Brian Clough In His Own Words

  • When Brian Clough died in the autumn of 2004 at the age of 69, the world of football mourned one of the greatest managers of all time. In this film, recorded as he received the Freedom of the City of Derby award in May 2003, Clough says being the manager of Derby was 'the best job I ever had'. Also included is an emotional final tour of the scene of many of his Derby triumphs, the now demolished Baseball Ground, plus extracts from a memorial service for the great man at Derby County's new home, Pride Park Stadium, in October 2004.

people always used to say he was arrogant. Listen to him speak and it is all "them", "us", "we". Not "I", except when he is ridiculing himself. Great orator. Amazing how genius's can leave school early.

I remember him, and he is a God to me. He most certainly was arrogant, but why is that seen as negative ? His achievements speak for him, and the statements and memories of his peers only add weight to this legendary man's humanity, decency and talent. Big deal, so he was arrogant, so what?

Thanks for posting. I was 19 when I joined up and couldn't go to every home game any more. Clough and Taylor used to arrive in the car park at Forest, just as I did after walking to the ground off of the Barton bus from Leicester. BC used to scan the crowd and only parents with children would approach him. He had an aura. I regret not having the nerve to try and speak to him. They were halcyon days.

His ability was getting the best out of every footballer he was exposed to, producing 2 great club sides in Derby and Forest-but his most endearing quality was his sense of humour and ability to make anyone he met, feel he was their friend if he liked them, ego aside he made the world he touched a better place- Cheers to you Brian!
