Brian Clough In His Own Words
When Brian Clough died in the autumn of 2004 at the age of 69, the world of football mourned one of the greatest managers of all time. In this film, recorded as he received the Freedom of the City of Derby award in May 2003, Clough says being the manager of Derby was 'the best job I ever had'. Also included is an emotional final tour of the scene of many of his Derby triumphs, the now demolished Baseball Ground, plus extracts from a memorial service for the great man at Derby County's new home, Pride Park Stadium, in October 2004.

During the season as a whole, Shilton conceded just 18 goa...

Look at Pep now. He's only ever been to clubs with money and the finished product ready to win trophies. He couldn't ever come close to Brian Clough. What Clough did with Derby County and Nottingham Forest isn't something Pep will ever be able to do. You will never ever see him go to a club without an endless pit of money or a club that isn't ready for trophies. Until I see him take a club that is midtable to bottom with a shoestring budget and win a title and make them nye on impossible to beat his accomplishments will never ever come close to those like Brian Clough, Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, or Jose Mourinho. That is without mentioning City's charges. I don't think he would even be at City without the Arabs being there and the fact they can do whatever they want without question, yet anyone else try's it, and they get done instantly. Any job that poses an actual challenge you will never see Pep take.

I’m not really into ranking the best managers from 1-10 so I won’t be tempted to say where I would rank Clough over than to say he belongs in a group with Shankly, Ferguson, Paisley, Busby, Guardiola and Mourinho.

THE greatest Character in football Ever.....and one of the greatest Managers ever. His achievement speak for themselves, but had he been given better financial backing, could have done even better - for example Forest were 2nd in 1979 and 3rd in 1988 and 1989. ANd of course Forest was literally cheated out of a UEFA Cup Final in 1984 by a bribed Referee. I was lucky enough to see him many times by attending Forest games.

Thanks for posting. I was 19 when I joined up and couldn't go to every home game any more. Clough and Taylor used to arrive in the car park at Forest, just as I did after walking to the ground off of the Barton bus from Leicester. BC used to scan the crowd and only parents with children would approach him. He had an aura. I regret not having the nerve to try and speak to him. They were halcyon days.

Sheffield United conceding 100 goals with two left to play brought me here. However, with Swindon this was an era where teams coming up, often went down and always spent in their means, not over the top like today. Also, they fought hard and gave it a good go, while Sheffield United not once in their games looked like they were trying, there was no fight when with Swindon there was in a very tricky relegation favourite situation.

Not sure what quantifies best manager ever, is it longevity, trophies won, different clubs, money spent or whatever but speaking as a man utd fan obviously sir alex has to be no1 but sir Brian runs him really close. Only just remember the Derby years but loved the Forest domination. (Especially against the scousers). The man was a great player, great manager but most importantly a great human being . What a man!!!

I love the bit, when Revie states, you can’t win it better than us, we only lost 4 matches. Cloughie only lost 3 with Forest’s first title, 7pts clear of the great Liverpool side, when it was 2pts for a win! Also went 42 games unbeaten, & two and a half years unbeaten at home! Legend really does apply to this man.

How to completely ruin a Clough quote! The very last words of the whole video too. “I wouldn’t say I’m the best manager but I’m in the top one” was the superb quote and certainly wasn’t “I wouldn’t say I’m the best manager but I’m number one for sure”.

I think that Derby fans must feel even worse. I know that BC resigned from Derby (not sacked), but he said in later years that he regretted it - had he stayed, I think he could have taken Derby to European finals....as it was he made Forest, not Derby, the dominant force in Midlands football for the following 18 years !!!

58:59 How could the Forest not have been as good as the Derby side? That Derby side won one trophy under Clough, the Forest side won five, including two European Cups. Derby won the league by a single point, Forest won it by seven points and with four games to spare. Forest set a record of 42 league games without defeat...
