      Some people just have a larger than life aura about them, some of the stories about Clough are amazing, the stuff he got away with.
      One from when he was a player he scored 3 goals but the team lost 4-3 and he stood up in front of his teammates after and said "here lads, if I score four next week do you think we might have a chance of winning a game". Most people just wouldn't get away with that but Clough was a rare one who could.

I'm not saying his success was gaurunteed, but if he had gelled with the squad it would have been champagne and roses all the way. Leeds United hated him, he lasted 44 days. Nottingham forest adored him. He took them from the bottom of div 2 to the top of div 1 ( no English Premiership back then ) and got them to win the European Championship TWICE!!

Clough was a maverick who the FA couldn't tame, he was 'unsafe' I'm convinced he and Taylor would have won a trophy with England and to think we didn't even qualify for three tounaments during his prime utterly shames the FA.

      Peter Peter The truth is unpopular it is an observable fact that if people insist on acting without ascertaining the situation they can unwittingly cause themselves problems hence why we look to a superior force to look after us. It’s like sheep wanting a sheep dog. I’ve no idea about other aspects of his life and behaviour being open minded and always interested in understanding things clearer I will take your word and look into it. Thank you best of health to you.

    • @seanscanlon9067
      @seanscanlon9067 Před 4 lety +4

      @Peter Peter It is quite important that when you make an accusation that you are accurate with it and helps if you use quotes rather than your own interpretation of matters, with you saying Clough "said Lpool fans caused the Hboro disaster" when in fact what he actually said was “I will always remain convinced that those Liverpool fans who died were killed by Liverpool people" which although might seem like splitting hairs, is not the same thing.
      That said, he was later quoted as saying he was “misinformed, I wasn’t trying to be vindictive or unsympathetic, but my opinion has altered over the years. It was never my intention to hurt anyone.”
      Do not forget that Forest were Liverpool's opponents that day, that this was at a time when football hooliganism was at his height and Clough being old school Labour, would no doubt have been against Thatcher trying to bring in ID cards, and he has even smacked a few pitch invaders fans of his own at Forest too.

    • @seanscanlon9067
      @seanscanlon9067 Před 4 lety +5

      @Peter Peter I am not sure how me quoting Clough's own words makes it gibberish, but still. Unless of course you are suggesting that it was gibberish from Clough, which it clearly was not and was just a changed view based on new information.
      Do not forget he was there himself and would have seen fans running onto the pitch, with some of them jumping about and waving at the cameras, not knowing themselves the severity at the time, just Clough did not know the causes either.
      Your claim was that Clough had said Liverpool fans "caused the Hboro disaster" and whilst I personally would not have worded it like that (and neither did Clough) the deaths were as a result of how the fans reacted.
      Now I not for one minute blame those fans because in a blind panic you can not really expect anything different, and how the ground was policed that day and its infrastructure back then played a part too, but that is how it happened, fans were squashed by other fans.
      Clough obviously at the time put that down to aggressive and hooligan type behaviour and then later admitted he was misinformed and was wrong and so said as much? So isn't that better than sticking to his guns despite knowing he was wrong?
      I am making no judgement either way on what he was like regarding anything else and just on this matter.

    I liked Cloughie but one thing's always puzzled me. Why would the FA constantly pass him over or disregard him for the England job as everyone makes out? Why would they ignore the opportunity to appoint someone, even if that someone was a nightmare to manage, when it could have brought us the greatest victory in international football? As I said, I'll always admire Clough but this "the FA wanted a yes man who they could control and that's why they never chose Clough to manage England" doesn't always ring 100% true for me

      Even more than missing out on Cloughie managing England, and them potentially not being shite just for once, we missed out on his post England match interviews. Can you imagine him at the 82 World Cup after Keegan's point blank miss?

      Clough succeeded at Derby and Nottingham Forest where he built teams from scratch. There were players of considerable ability but few "stars". Managing the national side involves picking the very best players available, which is different from being in charge at club level. His experience at Leeds might give a hint at how he would have fared managing England.
