These things really are an oddity though. They also only happen at the super-sized mega festivals with 50,000 people. Every medium-sized to small-sized festival I've been to has been a total blast and felt extremely safe and welcoming. At most festivals, the most dangerous thing to you is yourself (too much drinking, drugs, not enough food/water, sun sickness, etc...)
I go to a festival called the Peach Fest in Pennsylvania every year, it probably caps at around 15,000 during the headliners. The festival grounds is HUGE and the stages are spread apart so the crowd doesnt ever get packed in like sardines. There are well-designed walk ways and barriers to control crowd traffic, and the music is classic rock, psychedelic rock, funk, reggae... hippie stuff, which means the crowd is gonna be much more safe, friendly and welcoming than a rap festival or a metal festival.
Do research if you ever wanna check out a festival. Most festivals have a facebook and or reddit group where you can ask questions and find information to give you an idea what to expect.

You won't ever want to go to a festival again when you realize that massive festivals in big cities are run like nightclubs (Ultra, eZoo, Coachella) and the VIP is full of tables of young women given tickets for free (I've gone to ezoo year after year for free). Same concept as a club they want the young women to get as drunk as possible for free and sleep with clients so that clients come back. There's a guest list at ezoo vip, etc. Thousand dollar tickets wasted on underage children so they get harmed. Welcome to New York.

i’ve been to electric forest 3 times and the first two were genuinely the greatest experiences of my life, i could write a book on how amazing it was to attend. i’ve lived in michigan my whole life and when i was a lil scene kid at 12 years old, i heard that electric forest was gonna be an annual thing instead of rothbury fest. i saw the articles and pictures of what it would be and i fell in love. i knew i needed to go. fast forward to me being 19 and i finally went for the first time. my first year was after going to tennessee for bonnaroo, and that was my first festival ever. i had the best time at ef despite some of the wildest complications. and my second year was just as good. i had tickets for 2020, it was the 10 year anniversary but obviously it was held off. we finally reunited in 2022 and honestly…. the vibes were off. it wasn’t the same forest family i fell in love with, even tho it was the same forest i fell in love with. don’t get me wrong, it was still the greatest time. electric forest is genuinely the most magical place on earth, disney couldn’t hold a candle to it. festivals are just kinda, not a community as much as it used to be it seems. there are smaller edm fests popping up all the time, but camping festivals seem to be going out of style and i hate that. i just wanna be PLUR with my rave fam for 5 days straight no breaks again

i went to my first local festival when i was 12, my first multi genre festival at 15, and i've been to at least 20 in the decade since. they're definitely getting worse as the years go on and it genuinely breaks my heart. life is beautiful is celebrating 10 years this weekend and it's my first time not going. the lineups aren't worth it anymore. a lot of artists i've seen since the pandemic aren't into it either. they're either more committed than ever or phoning it in bc crowds are shit. damon from the gorillaz was getting irritated with our coachella crowd this year at some points and alex turner cbf to do much of anything at last year's lib.

I was so scared when it started coming out that it might be a scam and that I just signed up for a nearly $700 package, that I was paying increments of $85 every month, for it to not be real. But, come October, I went to Las Vegas for the very first time on vacation with my best friend and we had a fucking BLAST. It was so cool to see all of the bands that she and I formed our friendship around, on all of the same stages, all at once, together after twenty-five long years of friendship. i played over 250 festivals as a VJ for Don DIablo. in the USA, did most of the big ones like Ultra, EDC, Electric Zoo and Coachella. And i know that Coachella has a lot of Electrical problems. and to get to the festival from the airport is a hellhole. The city is not build for the amount of traffic and power needs of the festival. We also got there 10 mins after our starting time. and lost power 2 during the show. You have to consider the big artist do a lot of festivals in the summer and sometimes twice on the same day. and big bands or artists with instruments are even more hectic to tour on that level. The US festival scene is also weird compared to the rest of the world. But from all the big ones over there i would say that, EDC is the more professional organisation. Ultra has a good infrastructure for being in Miami, but is horrible for the artists. What trickles down in the performances.
But as a european and me personal as attendee i would say go to smaller festivals that focus on the experience and not just go for your favorite artist or DJ. You get to discover new music and the organisation has way more money to put in the utilities, accommodations and side attractions. remember a general price for a A list artist runs in the millions real fast. so with the electric zoo being under new management, their bookers had to pay top dollar for the artists. Most festivals make no profit the first couple of editions, but establish a base of fans and relationships with artists. Sad to see them burn that all.

