*destroys opponents army easily*
"Instead get this"
*barely wins fight*
why did noone answer that comment ? :o
@@pietrx6893 I think his micro is just better.
"Anything that requires micro is pretty terrible" - a true warrior of Aiur right there. Respect.
This video is about compositions, but actually the most important thing I understood is how much the engage matters
amen brother
Harstem microing two armies and jokes better than I can micro any of them separately
well he put well over 50.000* hours into this game
@@bigsmoke4592but he hasn't..
@@kadiea8664 even if he would have exaggerated his practice efforts it's definitely in the tens of thousands
@@bigsmoke4592 likely at most 12k hours. Given some pros playing games for most of the day on counter strike for over 12 years are only at 30k and harstem hasn't been a pro for that long
@@kadiea8664he's been playing this game almost every single day for over 13 years and other blizzard rts before that
Two things:
1. What a sweet thing to do your girlfriend!
2. Can you do a video explaining your control groups/macro mechanics? I feel clumsy and a bit wasteful with some of my key presses and haven't been able to find any good guides on how pro's manage certain difficulties like:
- ensuring all units are in a control group, even shortly after being produced ( while avoiding using f2)
- quickly transferring workers to gas/between bases and actually selecting the correct number
- etc
To roughly summarize, a sort of meta detail on how you interact with your armies/bases and any nice tricks you've picked up along the way.
Thanks! Love your vids and great work.
just practice xD
My small contribution:
Control groups:
I have watched IndyStarcraft's guides about that (Polish languange), perhaps there is some other streamer with such guides.
What I learnt and successfully use as Protoss is:
1 is for main army/1st scouting probe.
2 is for support army
3 is for support army
4 is for production (early game gates, later only robo+stargate)
5 is for Nexuses
6 is for upgrades (my own deviation, usually ppl don't use any shortcuts for it).
Explanation. I have my main army in 1, 2 and 3 are for Oracles, small adept attacks and things like that. When I split my armies, then I do "alt 2" to control them nicely.
I keep Warp Prism in 3, with disruptors/HTs inside the Prism in the same control group (alt 3). Drop on Prism + spamming 3 number allows you to very quickly select dropped units and allow you to storm/do disruptor balls.
In PvT I keep half of my HTs, (or all the air to run away from vikings :D) in 2, and I keep it more behind my army (Prism on 3 with HT drops still actual) to avoid EMPs (I usually let them follow a collosus or something like that). So yes, 3 HT groups total. (sometimes disruptors are on 2, while being at the same time in 1, so that I can easily select them over HTs/Sentrys, cast a ball and move it to back of the army, then there are no HTs in 2).
All units added to control groups:
After you practice a bit with ctrl, alt, groups 1,2,3 then it feels easier to manage your groups (for example you instantly see changelings, because there are zealots where there shouldn't be). It's important to adjust your rally point to the situation. You start hearing a unit (turn ambient sound and music to lower settings) that was just built, so you know when to pick it. Look regurlarly to your rally point location.
Macro:
Camera locations. I set them for F1-F8. While 1st probe is being built, I go over every single mining location on my side of the map and adjust location for it.
You can press F1, F2, F3 to quickly go through your expansions. That allows you to easily and quickly adjust mining probes, specially after minerals are mined out.
Probes management:
Drag with mouse. With experience and practice accuracy will come. Shift left click on probes in the bottom window to adjust numbers as they suit you. You can afford to lose 5-15 minerals by asking a probe with already mined mineral to mine gas. Your APM and time is more important.
Select 6 probes, right click all of them on assimilator. Shift click 3 of them on bottom bar. Right click 2nd assimilator.
Probably a bit chaotic, I am sorry for that. Level Diamond 2 EU. (quite interesting fact, I implemented all of the above, improved micro/macro/strategies and engagements after getting to D2, and I am still here after all improvements ^^)
Have a nice day.
