The device in this video is a media prototype that was provided to me for this video. If you decide to buy this product, I will not make any money. The company also did not provide me with any financial incentive for this video. - Hry
Long time, no see. If there's something you'd like me to cover in the full review, leave a suggestion.
tweak out the bejesus our of it for switch. mostly indie switch games that are also on PC.
So genshin impact, please
Also, what snapdragon device is this chip comparable to?
Saturn Games!
I'd like to see the screen color "corrected" with software as you mentioned in the video. I'm okay losing out on some contrast and brightness if it helps to somewhat correct the white balance of the panel. Was very interested in the device until seeing how bad the panel looked.
First of all great video Taki! Multiplayer support, HDMI output with BT gamepad support would be terrific!
Considering how terrible Borderlands 2 ran on a vita natively, I'd call that stellar emulation
Can't believe that game was even a thing on Vita. Should've never been released
@@canadianturtle7240to be honeest it was a quite good game one of the best games on the console. it takes some jank to get used to but definitely there is a good game there!
i had a modded ps vita at the time but i remember being in love with it and how surprisingly smooth it ran when OVERCLOCKED. not many people go that far but when it works- Trust me it works! i remember playing the thing for about a year straight lol. before i sold it for some weed like a dumb ass.
@@canadianturtle7240when on default settings the game is near unplayable if your not a very big borderlands fan.
@@canadianturtle7240im happy it did lmao, now it can be emulated
@@covids12345 There's not really a reason to emulate the game though and it's already on PC probably shouldn't get this device if you want to play borderlands 2
That screen evaluation in the end was amazing
I don't get how he didn't know that Retroid knows about the screen color issue and it's only on the review units and will be fixed for retail. Retro Handhelds and Russ and them knew about this and mentioned it.
@phinyo2066 Sounds like a whole lot of copium. That screen shouldn't have left the factory let alone go to one of the biggest reviewers of their products. There's a good reason Taki hasn't reviewed any of their devices in some time.
If you think the preproduction product is okay for review, you know how they treat final product.
@@TheBdog113 I mean even in the video when he did the comparison. The leftmost was a review RP3 and the middle left was a retail RP3. How is it coping to expect the same thing to happen for RP4?
Really appreciate the battery test and its input and charging stats. Thank you!
I love the way you review products, it's alot more interesting and engaging then others.
I appreciate that!
I really appreciate how you are taking upon yourself to change the metrics on ps2 compatibility and I found your categories much more palatable and helpful because of it! Thank you for the in-depth first impressions, you are awesome!
Your shot the shoulder buttons and triggers does a great job of showing the textured feel! Insane to see how the industry is evolving and refining tbe smaller design components
Thank you for your focus on grip with the triggers. That could easily trigger carpal tunnel after only a minute or 2, so i appreciate the information.
Thanks for the video. I believe goretroid is aware of the screen color balance and have said the production screens wont have the green tint and they are working on an OTA update for the engineering samples.
This is so organized and methodical and it’s just a first impressions. Thank you for your work can’t imagine how much goes into these videos. Because of people like you we can make more informed decisions 👍
Great video! I'm happy that your relationship with Retroid has improved. I was missing your inputs on their latest devices.
Great review video on the RP4 Pro. Glad you tested FFX! Runs smoothly! Awesomeness!!
9:37 now this is something I'm interested in since I would mostly want this to play retro shooter, and hearing about that dead zone on the triggers worries me
The dead zone is something that can be adjusted with updates so hopefully a none issue in the long-run
Thanks for the review. You are very helpful for a beginner like myself as you explain the basics of terminology as you go.
Maaan. Great review as always. I've had my flip for literally 2 months today. I definitely love my clamshell but there's no denying this is a better, more exciting experience. I knew there would be some fomo buying a device right before going in to the new year. There's always something new in the world of emulation these days.
Thanks for your very thorough honest reviews. I know I can always get a straight answer from your videos!
I think the RP2s was the testing ground for most of what retroid wanted to do on the RP4. They use a lot of similar components and generally seems like a product that was meant to take more of the risk for the RP4
Great video. Cannot wait to receive mine. Your channel is one reason I decided to start my own.
24:08 - You are completely correct. There are so many videos with non-optimal options and emulators being used for edge-performance situations. I can't believe more people don't talk about this... I mean it is something like 7/10 reviewers of a device that seem to literally know nothing about handheld software, and instead choose to talk at length about color options.
That's why i kinda hate the retro handheld "community".
It consists of manchild consoomers that don't even know how to play games.
Awesome. Despite me buying an Odin 2 recently, I still want this. I got to try my buddy's Retroid Pocket 3 plus and I really liked the form factor but he recommended I wait for the next model. I'm glad I did because maybe this can handle a bit more emulation than it's predecessor
Honestly it's like the perfect size. People are complaining that screen is too small. I got a ROG ally if I want a larger screen. I find myself playing more of the emulators on the RP
Pretty thorough for a first look, you got a subscriber and i don't even do mobile emulation.