I've been to quite a few festivals (Warped Tour, Lollapalooza, AfroPunk, All Things Go, Broccoli City, Reset Fest, When We Were Young) and luckily, I haven't had any seriously terrible experiences. My worse experience festival-wise had to be at Broccoli City in 2018. I swear that they had no filling stations and everyone was forced to buy overpriced tiny boxed water and to add insult to injury, the festival is held in a stadium parking lot and they didn't set up shaded areas even tho it was a hot weekend so we were all just roasting on the blacktop. I remember seeing the medic cart hauling away numerous people who had passed out due to heat exhaustion. Luckily last year, I got tickets to the second weekend of When We Were Young. The first weekend got cancelled due to dangerous wind speeds. I live on the East Coast and spent a lot of money on flights and accommodations in Vegas so I would have been pretty devastated if the second weekend was cancelled. I remember the girl who checked us in said that the week before she spoke to people who had come in from Australia for the festival 🙃

Warped tour was great. Glad that's the only festival type thing I've been to. They had water stations so everyone could stay hydrated without paying. They had structured stages and a good venue for it. Here in Utah it was the fairgrounds. So it was perfect. Only dumb thing is if you leave you can't come back, so you gotta come prepared to buy food. You get to meet smaller artists at their booths. I just remember loving it so much and that it never felt overcrowded. That and it was just around everyone who loved all our emo music shit 😂 so I never saw aby bad interactions between people. And one time my favorite artist walked by me casually making his way to a photo op booth and I got starstruck. Very cool festival.

Warped tour was amazing, was my first concert at 14 and I went every year after that. I wanna cry just thinking about how much I miss it, was literally my favorite day of the year 😭
the last year me and my friends traveled 5 hours away to Scranton PA so we could go to a second date, we usually only went to the Camden NJ date. Traffic was so bad when we got to Scranton it took us hours just to get a couple miles to the venue to park and we had no AC the whole time and it was 90 degrees, and then we had to literally hike 3 miles up a MOUNTAIN to get to the venue and I really thought I was gonna die that day. Then on the way home my friends entire wheel fell off her car like 3 hours from home late at night and we spent hours on the side of the road and getting towed and didn’t get home until 7am the next morning. I would still do it all over again because I had so much fun that day 😅
That year I mainly went for motionless in white(one of my faves of all time since I was 13 in 2013), amity affliction, beartooth, ice nine kills, palaye royale, crown the empire, issues (before all that shit came out about both issues and CTE 😬). I’m so sad we missed 3OH!3 because we were hiking up a damn mountain 😭
I mostly listen to goth post-punk/darkwave stuff, ghost, and hyperpop (everyone listen to dorian electra immediately) but I still have a love for the genres played at warped, it makes me very nostalgic for my teen years and was the first music I got *really* into and shaped me as a person and helped me through so much.

Venue organization just seems to be awful lately in general. I went to see Ghost at CCNB Amphitheater last month and the venue was super disorganized, destroyed the bands equipment, and after making us evacuate for rain kept baiting us and telling us the show was going to go on for 3 hours while making us wait and then rescheduled it at nearly midnight THEN cancelled it the next day
The venue is now defaming the band and bashing them.....
The security was laughing at us and blowing cig smoke in our faces while we were waiting, it was AWFUL.

I've only been to one festival (danish one called roskilde festival), but I went many years. It's a week long, but a part of the whole experience is the queue. At first you queue for the queue. That's without any shelter or toilets for how many hours you feel brave enough to do (I usually went there to queue for the queue for maybe 5 hours), but you want to be early so that you get the best place to camp (you have to run with your tents and shit because you don't pay for a specific place and you have to fight with the others to share the spaces given). When you finally finished queuing for the queue, you are now in the final queue, where you will be over night and be allowed to run inside in the morning. There's no shelter again, so when it rains you just vibe with it while drinking yourself senseless. At least there's toilets and water now, although not enough
It's honestly so much fun to go with friends and plan your strategy to get the best camping spot looking at the map and just drinking and snacking lol