All I'll add to the other comments is this - try not to use anything after ctrl-6 because its too hard to reach. For control groups 7, 8, 9, and 0, use other keys. For example I use ctrl+Q for my forges. And I use tilde ( ~) for my warp prism / harass group. Also make sure you are using W for warp gates so you don't waste a hotkey on 1-6 for gateways (i'm always BAFFLED when I see people using a number hotkey for warp gates, wtf?). And USE RAPIDFIRE HOTKEYS! So you can warp in 20 zealots in less than 1 second. If you aren't familiar, look up a tutorial on youtube. It's insanely useful for all races.
@@dallarian8687 this is frankly super helpfull! thanx!

I can't believe that toss at the end kept misclicking on his own void rays and threw the fight! GG on that he's mad for sure
This reminds me of times when I was a little boy and I was toying with units in map editor of Age of Empires 2
I just love Harstem's laugh xD
That last example was great. Who would've thought that you would win because voidrays go insane and kill each other... What a twist! Still so many hidden mechanics in SC2
Real gamers remember the simple sentence: when behind go Dark Shrine
when you are ahead? Go dark shrine
Dark shrine baby. ( Unless ur me who does horrible dt rushed.
best unit comp is 200/200 voids change my mind
Hard to argue with that statement
200/200 Hydras would like to have a word with you :)
200/200 carrier beats this.
1 viper + 1 infestor beats that
200/200 libs would wreck you with only a couple losses
You forgot to talk about when Zerg add Viper, Brood Lord in their armies. And Infester I guess. Lower league probably have people massing Muta as well.
Also, mass Phoenix in pvp. Tho, that one is more about harass composition than fighting composition.
Very informative! It's always a treat when a pro decodes the game in the unit test zone! Thanks :-D
The lack of thermal lance upgrade is important... because all us metal leaguers forget that on occasion.
This video has more value, than most build order guides. Thank you Harstem.
man, what a blast of a video, absolutely love it
Love u Harstem. Such type of videos are the most helpful for us. I hear your voice reading this while writing it lol :)
This video helped me so much. I always tried to counter lurkers with either distruptors or switching to skytoss which failed a lot because by the time opponent pushed i would usually not have enough air fleet. Using HTs was the correct answer apparently. Thanks!!
thank you harstem i did not lose a single game in the past 5 days. its because i did not play any tho
Great video, exactly what I needed
Great video!
Great video thanks Captain!
This is nice, I have a good grasp on good unit comps, but not on less common examples, and specific ways to deal with enemy unit comps, like positioning, and number of units and type of units, thanks captain
Been there, he covered the reasonable army compositions but in the lower leagues we have to face mass viking, mass mines, mass raven and so on...
God, this is exactly what I needed!
This is the most intellectual thing I’ve seen all week 🧠
I was blind. And now I can see. Super useful video. I don't usually subscribe, but I do subscribe after this one.
love this guy
great video as always, the preparation made it this good, but there are a couple of things you didn't touch on, like Air compositions (in PvZ mostly, but can happen in PvP as well, less in PvT), static defense and enemy spellcaster: vipers, infestors, ghosts and ravens. but I guess for someone starting out it was enough.
A guide on Lategame Army compositions of this kind would be helpful too
Neeb goes flux veins voidray vs mass bc. it sounds weird but think about it: Terran yamatos and blinks out with their bcs, but bcs don't 1shot voids anymore. When you PA, the bcs will melt super fast so they can't stay to fight. When the bcs leave, the voids are actually fast enough to get across the map to attack before they can repair.
I can feel wiseness in these words...
Agree. Voidray is the answer
@@PashkaTLT the word is 'wisdom' yw :3
Great tute man :)
Honestly, this was a really useful video for unexperienced players like myself.
Harstem hour suggestion: slow-motion how to micro & exercises/drills to get better at micro?
