Jude is a breath taking album full of lovely songs. Well done Julian. Your parents must be very proud of you. Julian does other things as well as music. I believe for him the best is yet to come. I would so love to meet him.
The song, Hey Jude, has really meant the world to Julian over the years. When he got older he really appreciated the sentiment behind the real inspiration. The fact that somebody really had a heart for him like that, feeling the need to console him over his parents separation was something that he took seriously. I see the album's title as a way of saying thank you.
He said on The Rockonteuars podcast that it was all of that...saying thank you, and also making peace with some much of his family beginnings. Julian is a fine artist and musician in his own right. So amazing that he managed to survive the traumas of his childhood and somehow come out being a fine musician and having some hits is pretty amazing and rare. And, to me, one of my favorite love songs ever is by...Sean Ono Lennon... "Parachute," it's the best song I've ever heard describing that kind of love where you love too fast, lol, before you know if the other person meets your armour with the same level of...level. I love that Julian offered and was Sean's Roadie on a tour in order to get to know his brother better and form a relationship. Julian is a truly special person in his own write. ;-)
Photograph Smile was an amazing album. He sounded like he had a lot of fun recording it. Everything Changes is really good as the Acoustic version. Help Yourself was also really good.
I feel that this is his best effort ever and to be honest I think it's outstanding!!!! He will never get any radio AirPlay unfortunately, but I think the people at the Grammys should give it a listen I really think it's that good 😀
In all honesty, Julian is the single MOST talented of ALL of the Beatle kids. Period. Everything Changes is a little bit of a masterpiece, Valotte and Photograph Smile are clearly well-thought out albums full of pure talent. I'm more surprised he didn't go further. He deserved much more than he got.
Everything Changes is great, but I'm a bit disappointed that Jude sounds so similar. I love him to bits, he's a great guy, but this particular groove is in danger of becoming a rut.
@@davecostello560 I love Everything Changes, it had more psychedelic elements than Jude. That being said I find the songs on Jude to be a bit more confident sounding.
I bought Vallotte when it was released also saw his tour that year..I’m missing a couple of cds by him.. I preordered this one from his website still waiting on it..
Joe, I listened to his album, it is I think a masterpiece, this is so much meaning and thought, Julian is fantastic, what he has put into this album is perfect, maybe it’s his life what he has been through, I have been Julius’s fan from day one, always look forward to what he does, Joe do know or heard anything about touring? My Friend, TakeCare, BeSafe, I’ll see you on the next one, Steve
Haven't watched your full review yet but... Heard it on Spotify and thought it sounded great. My favorite of the Beatles children who do music though is Sean Lennon still, love his two albums with Les Claypool but it seems all of the Beatles kids have talent.
I emailed Julian almost 2 years ago, asking him to make a new album, so I'm glad he took my advice. I hope he gave Paul credit for the song title "Freedom" and the line, "love never dies". You were right when you said he tends to imitate other people - there are some interviews in which Julian seems to be imitating Paul's speaking voice.
I've had a few Julian records over the years, there was a Vh1 cd best of collection from like twenty years ago which is my go to listen for him. Might have to check this one out, good review.
I thought the album was fantastic. I'm complete with Julians discography. His music is worth listening to and collecting. Help Yourself album from 1991 was a big success in Australia, and Saltwater went to number 1.
I think Julian has a unique approach to his creativity. I feel he has grown more and more into his own identity with each album. I like it very much. Well done Jules!
Julian recorded a song for the soundtrack to the film, "Mr. Holland's Opus", and I thought his voice sounded different there. In all honesty, I didn't even know it was him until about a year ago. The name of the track is, "Cole's Song".
I love this album. I've heard it 3 times all ready. I agree with you're thoughts on it. Julians first 3 albums were my favorites as well. Thanks for the review.
One thing that I found interesting: News about the album being released was in John Lennon's instagram. Guessing if this has any relationship with the fact that Sean Lennon is taking more control over things. Julian and Sean are really close from what I could see in some videos of them.
A major personal crisis distracted me from even being aware that he had a new album out, something that never happens as it pertains to Beatles related stuff, so i'm glad you did this review, so now I know, and I can get it and give it a new listen myself. Thanks as always! Glad you got that haircut! Looks good! : > )
I adore this album, I streamed it on Spotify and the vinyl is absolute top of my Xmas list this year. Julian is underrated, you can tell he’s Lennon’s boy, but at the same time, it has his own unique personality and flare to his music..my favorite song is The Lucky Ones, that one especially at least to me is full of energy that you could imagine John writing, but again with Julian’s own touch. Idk how to describe Im bad at that sorry, but really encouraging people to check this album out….you wont be disappointed
Thanks for the review Joe! I know Julian has stated this will be his final album and it sounds like he is going out on a high note. Definitely check out Photograph Smile …..some very Beatleesque songs including Day After Day and I Don’t Wanna Know….take care
But on a serious note - I'll have to get this one. I have all Julian's album in some form or the other and they're really all pretty good. He does what he wants to do and doesn't try to fit into any modern bag. He does albums at his own pace and releases them when he feels they're ready. And they seem to get better every time. I'm glad he took time off between the releases as to not regurgitate the same material. Hard to believe he's almost 60. Damn does time fly. Anyway - thanx for the honest and respectful review. Julian knows his age and he does his work for himself and others who will understand and feel the same. Not that he does old people music - no - but it's not BS money-grab for the charts and teeny boppers. His talent stands up. Well written music and executed just as well in the studio. Look forward to getting this release. Take care, Joe.
