I love when Taki goes deep for our enjoyment
Wii U?
Can you test (without) old visual novels (PC-9800) on it?
What do you think about exagear?
Can this be played on television? I feel a handheld that can emulate all of this NEEDS to have television/monitor compatibility
I saw kei's unit went to 2.6ghz playing Android games. But high performance mode seems to lower the cpu clock to ~2.3ghz
This console is not perfect, but the possibility of being able to play the most beautiful 3DS, PS2, Gamecube and Wii games at any time and on a real portable console and at a cost of 200 dollars is fantastic for me.
Sure... but it's more than half price of a steam deck that can emulate even more systems and play AAA title new games. Personally I'd just save up a little longer and get the deck
@@HalfMonty11 Fair enough, but the Deck isn’t for everyone. As a pretty small guy, I find it far too large and unwieldy to use, especially on the go. And all I really want in a handheld is decent GCN/PS2 emulation. Different devices on the market are filling different needs/niches, and that’s a good thing. :)
@@HalfMonty11It has a lot of drawbacks for double the cost. The size for starters makes it a lot less portable. The battery life is also worse. Plenty of consoles to play on a half price console thats more portable and lasts longer.
"beautiful" lol
alot game seem to bug becuz it not snapdragon
Man the effort you put into these videos are unmatched. I love the way you explain things like you did with how they fixed the screen and the possible implications.
I appreciate that!
Han arreglado la pantalla en el rp4 pro?
Dude I loved watching all the short game demos. So many of them where cool throw backs to fun games i played a long time ago.
Thank you for the in-depth coverage. I was definitely curious about how the older Odins might compare with the RP+.
Well done fella. Amazing work! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this.
You got a thumbs up! Thank you for showcasing the performances. Looks pretty promising.
Thanks for including video chapters ❤
So glad that you actually benchmark it on demanding parts of the game instead of just the intro. It is really appreciated thank you!
Even though I already have a Steam Deck like many others to play PS2 and GC titles, I'm considering this portable (after giving my RP3 to my little sister) due to how small it is, making it much easier to carry around when compared to the SD. Thanks for the review Taki!
The golden age of gaming....right in our hands. What a time....
Not really. The golden age was late 90's to early 2010's. All these systems are doing is making those systems accessible. If you weren't there, you didn't experience the cultural Zeitgeist.
@@9unslin9erPS2 was peak gaming. Everything after is a rapid decline. Everything before laid the foundation. Theres a lot of great games before PS2 but PS2 is the golden age
@@9unslin9erand in terms of being there, thats not necessary. Knowing this exists is. People have come to a point of praising games today that are garbage compared to what we had because they dont even know it exists. The recent popularity in retro games by younger consumers will make most games put out today unsaleable and force a new golden age in gaming or the industry will die. These retro consoles are doing God's work
@@9unslin9er That's what he's saying. You can have all those systems in your hands then.
Everyone thinks the best music/movies/video games/whatever was what they experienced at 15. Get over yourself. You are not unique.
Been waiting years for this!
Big big thanks for your excellent videos, I am new to this and your videos are my Northern Star
Thank you, Taki Hot Dog!!! I appreciate you!
appreciate the thorough video, am really fascinated by this device and have one ordered.
am really surprised to see the 5fps frame dips on random games such as 3ds (lugi's mansion 25:38) despite the device handling harder games on more modern gen consoles without the dips.
zone of the enders 2!!! thank you soo much for covering this!
Feel called out with the screen thing 😅
Touche, you explained your process and reasoning very well, I apologize if what I said offended you in any way.
Great video, great explanations. Still highly looking forward to receiving my pre-order
Excellent video as always!
Thanks man! Definitely make be feel better about my Odin Lite purchase! Still a little bummed I didnt wait for something with a Snapdragon processor, but for the price, still a great device.
I wonder if Retroid will come out with a Snapdragon device?
That ps2 game list you tested.. I can't express how thankful I am. That's very comprehensive.
Taki you’re awesome! Keep up the great work!!
Think you confused Ratchet 2 & 3 lol; Thanks for testing these ones out. I was looking to replay the Jak* and R&C series
Seeing Colin McRae rally 2 was really a blast from the past. I played the hell out of that game when I was a kid
Tks for the review brother! Much appreciate. Greetings from Brazil.