I’ve worked multiple festivals held at the venue I worked at, and the festivals were great for overtime hours but absolutely awful to work. I worked every single one we hosted for the sweet extra cash, but I would be dragged kicking and screaming if my friends made me go to one.
From the rented extra security who have no clue how the venue works, our rules(or the additional festival rules some of them imposed), and genuinely are on a power trip every time with how aggressive they are to the way festival staff would treat us getting abusively upset when they didn’t explain anything other than whatever rules they imposed on top of our normal ones. I worked multiple roles at the venue while there, and the lines would sometimes get so bad because people would bribe ticket scanners or argue and go off when they bought a scam ticket. Once, a festival admin screamed at my coworker and me because they didn’t have a path set up to allow the ADA transport vehicle to get to the front of the venue where the ADA line and will-call were, and theoretically, we drove through a ticketed area though it was completely fenced off from the rest of festival. they ended up letting us continue using that path since it wasn’t ADA-compliant otherwise.
I did really love working warped tour since they came to our venue every year for years, so they were a delight. Beyond Wonderland was nice the few times they came to our venue as it never was overcrowded, and there was so much medical staff and water stations, so folks were, y’know, making it through the event without putting their life at risk(other than the dangers of potential drugs they smuggled in or took before coming, though they had booths that would check to make sure they were safe)

The only festival I've been to (and I only went opening year and haven't been back) is Railbird and that was a great experience. Super easy to park, super easy to go back to the car so we didn't have to buy food and drinks inside, super easy to get back in. The lineup was great, my fave Brandi Carlile was the reason I went and she was incredible. Also the fact that it didn't get super crowded until later in the day was cool, like I got to watch a lot of smaller artists without being squished and was able to just sit and watch on my blanket when I wanted. The only issue was there was a traffic jam getting out at the end of the night but it wasn't awful and it hasn't been an issue in following years, so I've heard. It's definitely a different crowd than I imagine Coachella gets, but it was really fun. Definitely my favorite experience seeing Brandi live!

A production employee at EZOO spoke up and said the coordinators had given them the floor plan A WEEK in advance… so they only had a week to order all of the stage parts which is quite literally impossible, especially with these big complex stages.
Also! I’m part of the rave community so I’ve only ever been to EDM festivals, but if anyone would ever be interested in any: all the EDC’s are absolutely amazing (going to the Orlando one this year and to the Las Vegas one next year woohoooo), and I’ve only heard wonders of Electric Forest (it’s a rave in a forest, c’mon!!) It’d be unrealistic of me to say that they never have their hiccups (everything in this world will have their ups and downs) BUT, I can guarantee the environment in these 2 festivals at least are all about the PLUR! (Peace, love, unity, and respect). It’s the most welcoming and accepting place ever istg. Even if you’re not from the community, they’ll welcome you with open arms and tons of kandi to trade!!🫶🏼

It's not a coincidence festival disasters are happening more often these days.
Organizations that run festivals don't give a shit, run everything on a shoe-string budget, barely pay for labor, under-staff, skimp on facilities, ticket prices are crazy high, the insurance they have to pay is also nuts. It's all money.
Even if a festival started as a space for music and creativity and community, past a certain point of success, corporate and monied interests swoop in and have great incentives to fuck things up.
That's part of why I try to go to smaller scale events and venues over big ass shows

I went to Electric Zoo all 3 (well... technically 2,) days and it was insane. Still haven't received a refund for friday cancelation.
Anyway, Saturday was a mess with figuring out where to go even to get to the entrance - once we had made it across the bridge we were told to walk to the OPPOSITE SIDE of the island with NO further directions or any workers to direct where to go because the entrance we went to was the VIP entrance. My friends and I waited for 3 hours just at the entrance and not needing to go to will call. People we're dropping like flies.
Forget trying to LEAVE the festival: we left at 11pm and were in line standing in the same stop for 3 HOURS. Not in line for three, the same SPOT. We had 3 people pass out around us and need to be rushed forward. There was also a huge fight at one point.
Sunday getting in wasn't bad for us, and leaving we thankfully managed to through the crowd with leaving 15 minutes early.
It was NOT a plur environment either, and really finalized that I'm only ever going to go to camping festivals.

