounding, sang songs in an expressive way few if any could match, but he is Italian..;)
Not saying that one is 'better' than the other, both are great, but I totally prefer Dean Martin too and I'm sure there are many of us who do :) Whenever there is a song they each did their own cover I find myself enjoying Martin's voice much more. To me he is the soft and sweet teddy bear of good old music
Every Thursday night, at my grandparents house, we'd watch Dean on their Admiral Color Console TV. What a tremendous time of my life. Give it up for Les Brown's band with the fabulous Jack Sperling on drums. Swingin' !!!!
These priceless Dean Martin numbers "sung from the couch" as seen on the Best of the Dean Martin Variety Show were absolutely wonderful!!! It was Dean at his most relaxed and very best - sometimes doing numbers that he had either never recorded before at all or done in quite some time over his career. Sadly - in certain DM video collections - these numbers were cut from the show to allow time for other guests etc. At least on all of the original individual volumes of the Best of...... the great "off the cuff" singing performances such as the famous one done here on this clip - were saved. Many thanks to Greg Garrison and everyone involved in those fabulous productions of the shows. Only wish there had been more of them released for all of us to enjoy. Only 28 of the Best of the Dean Martin Variety Show were released that I'm aware of. Find some if you can, even if used, to see this wonderful performer at his best once again. Like many have said - he had it all - an amazing voice - that few, if any - could imitate, the looks we'd all dream of having, perfect comic timing, a most memorable and very warm stage presence, a darn good actor (for those who have seen his films), and as Greg Garrison and others have said - the wonderful way he had of making guests on his shows feel so at ease and welcome around him, his staff, and other guests. Thanks so much for all the joy and happiness you gave us, Dean!!!! And - thanks so much, Dennis, for posting this very fabulous special clip of Dean doing one of his best and most memorable numbers!!!
For me he was the greatest. I am 72 years old and I heard the first song " memories are made from this " in Radio in 50's from that Moment I was a great fan.
DEan did this in the 1st year of his show------------age 48 y/o --------and still, a handsome guy, with that great voice. By 1970, the years of endlessly smoking Camels, began to catch up with Dean ; his handsome face & smooth voice, were disappearing. ----MJL,77 y/o
Love to hear sing Where or When. I still love him. Headed for the Last Roundup. Dean can sing anything and I would love it. He just had that kind of voice. And I still live him even though he has gone on.
It seems we stood and talked like this before We looked at each other in the same way then Can't remember where or when Oh, the clothes you're wearing They're the clothes you wore The smile you are smiling you were smiling then Can't remember where or when Some things that happened for the first time Seem to be happening again And so it seems we've met before Oh, laughed before, yeah loved before But who knows, oh, where or when Some things that happened for the first time Seem to be happening again And so it seems we've met before Yeah, laughed before, oh loved before But who knows where or when
Dino... had such exceptionally beautiful, quality tones timbre, dynamics✨🎆😎🏅 He was so completely in a league of his own ... he did not even have to try....🏆 Yet....for one, i do wish that he had tried giving a little more of himself in his music just a little more often...😔
I. Will. Repeat. It. Again. And. That. Is. Deano. Has. A. Big. Smile. When. He. Sung. And. Had. Fun. Hamming. It. Up. Singing. He. Was. So. Handsome. And. Seemed. Sweet
“And so it seems that we have met before, laughed before, love before, but who knows where or when?” I’m sure his friend Shirley MacLaine would have had some ideas about that!! (Dean once said in an interview that when Shirley would go on at him about what he would come back as, he told her “I’m gonna come back as a truck, find you and run you down! Get away from me with that crazy talk!”)
Deanna Martin tells a story about asking “Uncle Frank” about singing and he talked about expanding to take a full breath and control of it release and other techniques. She then asked if her father did all those things? Sinatra said “He doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing, he just does it”.
He always had a drink in his hand and I thought he was a drinker but years later I heard that it was just an act. And even if he did drink he wasn't a drunk
Terrific version of this wonderful song and he was probably the most handsome singer ever, but to say he was a greater singer than Sinatra is stretching it too far.
my opinion....Dean was the greatest of all of them
Absolutely!
The best pop singer of the three, but the least artistic of the three. He's the most one-dimensional, but not in a bad way.
Yeaaaaa

I was about to write the exact same post. You're damn right.
He’s better
Dean did the best version of Where or When ..... great tempo and a magic voice. Thanks Mr Martin.
As Dean once said;
'Oh, this kid sings so good he should sleep with his head in a safe!"
Every Thursday night, at my grandparents house, we'd watch Dean on their Admiral Color Console TV. What a tremendous time of my life. Give it up for Les Brown's band with the fabulous Jack Sperling on drums.

effortless ... he liked to sing, so he sang ... his pal Frank took voice lessons ...

Hello, is this song available on record?
👏👏👏👏💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💋💞💞
I like the way Dion and The Belmonts sing it
That's going on my desert island (you have to be British to understand that) with me.
The channel filled of advertisement of other videos. That's a bad idea, disturbing the video.
I love Dean Martin but I think Dion dimucci sang it the best

Terrific version of this wonderful song and he was probably the most handsome singer ever, but to say he was a greater singer than Sinatra is stretching it too far.
