  • A Better Sanctuary
    (Heb 9:1-10)
    I. The OT sanctuary was a copy (v. 1-5)
    A. It demonstrated how men were separated from God:
    a. By inferior vessels (v.1)
    b. By internal barriers (v. 2-5)
II. The OT sanctuary was closed (v. 6-7)
    A. Services and Sacrifices were continual. (v.6)
    B. Services and Sacrifices were constrained. (v.7)
    a. Only the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies and then only once a year.
III. The OT sanctuary was conditional (v. 8-10)
    A. The Levitical system teaches at least three truths regarding the sanctuary:
    a. It could not provide full access to God.
    b. It could not mature or purify the conscience.
    c. It was based on inferior instruments.
    Point to Ponder:
Everything regarding the Levitical worship system prefigured the Person and Work of Christ. What the Old Covenant could not do, make one right before a Holy God, Christ was able to accomplish as our once and for all sacrifice for sin on the cross. Forgiveness of one’s sins is available to anyone who, by faith, will receive it. “Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matt 11:28-29)