I really wish the RP2s and RP4 had settings to adjust the sensitivity curve of the triggers
Great video Taki! I'd love to see emulation tests for Need For Speed Underground 2 or Hot Pursuit 2
Regarding the trigger buttons:
I really hope that they fix the sensitivity curves in the software if possible. I play racing games a LOT and that sensitivity curve is a significant issue. However, in terms of applying pressure on the triggers, I would like to see how comfort changes while using the analog sticks and triggers when holding the RP4 triggers with your middle fingers and not the pointer, which is how I think it is designed for.
its been posted that the sensitivity issue is fixed for retail
I am super interested in this, such a compact little beast. Might pick this up!
I am extremely excited for this device. I hope mine comes soon
Hmm. I've been thinking about ordering the rp4p for a while. However that screen issue puts me off buying for now.
Truly appreciate the video!
Edit: it would be awesome for a Ota fix on it.
Guess it's a wait and see game.
I am so GLAD you tested the battery and charging performance, my big worry was the battery going empty faster than it can charge while playing over hdmi.
I’d be interested in seeing multiplayer tested across various platforms and how it works or doesn’t. For example; Pokémon battling/trading in gba, Smash Melee on GameCube, gran turismo on ps2, and maybe something like monster Hunter on 3DS.
I picked up two of these to be able to play games with my girlfriend and seeing the capabilities and a brief example would be nice. Might be too much for a general overview video, but would definitely be appreciated.
The only place to find the handheld you will like. Thank you @Taki Udon
Nice vid Taki! Sounds like things will be addressed with the Screen later on. Hopefully the fan speeds will be tweaked as well at some point. I'm kind of deaf though from too many metal concerts so the sound of it ramping up won't bother me too much lmao 🤣. If you get the chance, could you please test Paper Mario TTYD, Zelda Wind Waker HD, Zelda Twilight Princess HD, then Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D, & Zelda Majora's Mask 3D? Thanks!
I laughed at the metal concert thing - been there.
This guy managed to pick every single game I wanted to test, I am also a huge Zelda fan though. Seconded!
@@ExplicitniceHeck yeah buddy! Zelda is awesome and will always be a favorite series of mine 😄
So excited for this
to see examples of crash bandicoot games for ps2 would be awesome! great vid cant wait for more :)
Huge thanks for showing OSRS on this device, I am always curious how it runs since I play so much 😄
Im seeing comments elsewhere that say an OTA update fixes the "green-ness" of the display. Maybe we'll see it in a more in-depth. (I'd personally like to see more Wii and ps2)
Subscribed to see if it happens!
Great intro to RP4 Pro. Would really like to see how it does with Phantasy Star Portable from PSP on your emulation video.
Man the clear look so great!.. I hope the blue one is just as good.
Ah, cool to see your opinion about this one 👍
I'm curious to hear if the Dimensity SOCs are as well supported as snapdragon are, for emulation....
They're not
It's not, but dimensity chip is cheaper so there you go.
Yep, sold. Exactly what i was waiting for
Thank you Taki
Great video Taki. I'd love to see what switches they used for the bumpers in comparison to the 3+. Saw a lot of posts on Reddit about issues with the 3+ switches and experienced issues myself.
9:30 feels more like a personal preference vs an issue with the device. like on my switch in handheld mode i still pretty much hold R and ZR together with two fingers as it helps change the hand position to make precise(or as precise as the joycons can be) aiming. issue still stems tho if you did want to use only your pointer finger and thumb only then you would need to swap the position of the ABXY and the stick akin to something like the wii u gamepad or steam controller(technically)
Really hope they can adjust the analog trigger ranges and the color balance in software or before shipping, because otherwise this really does a lot of what I want out of a handheld. Android with decent gamecube/wii performance, and functional 3DS are the big ones for me, thats the era of video games I'm most attached to I guess, including the n64 a bit. Stuff like Star Fox 64/Adventures, Defender (GC), Wind Waker, or some of the 3DS zelda/fire emblem games. I'm particularly concerned about the triggers since some games (looking at you defender) have different functionality for a light press or a 'click' of the trigger, and poor analog control will make that hard to manage in emulator, necessitating rebinding the click functions to other keys.
during the retro handheld livestream they already confirmed that the screen contract issues will be fixed with a firmware update. seems all the pre-release devices have this issue.
Taki points out though at 33:08 that software fixes to correct screens comes at the cost of overall screen performance.
It's a compromise, not a "free" fix.
Looks like this is going to be the device that I was hoping it would be. Price was never really a concern, I wanted a form factor like this that had basicslly full ps2 performance. I was kinda torn on the idea of a 16:9 device or waiting for a 4:3 one, but I think I want the 16:9 since it can handle wide-screen hacks and I'm more interested in the psp/vita library, and after not falling in love with the anbernic 405m.
