  • The Chilcotin has been full of so many beautiful surprises. Glorious views, untold history, pristine lakes and rivers, and a surprising amount of abandoned places. Getting to explore the alpine around Perkins Peak was an amazing experience, but I wasn't going to leave without getting myself up to the summit. This was a big hike, but it is worth every single step when you get to see the views from the top. In fact, the views are spectacular the entire way up, but from the top you can even see Mt. Waddington, the highest point in British Columbia. It was an exciting moment for me to finally make my way to the peak and sign my name in the book, but after five days in the alpine, I was ready to make my way back down.
    A couple of years ago, I was told about a beautiful off grid log home, in a very remote location, that shortly after completion had been abandoned. The property still remains in the owners name, but it has not seen a visitor in nearly twenty years. The home was built almost to completion when the owner had passed away, and for whatever reason the family has not shown any interest in finishing the build. This is an absolutely beautiful home, in a world class location, but it is quickly becoming reclaimed by mother nature. I hope that the family will come and enjoy this beautiful property and bring the house back to its rightful glory.

    Very profound message at 24:03 if anybody is wondering: "It is unwise to spend too much but even worse to spend to little. If you spend too much you lose some money and that is all. If you, however, spend to little you sometimes lose everything, because the aquired item is unable to serve its intended purpose. The laws of economics forbid to acquire a high value whilst spending little money. If you choose the cheapest option you have to add the risks you are taking onto the price. And if you are willing to do that, then you have enough money to just pay for something better." This hits a little close to home since we germans really do value good quality tools, so it makes sense the gentleman who built these structures would agree.

    That washing machine looks exactly like the one we had when we lived up north. It doesn't dry the clothes. You wash on one side and transfer the clothes to the other side to spin them out. Then we dried them on a clothes line.
    What a shame that such a beautiful place and so much effort and hard work has gone into it and now will just rot away.

    Amazing video. Born and raised in BC and living in the Cariboo I am always intrigued by the history and love seeing old homesteads still standing. These buildings were in great shape. People commenting on how the family could let this place rot away , it is probably because being back in Germany they have no idea what this man built , never traveling to see it and to them it was just a pipe dream of the family member. I thought your other video a few weeks ago exploring that old mine site and air strip was the best, now this tops that one, at least to me. Thanks to you we can all appreciate things none of us will ever see and off the beaten path, thanks again Dustin . 👍👍

    • @mradventurer8104
      @mradventurer8104 Před 9 měsíci +2

      Yes nice video but I am not sure about the pipe dream idea. Descendants who inherit usually want to get the property to use it or sell it to get money from it. Just to let a property sit without using it could be because the descendants don't have the energy/health to deal with it or maybe it was not mentioned in the will? Or if the descendants are very wealthy themselves so they can't be bothered to deal with a small cabin. Or the property had to be vacated by law (for it being to big e.g.) as someone mentioned in the comments for example. I think we can just guess but reality could be different from what we guess ;)

    • @bcpioneer59
      @bcpioneer59 Před 9 měsíci +2

      @@mradventurer8104 Well not many people would even consider to venture 8000 kms to see a remote property across the planet. Even though they might have inherited it, does not mean it has value to them. This was one mans vision and dream to build this home site for his DREAMS, and as we know not all or even many want the same things we want. The inconvenience of globe trotting for many is out of the question and to go remote off grid is even less of a possibility . Living here in BC I have never once heard of land having to be vacated by any laws unless there was a forest fire or s chemical hazard , but that is not the case here. Either way it is a shame to see this waste away.

    The Chilcotin is very familiar country to me. My family traveled to B.C. every year for at least two weeks. I was born in October of 1950 and my first trip to B.C. was July 1st, 1951. Ive probably seen more of B.C. from sitting on a bale of hay in the back of an old 1952 Ford F-1 pickup than most Canadians ever have. We bought 50 acres at Riske Creek in 1968 and I my first log home in July of 1969 when I was 19. I've been designing and building handcrafted log homes for over 50 years and it all started right there in the Chilcotin. Great memories. Now that I'm living in Central Sweden I may never get back there. The memories will stay with me for many more years. Thanks for showing us this on video. Good Stuff!

    Another great video Dustin! The mountain intro was spectacular. I translated the german poster hanging on the wall and this is the translation:
    It is unwise to pay too much, but it is even worse to pay too little. If you overpay, you lose some money, that's all. On the other hand, if you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the item you bought cannot perform its intended task. The law of economics forbids getting a lot of value for little money. If you accept the lowest bidder, you must add something for the risk you run. And when you do that, you'll have enough money to pay for something better.
    You have been wanting to check this one off the list for a couple years you said. The universe has a funny way of making sure you end up in the right place at the right time.
    As always, thank you for taking us along on another beautiful adventure :)

  • @mausland
    @mausland Před 9 měsíci +6

    Your cinematography is always beautiful. I'm curious how many times you are traveling and have to turn around and go back so you can set up one of your awesome drone shots?
    Also the saying on the wall was German. Translated: It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay
    too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will
    have enough to pay for something better.

    You can just imagine all the work that went into building these cabins, in a remote location where every manufactured item and tool had to be packed in. All that hard work but no-one to carry on when the initiator was no-longer able to carry on with the project. Nature pretty quickly reclaims what we mere mortals attempt construct. Log cabins always look nice, but never seem capable of keeping out the rodents...or the Water which eventually consume the structure.

    My grandmother used to have a washing machine just like that. You could hook it up to a standard kitchen sink spigot. You filled it by hand on the wringer side, then let it agitate for awhile. Grandma used to wash the lightly-soiled to the most-soiled items using the same wash water. Each load would be taken out of the wash water by hand, then spun out in the other side which drained into the kitchen sink. When you were all done, you would drain the wash side out into the kitchen sink and roll the unit back into a corner of the kitchen, usually covered with a hand-stitched needlework covering.

    You're right... it is a washing machine called a "twin tub". You wash on the left and spin dry on the right. It doesn't get it completely dry, but dry enough that it will generally air dry in a few minutes once you hang it. If you use it outside... and use non-toxic soap... you can water the garden with the "used" water.

    Thank you Dustin. Your photography is just remarkable. Loving your new adventures. It's so nice to see different areas of BC. I wonder if the German gentleman lived in the smaller cabin while he was building the larger unfinished one?? Such a lovely property. Blessings and safe journeys.

    Beautiful truck Justin. Holding up well l presume. Engine sounds great. Nice work. Taking you where you would not normally go wirh your previous rig. That was a hotel on wheels and more costly to repair. Truck is probably more cost effective in the long run. By the looks of it in these last two videos it handles exceptionally well on steep grades.
    Spectacular drone shots taking in areas where most of us would not travel too. A little lonely at the top of the ridge but a very rewarding view. Nice cabins located in a peaceful place. Thank you for sharing. Cheers.

    My dad and Uncle spent a summer in the 70s building a log cabin home in Burns Lake where my uncle subsequently lived for ~20 years. My uncle built another one which he moved into when I was younger and I loved visiting it (and it was quite luxurious two stories!). ❤❤❤

    As always, this was a terrific and beautiful cinematic adventure. I like that you don't disclose the locations for many of your adventures, so that they stay undamaged by humans. Nature, and it's critters, will do their things, but humans won't deface them as nature is reclaiming them. Thanks for the fun!
