The Nissan Titan is gone - No more full size trucks for the brand in the near future

  • The Nissan Titan has struggled for sales since day one. The very capable full size truck has struggled to find its crowd even though it has lead in horsepower, warranty, and features. The sales have shown though that the Ford, RAM and Chevy crowds are not willing to give the big truck a chance.
    Today we are looking at some history of the truck and why we think 2023 is the last year of the Nissan Titan.
    Join in as Dave breaks down the latest on the pickup truck.

    I have owned three Titans over the years and never had a problem with any of the trucks. I currently own a 2021 Titan Pro4X fully loaded and I really enjoy this truck. Comfortable seating with a smooth ride. Nice strong growl sounding V8 engine with none of this cylinder deactivation or turbo boost bull shit that eventually fails. Shame on Nissan for not promoting this reliable truck.

My neighbor has a platinum reserve and thats what turned me towards Nissan. It seriously checks all the boxes for someine that tows a trailer under 7k lbs. The XD is the perfect balance of heavier duty 1/2 ton. The value is unbeatable. I got my XD pro4x fully loaded for less than what im seeing posted in these comments. I'm still seeing these trucks for sub $60k (fully loaded).

    I recently purchased a brand-new 2023 Titan Pro-4x with most of the options except for the sunroof and convenience package. The MSRP was 60k, but I was able to buy it for 50k, which feels like a good deal. Maybe I could have negotiated a bit more if I had driven off the lot, but my wife and I were still very happy with the purchase, especially considering the 5-year 100k warranty. love the truck with good old v8, no turbo or v6. @Xterraforce Před 11 měsíci

    You hit the nail on the head Dave. Nissan's marketing is pretty bad and not just for the Titan. Over the years they have had many good vehicles with great potential but basically either stopped promoting them shortly after their release or if sales dropped a little or worse, never did a good job of promoting them at all. The Xterra is a good example. While it wasn't heavily advertised the ads they did have were pretty good. The "everything you need, nothing you don't" was a great concept and good description of exactly what an Xterra was. But shortly after it's released it was rare to see an ad for it anywhere. Then when it was updated for 2005 there was almost no promotion at all and it stayed that way until its demise. They promote their most popular crossovers and econoboxes but that's really it. Everything else is a side note at best. When other companies see a drop in sales figures they typically say "Let's step up the promotion of this one and start working on refreshing it." It seems like Nissan says "Sales dropped a little. Stop spending money on advertising and updates." As for the Titan, if it weren't for hearing about them from people who owned and drove them I would have no idea it was a good truck or really anything beyond the fact it exists.
    Another thing that is lacking with Nissan sort of goes along with advertising, especially in the truck segment. That is aftermarket support. Other manufacturers put plenty of effort into working with aftermarket companies and providing them with details or even preproduction units so they can have parts available as soon after release as possible. I don't believe Nissan really encourages the aftermarket in the same way. Naturally an aftermarket company isn't going to be very interested in developing parts for a vehicle if the manufacturer isn't even promoting it. It ends up being a losing cause. Some people won't buy a truck if it doesn't have a lot of aftermarket support to customize it the way they want and the aftermarket isn't going to waste time and money developing parts for a truck the manufacturer doesn't seem interested in selling.