7:55 passive aggressive roasts us
Came for starcraft stayed for that laugh :D
If you catch battlecruiser mass early, i find mass void rays work. when you spot the first few early battlecruisers, slap a gate or two, chrono that shit out. Before yamato and on even supply void rays win. After yamato not so much, but since they're fairly cheaper you'll still have decent trades, big beams go brr. And with chrono and maybe another gate you can definitely out produce them. You do also have to be on the ready with calls since cruiser can teleport and shit but it shoulnd't be a major problem, especially at the leagues where you get mass cruisers anyways
'Always flame your opponent.' Best advice in the video. I did this and my win rate went up by 12%
"Never in a million years going to be disruptors"
*Mcanning has entered the chat*
you are doing God's work harstem
+500 mmr
Good job Kevin
"I feel like I did a fantastic job covering zerg" Doesn't cover Broodlords, corruptors, vipers and infestors. Come on Kev...
You write gg and quit the game when you see first brood lords :P
carriers, tempest, archons, maybe even a couple voidrays, dont get storm tho, cause then the zerg will never win against protoss latgame
Airtoss is the answer
Yeah, Kev, what is this?
Harstem- can you please do a video on when to get upgrades and what to get first?
ooo, nice ^^
This is one of the best SC2 videos ever. Really great job Captain!
ur the best bro
good video
Very helpful video. Do you know guys, where i found similar video for Zerg?
Most educational harstem video there's ever been. I feel like there's room for a whole series here -- Adventures in the Unit Tester.
Fucking Gold Bro!!! Thank you SOOO much!!!!
thanks for this! I've been playing more 2v2, whats your suggested counter for each race to mass Skytoss? it seems if they can get to a maxed carrier/tempest/voidray army nothing stands up to it...
personally as zerg i mostly try corruptor/infesto(fungle and neurel)/viper(extra, i always add 2 for bomb/cloud against stalkers/archons) and some lings to hold ground. this is a fight you will have to do multiple times in order to wither the deathball down.
As terran BC and a couple ravens for seekers, you could also just use mass marine and it will probly work fine...
But in general, dont let toss max on air.
Usually when I play against terran bio, they also bring siege tanks and scans, any tips on how to beat that with protoss?
23:00 so accurate hahaha lmao
There were two comps I feel you skipped over: for zerg, ling-bane-muta composition; for terran, tank-marine-mine.
Otherwise great content, thank you
in zvp there isn't that much difference between ling bane muta and ling bane hydra, the main damage dealer and tanking units are ling bane, hydras adds a bit more dps, while muta are very bad in face to face fights. Also, normally, terran usually just have one factory while playing bio, since, 2 factories sginifcantly delays the timing of stim and combat shield. So the terran one is actually not a build. You can limit a terran to 3 or less bases, until their stim and combat sheild are finished.
Hi harstem, whats the right response to the PVP game where one side goes quick carriers
Me: looks like i can get out of plat!
my micro: HAHAHA you have no power here!
Wow this may help. Idk anything about protoss except a all in slow as fuck dark templar rush
How do you beat a terran that masses cyclones before you get blink or charge and they snipe all your units and bases? Or late game they just drive around and kill all your bases and run away from your army?
So when terran shows up at my base with bio tanks, has the range, dps and mobility advantage, what do?
Okay Harstem. I like how you covered zerg except for one thing.
How do you counter Swarm Hosts? And how do you craft and army when your Composition is Skytoss heavy?
Swarm hosts tend to be all about finding them when they are vulnerable, but archons + storm is also good, I think...
What game mode is this on starcraft 2 arcade? i'd like to do some testing
Very quick widowmine+tank, mass muta+ling or muta+roach
Hello dear Harstem, could you make a new video of Protoss army composition guide? The meta has changed a lot in these two years, and new armycomps show up. It would be great if you can put out a updated guide for us :)
Storms do not stack damage in the same location is that correct?
the ending lol
OML Bless you child
vs BC, you get up to how many Tempests?
What about skytoss? When should that be used?
Can you do the same thing but with the other 2 races?
The TCF immitation was quite funny.