No problem 👍
this is the best review I've seem about Retroid 4 Pro, so far. You showed a lot of game examples, it seems very understandable how good is this guy
well, i have been asking for a proper comparison with the d900 model, and you are the only one who has delievered!
this is why Taki is always the review I wait for. i love retrogamecore and ETAPrime, but Taki has NEVER let me down!
thanks!
Are there any games that Don't run on d900 but run on this?
Damn. What a beast. Thanks mate! Cheers!
Nice detective work with the green screen issue!
I pre-ordered one of these a while ago, I cannot wait!
did you ever get it bro how long does it take and what website did you buy it off of
@@user-yg8fz8fb3s I got it strait from the retroid website, it took about 3 weeks though I imagine it will be faster now that it’s been released.
Appears to be £270 in the UK. I love the formfactor etc. Seems like a real solid system. But it's VERY hard to justify that sort of price, with things like the steam deck at £350.
Where is it 270? For me it's 200? Lol
It would be interesting to see break down different smart phones with this kind of analysis
really good video, super super helpful.
Thank you Taki for this deep dive on the Pocket 4 Pro. If it were any deeper people would confuse it with the Mariana Trench. It's obvious that a ton of work went into making this video.
Unfortunately for me, I watched and commented under the First Look video a few days after it was published. I assume most of this video was already recorded by then because not a single one of my amazing game recommendations made the cut. Maybe I just have terrible taste in games? Ha. Anyways, the one I cared about most was/is "WRC: Rally Evolved" for the PS2. It was Sony and Evolution Studios' rally game swansong and by all accounts they went out on top. My current Snapdragon 845 powered LG phone, the best gaming anything I own at the moment, can't run it well at all. If the Pocket 4 Pro could run it full speed at 1X resolution that would help sell this system to me. Does anyone know how well it'll run here?
A semi off topic question: My understanding is that all versions of the Pocket 3 and 4 series use third party iPhone 8/SE2/SE3 screens. Would a factory first party Apple screen be a plug-in-play upgrade for the Pockets 3 and 4? I'm asking because it's not that hard to find older mainline iPhones and newer SEs for sale dirt cheap that have good screens, but are otherwise inoperative. Or is this one of those things where even if it works it quite literally won't make a difference?
Great video! I love the long form testing, the more information the better! I have a question, what is the performance overlay app used after 9:20?
Excellent video
In super mario sunshine you need to set the aspect to auto, disable wide screen hacks and enable wide screen in the cheats to not get distortion on the sides
Great review alot of questions I had were answered. Was thinking of buying it but after watching your review I have no doubt in buying it now thanks alot. I just have one final question for the PS2 side of things does twisted metal black run smoothly?
As long I can play Burnout 3 Takedown, need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2, Gran Turismo 4 and Ace Combat Zero, im sold
This is the review I was looking for, especially since I already have an RP3+ and was unsure if the RP4Pro would be a pointless purchase. It's good to see that it won't be. The RP4Pro screen also looks incredible.
Cannot wait to get my hands on that one. Also, just to add, the Odin Lite is actually more than $200 on the manufacturer's page. Just another reason to buy the RP4Pro.
Pero la pantalla de rp3 plus tiene mas color que la rp4 pro?
Would love to see a video on audio sync and screen tearing fixes even on non "performance" games like Resident Evil Code Veronica on Dreamcast, or Legacy of Kain on PS1 and Dreamcast. Especially the FMV intros.
I got excited seeing the Pokemon Sword/Shield gameplay being so smooth, sucks that the rest of the open world is lagging so much. I made sure to write down some of your emulator suggestions. Thanks alot
that is exactly how it runs on the switch :P
Great Video! I just wat a handheld that can play Luigi's Mansion well, looks like this is the unit for me. Thanks again Taki!!
the purple retroid you showed had a really nice screen, at least from the video. I'd love to see that screen on the RP4.
The greenscreen issue is so well explained and thought-out. Very fair as well to Retroid. In my opinion your are the most trusted reviewer for this type of devices
Thank you.
I love my RP4 Pro. I'm actually really glad i didn't grab the RP3+ last year like I was going to. This thing is such a great device and it feels really well built for a so called 'budget device'.