I'll be grabbing one of these on Friday and the rg405m will be going up for sale.
Also per Retro game corps, the screen issue is fixed now
big balla
21:44I really appreciate that you showcase the hl2 Android port.
I cant wait for a review after the OTA update, want to see how bad the screen is after the color balancing, hopefully it's not too bad.
also I really hope the trigger sensitivity/dead zone can be improved
Thanks so much for the detailed view. I like the performance, but not so much the hard to use analogues sticks and green screen ring. Hopefully these can be fixed, as other than that, it’s a great device at this price point and indeed size. I’m personally considering both this and an OLED deck. Not a fair comparison, I know, but the fact this fits in your pocket makes it truly portable, which is an advantage in itself.
Here’s hoping Retroid improves these issues on this otherwise amazing device.
I don't watch every Taki video but when I do I'd say he make every effort to be fair to a device. And I feel like this is a fair first look. There are some things that are a bit questionable on these review units that make me feel like there's a moderate % chance we might see a hardware revision unless these quirks can be handled in software. That said you shouldn't buy a device for what you think it will _become,_ you should buy it for what it is now with the understanding it might not get much better. I feel like I should probably wait for the production models to reach reviewers hands before buying at this point, to see if there's any real improvement over the review units they sent out early.
Yayyy, Mommy and Daddy finally stopped fighting!!
Now that you two are good can you please tell Mom to shove all of this into a Flip 2.0 with lots of pretty transparent case choices?
I'd love a flip 2 so much tbh
Damn that was really in-depth for a first look 🫡
I’d love it if they could come out with an upgrade kit for the RP3+ but I’m not expecting it. Still some nice upgrades on the RP4
I mean, it looks kinda the same, but perry much everything for changed.
Thank you very much! Bummer you were not involved on this one, though.
With Yuzu out of the question, I now only want to know if stable Dolphin,
Citra and AetherSX2 are possible @2x with base model instead of Pro.
Apparently, I'm the only person who doesn't mind the select/start placement on the rp3/+. After playing it for about a day, I had no problem with the location. In fact, going back to play on my PSP, I find myself reaching for the TOP to locate those buttons.
I would have MUCH rather seen that space used for front-facing speakers. Speaker placement is my biggest complaint about the device, as I frequently rest the handheld on my fingers and end up blocking the speaker ports.
I'm not likely to jump on the RP4 as my 3+ is mostly a PSP handheld, and it excels at that.
Yeah I got accustomed to the start/select buttons on top quickly too. It was a relatively minor design choice compared to the vocal backlash. I did the Konami code in Life Force no problem first try today on my RP3+.
Good point that front firing speakers would have been a better and more meaningful update on the RP4.
I just really hope I can play Auto Modellista on the go now... 🤞🏽🤞🏽 Waiting for my 16bit color way. Started with the RP2+ and Miyoo Mini+. Love them both but I need a portable GameCube and the RP4P seems to be it
You can, I tested it.
Great to hear! Such a hidden gem of a game, thanks for the great video man. Was waiting for your review specifically
I personally use the daijisho launcher as my launcher on android.
Love the review, ty
Hopefully they fix the analog triggers with an update. Make it linear instead of exponential
4:22 I just learned a new way to use my digital calipers, thanks lmao
Bummer about the trigger sensitivity, you think thats something that can be adjusted with software eventually or is it a hardware flaw? Otherwise this device looks amazing and I will definitely be buying it, so excited to have a pocketable ps2 and gamecube emulation system!
Thank you for this entertaining and informative first look video. The D1100 is a phone chipset; if they'd kept the cellular modem and added a SIM card reader I'd buy this in a heartbeat to replace my phone. The screen is plenty big enough, Android is my preferred OS anyways, and it has a lot more performance for everything.
As it is, I'm not sure if I'd be better off buying this unit or putting the $200 it commands into my next phone budget. Other than possibly the RedMagic, no phone is going to have active cooling like this does. That matters to me. Your upcoming review will be helpful in making that decision.
A great video! I already preordered it, the screen makes me worried, let’s hope it will be okay
How did the screen being green get past every quality control for review units 😭
Bob the screen tester is colorblind...
Thanks!
Great review I am getting the odin 2, I hope they bring the dimensity 900 to the 2 form factor though
This is what I was looking for a year or two ago; I can't impulse buy it since I have an OG Deck these days so it's not really justifiable anymore. The pocketable size would sure be great though! Maybe something I'd pick up in summer.
Great video!!! Question: where did you get the side white grips for steam deck from?
It certainly looks like a promising device ... this in a clamshell format like the RP Flip and with a decent screen would be very difficult to resist.
I'm excited for the full review and your ideas for quantifying PS2 compatibility.
