Adjusting tonearm balance and tracking force on a DUAL 1009 or 1019 turntable

  • This video shows the basic steps required to set up the tonearm on a DUAL 1000-series turntable. The steps are:
    1) Level the turntable platter using a spirit level and an old record
    2) If not already fitted, install the cartridge and stylus.
    3) Set the tracking force dial to zero
    4) Protect the stylus/record from accidental damage by using the stylus guard, if fitted.
    5) Insert the counterweight in the rear opening of the tonearm but do not tighten the counterweight clamp screw initially.
    6) Un-clip the tonearm from its rest and position the headshell between the rest and the record
    7) Move the counterweight on its shaft toward the headshell if the tonearm tube angles up toward the headshell (headshell too high/light), or away from the headshell if the tonearm tube angles down toward the headshell (headshell too low/heavy).
    8) When the tonearm tube is more or less parallel to the surface of the record, gently tighten the counterweight clamp screw.
    9) To finely balance the tonearm, rotate the counterweight clockwise (viewed from the rear of the turntable) to lower the headshell or counterclockwise to raise the headshell.
    10) When the headshell is close to being level, remove the stylus guard and, while making sure you have hold of the finger-lift on the side of the head-shell to stop accidentally dropping the stylus onto the record, position the stylus over the lead-in part of the record (the outer part of the groove).
    11) Gently release the finger lift and look to see whether the stylus is close to, but not touching, the record surface. Clearance of around 1/8 inch from the stylus to the record is usually about right, but this will vary with different cartridges. If you need the stylus to move slightly closer to the record, turn the counterweight clockwise just a touch - or counterclockwise if you need to raise the stylus slightly. Caution! Small movements of the counterweight cause big changes in stylus height, so check the stylus constantly and ALWAYS hold the stylus clear of the record (using the finger lift) when adjusting the counterweight!!!.
    12) When you are happy with the height of the stylus and see that the tonearm tube is parallel to the surface of the record, replace the tonearm back on its rest and lock it in place.
    13) Using the vertical rotary dial on the tonearm pivot assembly, reading from the front of the turntable, adjust until the desired tracking weight (in grams) appears behind the red indicator line. The correct weight will be determined by the make and model of cartridge you are using. For the Shure V15-II used in this video, I set weight to between 1.75 and 2 grams.
    14) Other than adjusting the lateral bias (if fitted, e.g. on the DUAL 1019, but not fitted on early 1009 models), you are ready to connect and enjoy your turntable!

Very helpful to see. I was not familiar with these turntables and a bit confused by extra dials on the tonearm. This cleared it up perfectly.

People do not give these tables enough credit for the precision they were designed with.

Thanks for this. It's very helpful. I am new to turntables and just purchased a vintage 601. I have no clue what I am doing, but look forward to getting into it!

Thanks, this will help me to setup my Dual 1019 Turntable tonearm. It’s good to see it being done.

Just going to be pedantic here. The 1010 and 1015 are a little different, so this is only for 1009 and 1019 turntables, but the principles obviously are the same :). The 1015 as a geared knob to adjust the wait, which in some ways is easier, but not as accurate.
Thanks for a really detailed video. Still useful 10 years later :)

Excellent instructions. Leveling these 1000 series Duals with a bubble level is not critical however because the tonearms are dynamically balanced(spring loaded) Visually it would be helpful though.

I realize it is kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to watch newly released tv shows online?

That spring mechanism for setting VTF is a great idea! Rather rare indeed! The Dual 1009 is a "sleeper" among vintage TT's! And it's capable of sounding quite fine, indeed! Probably best used with a low-compliance mc cartridge, like a Denon103.

Thank you for making this video! It's the most straight forward, clear and intuitive instructional that I can find! I have a 1019 and slowly learning more and more about it. I do have a question - can anyone tell me to do with the anti skate once these adjustments in the video are made? Anyone with 1019 experience able to help? Thanks!

The counterweight on the stem is screwed on backwards. The .1 gram silver markings should be toward the front.

You're right. Of course, it makes no difference to the principle or the sound! But thanks for pointing it out!

I put leveling feet on my plinth. It also provides a bit of needed isolation.

    Help!
My 1019 has slow sleep and I have lubed it. It all looks great and all works except the speed. I already tried to adjust the spindle height but I can’t anymore or else it hits the platter. Please help.

What a great video thanks for sharing. I have a 506 I e mailled another guy who had one almost like mine (a 505) & maybe you can help me the other guy has not replyed. My problem is after I balanced the tonearm when I go to put the styles pressure setting on the needle, The needle hits the lp even when the cueing lever is in the up position, I tryed to move the tonearm counterbalance back butI have no luck I even tryed to use one of those shure gages but on luck any help would be great thanks.

Nice demo...clear...I have a 1209 I have a tone arm issue that does not return to its resting space...and and a more serious problem I can't figure figure out...stylus skips or loops...and the to tone arm wants to pull away from the center...

    • @rbruce63
      @rbruce63 Před 7 lety

Refat Rabadi If the arm doesn't return then it's time for clean, lube and adjust. vinylengine.com has your service manual! As far as the arm moving away from the center it could mean, all things else being equal (like the leveled turntable) that the antiskating is negative. Put it in zero to start with. Good luck!

For the 10-series, should the anti-skate be set to the same as the VTF?

    • @stuartbee7569

Yes, according to manual , if the stylus spherical radius is 16u, then 1:1

hello - what if anything could make a 1009's mute switch mute in play position? - it seems that way on my 1009 - I get no music in play position