Amazing review! Could not be more hyped right now
Want to say a little thing about the twilight princess footage
It is common that the game runs very bad in hyrule field, where you made the test, even on pc. There is a famous cheatcode to make it run normal, so i think we can expect that game running all normal with thar litle fix.
Great video :)
That was with the cheat code. I intentionally filmed there. :)
@@TakiUdonwoow, nice move there :)
(So, forget everything i said except nice videos and nice review, more in depth than expectee hehe)
@@TakiUdon i went checkmated
@@TakiUdon damn was really hopin to run some twilight princess, I wonder if other emulators fair better.
@@TakiUdon Darn, what a shame. Twilight Princess was one of the main games I was hoping to play on the 4 pro. Hopefully we'll see improved compatibility in the future (I don’t know how likely that is, but a guy can dream, right?)
I had to come back and say that this is the best deep dive video I've seen for testing games on the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. You actually test multiple games in the same series (God of War, Metal Gear Solid, Metroid Prime, Jak and Daxter, and more) rather than others who just show one game or so per franchise.
I think for the size and price, this is a remarkable achievement. But it makes me wonder what a future Retroid Pocket 5 Pro would be like. I think we're almost there for emulation and battery life.
Probably 2-3x more powerful than the RP4 Pro.
Maybe they can use a chip similar to potential snap dragon but making it cheaper
Very nice video. I assume in a couple of years, we will get a device that can play almost all PS2 games. I have several on my wishlist, a long with N64 games and GameCube games.
Excellent game testing!
Nice. If I hadn't already bought a used 3+ last month for 100usd, I'd consider this. However, my main issue with the Retroid is the screen size so if I was going to get another handheld it'd most likely be the Odin 2. I probably won't because [1] I have a steam deck and [2] a Galaxy fold 5, for which I just got a Gamesir G8.
Yes, screen is too small.
yeah as a steam deck owner it's really hard to justify getting another handheld when they'll have less power and a smaller screen and or worse battery life. I even got an rog ally and returned it because I like the steam deck more. If I find one cheap enough though it would be fun to mess around with one of these
This was perfect! is there a max storage that this device can take? i would like to purchase one and have a 1tb storage card for all my games.
Great analysis!
Thanks!
Thank for playing metroid prime 3 ❤ and many others games never seen
I've currently got the Retroid Pocket 3 Plus but that's fine I can always buy an Odin or something in the future. I'm fine with what I've got now.
Was all the games tested at high performance+ max brightness?
What would be the ps1 consumption at standard with fan off?
with the smart fan setting could u not just repaste with better thermal compound to give it better power consumption?
or is there no thermal sensor to apply the best amount of cooling?
Hey sir taki, not related in your vid but im super impressed now with Citra mmj, even my phone (a mediatek helio g96) is able to run mh gen and mh3u flawlessly. But a year a go it was impossible.... Kudos to the citra developers. Also the ppsspp emulator which is already great but the devs never stop improving it. That makes my low end android phones that i dont use anymore comes back to life as an emulation machine
Great vid! What was the other app other than CPU float that you were using? Thanks!
Thanks for this awesome Video! What kind of monitoring App do you use?
Really impressive.
I'm waiting to have an handled console with 4 to 6 ARM CPU with Windows (Emulation ?) > Mobox style if needed. It will be a blast. That's the future for sure.
How does docking work? Can we use usb for controllers/other stuff while charging and using video out all at once?
Joey had Jak 3 running well by enabling the setting 'Threaded Presentation'.
He is using an older build.
Can you try how does the RP4 works with an external display ? can it show the native resolution of the monitor (let's say 1080p) while the screen of the device is off ?
Thanks for the deep dive video! Although they weren’t the main focus of the video, does this also play SNES, NES, and DS games perfectly?
Taki great video thanks. How do we enable that real time watt usage UI? Is it an app? Before you open up Aida 64. I am trying to get a similar ui to steam deck to see real time total device consumption and calculate estimated battery time left to optimize my per emulator settinfs
Hey Taki!
Great video can’t wait to get my hands on my RP4 pro. Just a quick question with twilight princess on the GameCube you think with the right settings I’ll be able to play the entire game at a solid 30 fps with minimal skips and dips?