Bought it the WEEK-of (wasn’t sold out) for $90-$100, stayed at my friend’s extended family’s place about 20-30minutes away, and spent about $40 on food. Saw Sonic Youth, Jarvis Cocker, Jesus & Mary Chain (ft. Scarlet Johansson haha), Tilly and the Wall, Amy Winehouse, Gogol Bordello, Arctic Monkeys, Bjork, and more, all for less than $150 and I didn’t even know I was going until a few days beforehand. Positive festival experience I had this year was FEQ in Quebec. Imagine Dragons are one of my favorite bands so in 2019 I went to see them at this festival, waited 10 hours and got barricade. Their set got cut short two songs in due to a huge storm. They were scheduled to come back for 2020 but that got cancelled for obvious reasons. Now in 2023 they finally came back for a full show. Waited since 10 am again with a friend at the gates (doors were about 6 pm and they started at around 9-10pm) While there was rain and storms in the morning aswell as really bad humidity, it was still fun. Grandson had a pop up set a 20 min walk from the gate so I walked through the rain to get there and back (with my friend holding my spot in line) Waited the rest of the day and got barricade. The festival was at a large field with a capacity of 100k but I heard rumors that people broke in and filled it to 127K. I made a poster like I usually do and got a pick from the bassist (hes awesome, ive got like 10+ picks from him already) and these had a design inspired by me! It was super fun, an amazing redemption show

Got to see Bleachers, Hippo Campus, Chaka Khan, etc. which are all huge deal for a mid-missouri town of under 200k. This year they were supposed to have more big headliners and did a big rebrand and changed the name. At the end of last month they just randomly canceled it for super vague and weird reasons. As a musical festival fan, it’s great to see this story going viral. In recent years, shit like this has been happening more and more at all kinds of events. Festivals have a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge overhead and very often the companies that run them go bankrupt trying to put on a good show. Some companies are trying to cut costs and max profits as much as possible. Artists are asking for more money when they perform year after year, venues need more insurance and have higher rental costs, and so the experience often ends up taking a backseat to the bullshit.
It sucks because music festivals are such a fun and wonderful experience when you actually get the effort put in to make it so. Insomniac is the best known owner of some of the biggest edm shows in the US, and they have found better ways to cut costs; things like: accepting volunteers in exchange for admission instead of hiring contractors for small labors or booking newer up and coming artists as opposed to large and expensive names. I am attending EDC Orlando again this fall and I am so excited for it. Insomniac likes to buy failing festivals and give them new life too! I trust any festival they run because they never disappoint me.

Brooklyn Mirage has had issues from the beginning. Its in a somewhat remote industrial area in the city where you cant always get reception and caters to a large crowd of tourists and transplants that don't know the area and wind up walking into shady surrounding neighborhoods. Security is really thorough with their checks to the point where you can't bring a stick of gum in, but will extort you at the end of the night to get your stuff back. Theres a big overcriwding issue in their main area at almost every event. Avant Gardner has never cared abt the safety of its patrons.

I went to coachella week 2 this year. Bought passes with no plan specifically because frank was headlining. We saw the news he backed out just a few hours after landing in LA. I spent a lot of time leading up to the fest listening to artists on the lineup to prepare as well as having a good handful of others I was already excited to see. At first me and the friend I went with were really nervous not knowing who would replace him. Then they confirmed Blink 182 and our hearts sank. No shade, just not the answer 2 distraught frank fans wanted to hear. But we had the suspense of this new slot after blink’s set. When word spread it was likely Skrillex, Fred Again, and Four Tet it instantly brought the weekend back for me. Every set we went to felt worth it. Amazing surprise guests. Perfect weather. The trio’s set to close sunday was one of the most unreal experiences of my life so far.

It’s an art festival in Vermont that is also like a mini Burning Man because it’s a week long and a massive structure gets burned as well. Camping in the woods with my family and bringing art projects to set up in the woods are truly the reasons why I love this festival :)
There was torrential rain in the last part of the week though - it happened that same week Montpelier was completely flooded- but we were up in the hills, so it didn’t flood. However, all the roads turned into thick mud similar to the depth of the mud at burning man, but it smelled like horse shit instead. It took us the entire day to pack up and leave and I was soaking wet just trudging through the mud in my crocs because fighting it was futile. There was some chaos with trying to leave, but nearly everyone got to leave on schedule.
I absolutely love this festival though, it’s such a fun and kind community and amazing artwork and music, but it’s just really intense and not for the feint of heart! This was just a bad year for festivals, but I will live and die for Firefly ❤

I went to Governors Ball in 2015, which was also on Randall’s Island, same as the Electric Zoo that just went down. Had a great time. Plenty of toilets and free water, great weather (mostly), no will call. Only festival I’ve ever been to. Decided to retire from festival-going w/ a .1000 batting average after that

One of my first festivals, almost ten years ago was a rave in a cave in Southern Illinois. Infected Mushroom played and the next morning day I did mushrooms for the first time.