Great video also, if possible please test GC windwaker with HD textures pack and from switch indie games like dredge and eastward would be cool to see runing, maybe the last 2D metroid would also be nice for a review video.
That r2 buttons the perfect immersion for pulling up a gun ngl😂
It should be very interesting on how Anbernic is going to respond Taki. Thanks for the review young lad.
the Pro specs mention it can output 1080p via USB C. is that true, and does that bypass the resolution scaling issue?
Soo glad they moved the select/start to a functional location! But maybe to make it even better, separate them outside the screen like most controllers? 🤔
I wish they move the select start to the left as it much easier when pressing retroarch hotkey
thankyou for the detail review. you are the most trusted reviewer on handhelds on the internet. none of the other reviewers go through the deep actual use details that you do to pick out issues that other reviews don't do.
"Hey guys, this device is rad, you can buy it in blue, white, black and purple. I really think that purple is the best color, and it looks amazing." -- most handheld reviewers
I think Retro Game Corps goes just as in depth but in different areas. For instance he talks about pocketability and how well it travels
I do wonder if the, deadzone? Of the analog shoulders, is a software deal. You'd think the whole range of the potentiometer would be used.
A Retroid Pocket 3S with rp4pro specs would be killer.
Do you mean 2S? Cause I agree that'd be pretty cool.
@@Roosader Yeah! 4:3 with these specs.
I won’t lie - that green tint is so intense. Especially as a guy with tons of displays, it’ll stick out like a sore thumb. Looks like I’ll skip until they fix this issue.
Greens my favorite color, this will suit my green rp4 pro as well 👍
Surprised about the screens as i always thought they are the exact same (of course subject to panel manufacturing variance) across the rp3/3+/4 due to the same resolution/size and for economies of scale reason.
I don't have any issue with the rp3+ screen, though i sold mine after some months due to the small screen size, small buttons and lack of ergonomics/grip (not interested in an external one).
😊
Maybe you will add the settings of all emulators to the video? It would help a lot.
I feel like the shoulder button issue can be fixed in software with a driver update, but half the range being in the last 10% of the physical movement is a problem.
Thank you!!!
Indeed... Straight up an Odin 2 Mini... Hardware and Software wise... Happy Gaming...👌🤯🧐
I remember doing the left and right trigger spam to get super fast in f-zero. My friends hated me haha.
I don't mind the issue with shoulder buttons. If i decide to get this, i'll pretty much only play jrpgs.
ありがとう、タキさん。
相変わらず美味しい貢献です。
Delicious review, thanks man!
I recommend using on mario galaxy 1 & 2 the riivolution patch that makes the game playable with the classic controller 🙌🏼
You playing OSRS is a vibe
I'm glad you called out the whole catalog percentage thing that some reviewers do. Much love to Russ but it drives me insane when he says stuff like "Roughly half should be playable" PS2 emulation is hardly a given even on current PCSX2 builds and high end PCs, it's damn sure not gonna be that simple on a dead emulator running on mobile chipsets
RP4/RP4Pro is 750x1334 touchscreen versus the 1080x1920 touchscreen for the Odin Lite.
CPU-GPU is the same D900 on the RP4 and Odin Lite. RP4Pro is D1100 versus Qualcomm Snapdragon SD845 on the Odin.
Price of RP4 4GB/128GB is $149 versus $207 4GB/64GB or $237 6GB/128GB. RP4Pro is $199.
Thank goodness you went over the slight differences of the box it came in :)
You're the only youtuber I watch that never has any filler in their reviews. I love it
They fixed the green screen calibration on the retail version
Have you looked in the setting and checked the Analog deadzone trigger travel? It appears that yours might be set to high, try lowering it to see does it fix the problem, because the response of my triggers are perfect.
if you can figure out good settings for champions of norrath and champions return to arms (ps2) id love to see that. cant even figure out how to get those running well on my steam deck.
I wonder if the Analog triggers can be fixed via update. (I know it depends on if it is a hardware defect or some kind of glitch, but I am betting more on the later)
Hey taki, can you please let the cpu float with battery current active while you test emulators?
I really wanna see its power consumption, in low end and high end emulation.
What were the dolphin tweaks?
Also I'm assuming the trigger sensitivity can be fixed via software updates?
I'll talk about it in another video. As for the sensitivity, yes it is possible to fix that via an OTA.
so where do say xenosaga and .hack fall into in the emulation difficulty categories? Ive heard xenosaga can be hard but those are the 2 main series im really interested in playing on this device to start
Looking forward to the pocket flip 2
I wonder if taki, our sovereign king, has developed this himself just like all the other retro devices! God speed taki, thank you for single handedly designing, manufacturing, and shipping these devices for our pleasure.
herp derp

Thanks Taki! The trigger depth is a little frustrating, hopefully they can fix it with an update.