Seeing you play it at hyrule with the cheat code and getting 19 fps really is a let down. I’m wondering because I’ve seen another video and they were getting 30 fps. You think there’s hope for that?
The rest of the game will be at 30, but the field runs like that.
@@TakiUdon Thank you for the reply!
hmm its interesting though because the rp3+ its possible to get 30 fps in hyrule field, i might have to do a lot of research lol. Thank you Taki, Great videos keep up the great work!!
Compare to the RP4. I find that the D900 plays most GC and PS2 great and has way better battery life than the D1100. This is kind of like the Qualcomm 888 that was more powerful than the 870, but the battery life is awful.
Fair point
@@TakiUdon I think the RP4 will be the better buy since betting way better battery life. Added: And still plays most GC and PS2 great.
@@rushmore3927 especially for a person like me who doesnt care so much about PS2/GC as much as DC/N64/PSP/DS and below. I think Id save the $50 and be happy. Also. I like RPGs mostly which run easier than detailed action games. The stuff thats hardest to run on GC/PS2 are really not my type of games (GoW/Colossus/Rogue Squadron etc) i dont really play that stuff
@@pleasuretokillproblems 4gb vs 8gb ram , 4gb sucks future Android games
@elisons True, but going back to my main point. Still does great for emulation. Also, less assets are tied up with ram on a gaming device. Phones with other apps, etc is a different story. To me FWIW, I'll take the battery life over a few less games that I'd likely not play anyway. Plus not a fan playing some of those on a 4.7" display.
Would love to see a handheld with this chipset but bigger screen, battery and ergonomics. I guess that's the new Odin, but that's almost $400 after shipping and everything.
1 hour of taki testing games to fall asleep to
zzz
I kinda wish the screen was larger in the shell and used more of those bezels. And if the clear shell was clearer and maybe had a white PCB. But that said, with the screen color being fixed and the triggers being fixed now, I'm gonna pick one up. I have basically not touched my rg405m in months, went back to my 35xx because the 405m just wasn't good enough for what I wanted. I just wish the colors were a tad better. The clear was my pick but your vids made me decide I didn't want the frosted look.
amazing work, taki
is the watts usage you mention on the power consumption section something to be worried about? or it's high, but normal? I'm a complete power related stuff ignorant
12W is a lot of power for something this small, but it seems to be fine as long as you keep the fan on high for PS2. Even with the fan maxed, it's possible for the CPU temps to go over 100c for a few titles.
@@TakiUdon12w!!! Are you serious? That's something my steamdeck would draw on a 3d game like dragon's dogma. 12w on an Arm processor is obsurd.
guess that rules out an ota patch to quieten the fans then, seems the loud fans are necessary@@TakiUdon
I've seen footage of Exagear running on the RP3+ with frames in the low 20s for PC games, is there any chance of this being a more feasible option on the RP4P?
In many PS2 games the gpu clocks between 70 and 100 degrees.am i wrong or Is a bit too High?
This is awesome. Playing PS2 games in this tiny form factor is so cool.
Thanks for the video, very informative.
I'm not an expert, but coming from pc gaming I have to ask, are those temps normal with some ps2 games? 100 degrees look scary.
I mean, is it ok to play for like two hours with those kind of temps without damaging the cpu or battery?
It's the die temp. The critical temperature for this package is 125C, but the device will shutoff if it reaches 115C. Occasional 90-100c temps on the die should be fine.
@@TakiUdon I understand, thanks for answering!
Great video
As a guy with a limited budget, this will probably be my endgame retro handheld.
I think the same Bro, in my case I only want it for downtime at the university, its price and capabilities seem perfect to me
@@rubensantiagoguerrerovalle5490 I don't need a Steamdeck, ROG Ally, or AYN Odin for now but I don't mind someday, all I want is to play PS2 and Gamecube with good to fair performance and a pocketability too in a reasonable price, If ever I want to play PC, I will just stream it to Gamepass.
same man same
This is not even sdm865 level device, it's just a throwing money to the abyss. Mi or lenovo pad be much better.