Not grandmaster in 5 days
Unexpected cannibalism
what should I do vs skytoss (carriers, tempest) ?
"Ultimate Army Composition Video"

"FOR PROTOSS PLAYERS"
D:
No but for real, I play Zerg, but I really like the content you put out, and I'm sure this is super helpful for toss players
00:00 Zerg
12:15 Terran
I have my doubts about support units (terran)... I tried to beef up bio with a few ghosts and ravens (anti armor - anti shield) - but a) those builds are so gas heavy, that at best you get them on 5 bases and b) I could not really notice that all those spells actually had a great enough effect... comments, opinions? :) Think a fight 10-12 min into the game not much later..
I cannot find this map, can someone help :)
Harstem: Make zealots and archons!
Me dying in 5th minute: Nooooooooo...... Twilight Council haven't finished :(
Mr stem you didnt cover marine maurader tank with the raven support
Harstem will stalkers also do good against lurkers and ultras since they also do extra damage to armor units?
No
Do storm damage stack?
Reasons y he made this video?
1) to teach his gf
2) to teach us
3) to show he can play both armies as if its 2 players playing the game 😂
The ending was pretty funny to, damn I love this guy haha 😄
Thanks for the wink.
How to deal with late game zerg air comps that may or may not have Vipers, Infestors, Corruptor/Brood
I'm guessing hydra lurker goes by the same comp as roach/hydra/lurker? Always struggle vs hydra lurker, especially if they have overseers to snipe obs.
yeah lurkers are very hard, can help if u can get zealot runbys going, or pouncing on lurkers b4 they burrow, then moving back. If they keep sniping obs, u might need to build oracles for revelations. Also if you let the hydra lurker burrow between ur bases, ur already fucked.
Could you do a similar video for zerg and terran?
how do i use this map to train?
Do storms stack? In the clip he talks about storming the same location several times (e.g. lurkers) but how does that help if they don't?
pretty sure it doesnt
I'm pretty late, but it doesn't stack, but he knows that. I think what he means is when it runs out, if the enemy pops back in, you can storm the same location so they're always zoned out.
adept printer go brrrrrrrr
TLDR - Harstem explains composition matchups followed immediately by him proving himself wrong.
Hey harstem my problem is that i see too much of pro players gameplays and when i scout like a stalker push or they hit too early or too late with strange things same as terran thats my problem because low tier players dont hit tye pushes when they should only that in pvz you didnt talk abou the roach ravenger build and the terran mines. Well mines isnt much of a problem until there is one that you dont see and explode all your army, only that
You are my favourite protoss player and coach for protoss love your videos
How do you beat Tank bio?
why do i get the feeling the day before recording this video harstem and his gf had a fight and he could not finish his argument and today he finishes his argument with this video
jk cap, thanks for the vid
grand mster is 5 days?! i only have... oh wait... COMPETITION STARTS IN 6 DAYS!!!
Why are disruptors good against ghosts?
How to defend against nydus swarm host?
People who don't watch till the end for that wink just lose the entire knowledge.
Всё что получилось у Харстема показать, что тосс настолько имба, что вообще поебать какая у тебя композиция и контроль, ты разваливаешь ебучего нуба на зергах, потому что ты сверхрасса и выбрал правильно.
I try to build archons, but they just get stuck and die immediately to ghosts. I thought for sure flaming my opponent would get me higher ranked, but I'm still not GM, Harstem suggestions don't work! Everyone else but me is IMBA!
you did not mention casters units infestors, vipers, ghosts or ravens and broodlords
How does he switch between units so easily? I’m new and struggling with this.
Regarding PvP, but when i watch your matches, it's always pure blink stalkers into disruptors. I rarely see chargelot archon from you. Why is that , captain?!?
Cuz he can micro blink and disruptor balls, I think and most of us can't lol. I can't , but yeah, I think it's just better to have an A-move army than a micro-heavy cuz maybe you can actually make more use of that...
Agreed blink stalkers are micro intensive and so are disrupters...
