A Family Mine Where Mining was Second only to Drinking

  • This was a small, family owned and operated mine. From the looks of the tunnel they did not produce much, but from the amount of whiskey, beer and wine bottles, they did drink a lot when up at the mine. #ruins #abandoned #decay #desert #explore #travel #Nevada #deserttrails #mine

Thought you might want a little background on the Cleland Mine. In 1933 Duke Cleland and Howard Bryant went in as partners on these claims. I believe it’s 8 claims. During WWII they were serving their country so for those years the mining ceased. There was a rack mounted as you came around the corner and see the main house with each year welded on a metal strip. 1933 until he passed in the 90’s. Scrappers stole them for $$
As a family we spent every possible weekend at the Mine. It was a hobby. All of us kids loved it. He’d dynamite one weekend. We’d muck the next. The windmills were not for power. We had a generator. The wire from the main cabin was for a handcrank telephone at the main tunnel. Which also was stolen
as well as all the ore carts he had accumulated. Duke collected stuff. He was not a big drinker. He liked a shot of whiskey on occasion. And he and my aunt shared a glass of wine of an evening. But the bottles you see everywhere we’re collected from businesses in Bishop CA where he ran CLELAND BROTHERS RECAPPING. For 60+ years he was the original ‘recycler’ in his tinkering projects. Hauling his stuff over to the Mine on weekends. A fun guy and a fun uncle to all of us kids. I still have my original hard hat that I wore in all our adventures.

Duke Clealand owned a re-cap tire store in Bishop, Calif. His brother Sam owned the Coca cola bottling plant in Bishop.
Both were WWll vets and worked for my Dad before the war. They had a few mines around the country to play with.

I don't know if the bottle structure has the same meaning for the family but here in the south it's a type of safety totem. It's thought that the colorful glass attracted the devil/spirits and they would go into the bottle and get trapped then they wouldn't bother the people living there. Very interesting to see it there. :)

Thank you for the video. Is the location a place that is open to the public? I couldn't quite tell, but you mentioned that someone had cleaned up a bit at the first cabin. I gathered that this is likely a protected park of some sort?

thanks for the great vids. I was wondering if you take security with you on these lonely journey's? I also wondered what you might do if you were bit by a snake or stung by a scorpion up in those desolate hills and mines.

I always wondered how and from where did all the whiskey in the Wild West come from. And how did they make cold beer in the desert!

There’s a post apocalyptic themed video game called Fallout New Vegas. The old abandoned ruins in the desert setting look just like it, and the currency in the story is bottle caps, so kinda ironic that you find them in abundance on the track. Lol

    I think
the furnace is used for cooking the ore to release the sulfer.