This is pretty impressive. Any suggestions of if I wanted to emulate Wii U games on a handheld? Theres a couple games I’d like to be able to play again
Instant I saw that slowdown during Pokemon went...ahhh yes....3ds Pokemon slowdown during pokemon coming out....love it.
Awesome video
Thanks!
Great work! Any idea whether it can play the famous 'Virtual Striker" in DreamCast?
It's almost 50 to 60 bucks expensive where I live but it looks so tempting. Ps2 on a handheld is a dream. I'll pick it up maybe sometime later this year to see if price goes down a bit.
Thanks Taki. Great dive in to the games. I'm still on the fence between this and the odin 2. I didn't really want to spend $299 on an odin. Plus the base model is hard to get. So this may just be the one to get. I've got a miyoo mini plus at present. The only issue is the screen size... Did you find it impacted much on the gameplay?
Just a stranger giving advice but: if you're interested in this, get the base model and spend half of what you intended on the Odin2 !
If you're really looking for a real improvement to PS2 emulation, try to get a Odin 1 Pro (it's 199 on their official website so you know it's legit). It's a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, so you'll have better support in emulation in general.
I have an Odin Lite, and given the small difference with the Retroid 4 Pro, very happy that I did in 2022 ! If I didn't have it, would go for the 4 base definitely.
@@Allyouknow5820 thank you. Advice is always welcome. I think the rp4 base would be too underpowered for me. I'd rather spend $50 more and get the pro. My max budget is £250 as I'm uk based. So I guess that's around $300 ish?
Is there split screen and second controller a possibility ? Like may I play lotr return of the king with a friend or not ?
If it hasn't already been pointed out to you the cpu boost seems to be a power profile issue. During your Power Consumption Deep Dive section, on the Standard setting the 3 lower cores were boosting to 2.6 and the usual 2.6 core was lower about 2.1. I did ctrl+f to see if anyone else put 2600 or 2.6 in the comments and didn't find any.
Jet Set Radio is a real test for any Dreamcast emulator.
Hi nice detailed video, thanks for all the info. can someone tell me though, what is the game on the bottom screen from 1:29 - 2:17 ? cheers
I noticed a lot of graphical issues popping up in your GameCube section and was wondering if this is due to Android or if it was just your Dolphin settings? Would love to see another follow up video of your impressions after a month.
During some of the Pokémon footage and the Wii black ops footage, I noticed major assets and chunks of the screen flashing out of existence or just blinking black- what's going on with that? Is that something that can be fiddled with in the emulator settings?
Hey Taki, appreciate your work, would you consider giving space to exclusive games or games that aren't playable in some other handhelds without emulation? I mean you can play FFXII and on a Switch and Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 on the Vita, so I feel that's coverage that would be more useful to other PS2 games.
I'm pretty sure XII is easier to run on PS2 emulator than a Switch emulator. Plus if you want the bonus content in the Switch version, you can play the fan translated IZJS version on PS2
FFXII is natively available for Switch, thats what I meant@@Anthony-zm2nq
May I ask what settings you had for AestherSX2 particularly for Jak II? Apologies if I missed it somewhere in the video
honestly the fix for the green screen issue is nice to see. while it technically still exists with the start up logo, I don't think its a big deal now.
Excellent 👍
Hi Taki, thanks so much for your videos!
I'm writing to as if you have played Simpsons Hit and Run on the Retroid Pokect 4 Pro, my gf wants an emulator that could play that game and I would appreciate if you can tell me that this console will do the trick.
Take good care!
yeah the wifi radio interfereing with the speaker is why my RG351 needs a wireless dongle to use Wiifi. You can re-add the internal wifi but it's a pain
then again, I have to open it anyway to fix the headphone jack now....
Is there any way to undervolt the system? Also, I'd love to see a teardown to see what the thermal paste situation looks like.
I wonder how well rogue squadron 2 and 3 would run? What's with metroid and the pop in of the environment?
Everyone was saying saturn emulation was bad on this device. And that was holding me off from buying. Thanks.
Also do you think to wait for them to replace the current panel with one which has the correct colour balance? Instead of sticking with the current and risk future issues?
I’m on the same boat, don’t really want to purchase defective screen even though you can kind of fix it using OTA. Rather wait or buy device don’t have any hardware issue.
