Always bothered me as a kid that Thor had his entire sprite made but wasn't playable, the only thing I knew Thor from growing up was his appearance in the Hulk cartoon.
Many characters had entire sprites made with out being playable, being playable involved many many additional frames of characters being made , example moves and special attacks movement frames voice lines and excetetra
Only Arthur and Thor were eventually added to the franchise as full playable characters. Hopefully Devilotte and Jubilee will get the same treatment one day.

I'm guessing Capcom was giving X-Men characters a rest after having them star in Children of the Atom and X-Men vs. Street Fighter. Thank goodness for MVC2.

they only have the sprites doing a few frames of animation. to be a full character would need hundreds of not thousands more animations each being newly drawn. if they were 3d models it would be easier.
I am so grateful that they're actually releasing a collection of the Marvel vs. games since it's something I and hella others have wanted for a long, long time. I used to play these games virtually every day at this one arcade since I was a kid so the nostalgia feels alone are going to go crazy.
Unknown Soldier (Lost Worlds) , Michelle Heart & Colossus are setups for WRECKING players. Princess Devilotte,Storm & Lou are for the close range grab combos by Orange Hulk,Zangief & War Machine rush combos that end with "shoulder cannon"...
Hearing all those characters brings back teen memories of me playing Xmen in nearby arcarde in the pizza shop and my uncle finally getting it for me on PC a year or two later. The sound was design was excellent, iconic and memorable.
While the Marvel assists are mostly recycled assets, the Capcom ones are really fascinating with their choices. They really dug into the well for some of these.
The dumber thing about the arms is they already have arms that are pinless that don’t have the seam across the forearm. They just didn’t care enough to use the proper arms.
I would be cool if they make an update to MVC2 where you could cboose one of the MVC1 assists (of course not the ones of playable characters though) to replace one of the characters on your teams assist
it would have been fun if some of these that were original sprites got expanded into full characters for mvc2, jubilee probably the main one more than the rest i would've wanted and second probably would be devilotte. I think both of them had potential for pretty interesting move sets. Im glad Arthur and Thor at least got to be playable in mvc3 and infinite even though they were both really weak there
Devilotte would have been amazing. She would have been really wacky. She might have fit better in a DarkStalkers game with those two freaks helping her.

(Psylock, Colossus, Sentinel, and maybe Juggernaut) Sidebar: In recent years, I've come to learn that the shooting partners were good, too. (Michelle Heart, Saki, and Lou) Sidebar 2: The flame that blows fire when Lou shoots the arrows can hit the opponent as well if they're at point blank range for more hits and damage. Sidebar 3: For those you never knew this, you have to hold specific buttons to get certain assist partners. (For the Younger Millenials and Gen Z who never knew the ins and outs of this game)

MvC1 had so many characters who only appeared as assists in the MvC franchise. Imagine what they’d be like if they were playable in MvC2 or 3.