I got a fully loaded pro4x for only 59k which beats the competition by a large margin. From 2005 through 2022 Nissan and Toyota combined for 2,659,023 full size truck sales. Meanwhile, Ford alone sold 13,086,802 F-Series trucks. So if Ford were the only other player in the full size truck game they alone would have controlled 83% of the market during that time. Throw in Chevy and Ram and Toyota and Nissan were fighting for crumbs and the only real opportunity either had or has was to be the truck your brand loyalists might, and I say, might, consider over one from the big three. Nissan's conversion rate was about 3.26% and Toyota's was about 6%. The new Tundra is on track to sell about 119,000 units this year which is just over it's historic average of around 113,000. Considering the last all new Tundra in 2007 sold nearly 200,000 units in it's first year before quickly tapering off this might be a disappointment for Toyota. In any event, the big three are not giving up any ground as time marches on. So what should Nissan do other than cancel the Titan?
    Lord knows I've discussed many possibilities and Dave has, too.
    Nissan doesn't have the resources Toyota does but then who else does? Ford's success or failure is so intertwined with the F-Series that they'd spend their last borrowed dollar to keep it afloat if it were sinking, which it's not. On the other hand, Nissan has to bring something new to the table but I can see why they would be gun shy seeing as they wasted incredible amounts of money on projects like the Titan XD as well as the NV vans. Of course, relentlessly ignoring transmission issues that cost them hundreds of millions in warranty work didn't help either. Yet for all that Nissan still has a very good pickup platform in the F-Alpha frame and good interior designers. Heck, sometimes the exterior designers even do something original and awesome. Nissan still has some great engines and the overall Armada/Patrol suspension is rated in some versions to carry as much payload and tow nearly as much as the Titan. If Nissan would come to realize that they are not competing with the big three directly but rather as an alternative to the status quo they might be able to come up with a brilliantly different near full size truck that rides and handles better than anything the truck world has ever known. One that carries and tows more than enough for the sort of buyer who would buy one and perhaps even get better mileage than anything else on the market. After all, both Ford and Toyota went for power in their hybrid systems with Ford actually providing some useful utility beyond simply improving power with theirs. Perhaps Nissan could be the one though that uses a hybrid system to get 6 or 7 more MPG and see if that turns any heads. For the foreseeable future the truck world is going to be better off as a hybrid hauler rather than a limited range full electric burden. Yet even Toyota missed the boat on that one. I'm not saying it has to be called Titan or that it even has to be truly full size. But if Nissan can get the styling, packaging, capability and especially pricing right they'd have a larger, yet body on frame, Maverick on their hands.
    Ford is the truck leader for a reason and it's because they actually lead. The first twin turbo v6 in a full size, a true modern performance truck, and the aluminum body to name a few. Even the hybrids power plant utility is innovative if not much of a MPG champ. Chevy and Ram were reluctant to admit it but Ford was right and they were wrong so both now have turbo engines in their full size trucks with Chevy's being a 4 cylinder. And both brands are using aluminum and lighter weight materials where they can. So Ford has shown that people will go along with change if that change proves positive and useful or at least if they perceive that it is. Nissan was once so bold introducing the first small truck in the U.S., the first crew cab truck and the first factory spray in bed liner as well as a superior tie down track system. Sure, they might have to do a parts bin truck but the parts bin is actually pretty well stocked. But the end result would have to be different, innovative and an accessibly priced alternative to the status quo, not just another $60,0000 version of what everyone one else is doing. Otherwise they might as well put resources towards a superior Frontier and perhaps a rugged midsize SUV. As Dr. Suess once said, "Be yourself, everyone else is taken."

  • @JasPlun
    @JasPlun Před 8 měsíci

    Big Mistake and what they should have done was increase Fleet sales. There is a huge shortage of work trucks right now. Companies that depend on fleets are scrambling to find affordible work trucks. While Ford and GM are focused on 70-100 grand luxury trucks Nissan could have re-focused there Titan plant into making 3/4-1 ton trucks specifically work trucks! Once they start getting fleets out in the world people will drive them and some might switch to them as an everyday truck if they built them well and the last 2-3 years the Titans were very good with way less problems. Nissan had a golden opportunity missed by ignorant executives!

    • @AllTerrainNation
      @AllTerrainNation  Před 8 měsíci

      Many fleets want more fuel efficient engine options and Nissan never brought the v6 to the truck. But I agree they should have targeted the fleet side

    • @JasPlun
      @JasPlun Před 8 měsíci

      Then there are many fleets that need power for towing and hauling so I do not buy into that arguement. My own company is struggling due to worn out equipment and how hard it is to buy fleets. We have had a fleet ordered from Ram for 2 years and just taking delivery at the end of the month it is that bad. If Nissan offered 2500 3/4 ton 4x4 trucks we would have jumped on them, but they did not have what we needed so that was a failure on their part. We also contract for the largest electric utility in America and they themselves have struggled with equipment so Nissan should have taken advantage of those opportunities. Just my opinion though.@@AllTerrainNation

The Pathfinder looks ugly to me I think Nissan should just slowly die off. I say the same thing with Buick as well should die off. I owned a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder SE and a 2005 Nissan sentra and also a Buick Ranier as well now I own a 2016 Ford Escape SE

    It makes sense due to lack of sales but it’s sad that they are canceling the Titan. I’ve learned there is a solid group that is backing the Titan.