Okay … just got a recommendation for this video. Really glad it showed up in my feed 😊 Great review. That said, I need to know where that record store is!
Yeah, Always dug Jude. I only have a couple, but do enjoy most songs I've heard. John's voice I also hear, and Julian is a great son, man. I also will have to purchase his new album, Jude.....thanks for the review, Mr.Mayo!.......🍁
I really enjoyed this album. I think this is Julian’s most honest and stripped down album. By stripped down I mean I think he’s really letting out a lot of emotions that were possibly hidden for some years. I always admired his soft yet dreamy style as you put it. Stay is my favorite track as it sums up that style perfectly. The last song I thought was ok. Sort of out of place lol. But it’s ok. Overall a beautiful album. Perhaps his best work. Great review!!!!! Thx.
I always liked Julian's song Salt Water looking forward to hearing his album. I love albums like l said on your chat they look so much better than a CD.
Both Julian and Sean are great artists. I really enjoyed Julian’s music back in the mid-1980’s. I was also lucky to see Sean and his band in concert, Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, back in 2014. Absolutely fantastic. He even covered a Syd Barrett tune.
Hello ! I'm happy to see such good reviews on this album . I've missed his last couple LPs , only because they always seem hard for me to get . My favourite has to be Help Yourself . If you listen to only one , make sure it's that one . Thanks for the review !
Thanks for this review, Joe. I've been on the fence about this one; I haven't really listened to much of Julian's stuff after Valotte but I'll confess the title and cover made me curious about this one. It sounds interesting, I'm going to check it out.
IMO, Photograph Smile remains his best work. I listened to this album a few days ago and what struck me was how mellow the songs are. A few uptempo numbers would have added a little more variation, but a good album nevertheless.
Hey Joe, Julian’s albums, Photograph Smile & Help Yourself are really solid works with some great songs, perhaps the best in his catalogue writing wise. I’ve not yet heard the new album.
Julian might have John’s singing voice but their personalities are worlds apart. John was a very funny guy ……Julian not so much. I’m anxious to hear this new album
Wow... didn't know he had a new LP out. I must check it out. I went to a Virgin Mega syore Record Shop signing of his way back in 1989 in Melbourne Australia. The giant record shop was full to overflowing and he needed lots of security to help keep the masses at bay. I took some photos that day.
6:50 - It's pronounced Guy-a (ironic, since Gaia is some sort of goddess...not completely into it, but I hear things). Anyway,, I sampledit just now on I tunes and while I can see where you're coming from, that it's not really a slam-dunk album closer, it should have been somewhere in the middle of the album, I have to say it's beautiful. It gave me the sensation of watching a French musical (Umbrellas of Cherbourg, anybody?) 😃 It was awesome that you went out and got the vinyl, I hope it wasn't very expensive (putting away for Revolver). Good video as always, look forward to the next one.
This album was really good I listened to it for weeks now and I absolutely think there fantastic songs a lot of emotion which I like in his song writings.
Seems to be a lot of Beatle songs name checked. The opening riff to every little moment is a variation of Lucy in the Sky ( sounding very like Paul Weller’s ‘Sunflower’ riff which Weller admitted he lifted from Lucy. I note the song ‘ How do you sleep’ is name checked and ‘Revolution mentioned in another song. I wouldn’t agree he’s trying to move away from the Beatles past. Good review
Help Yourself is a good album. The title track, Saltwater (the single which was a hit in some parts of the world), and Take Me Home are standouts on it for me. I have Photograph Smile, had it since it came out, but I still haven't heard it all the way through yet, but Day After Day is a good tune and I Don't Wanna Know was Julian's attempt at trying to sound as much like his father and the Beatles as possible as a way to get back at the critics and it's a GREAT tune. Ha. He even did a Rutles-like video for it. And I don't buy into that "Julian is the talented one" crap because I still think Sean's Friendly Fire album is an unsung masterpiece. They're BOTH talented, I think.
Julian is a truly brilliant artist, a renaissance man. This album is fantastic. He has nothing to hide, nothing to prove, and nothing to lose. His father would be proud of the man he has become.
hi joe, i only own the valotte album which i got when it first came out and did enjoy it. i never really followed his career but from your review of his newest release i would be willing to give it a listen, so i may have to go and purchase the lp or cd and hopefully it will be an enjoyable listen, thanks for sharing, rob
Julian is a good singer and has a distinct sound to his vocals. However, I do not think he sounds like John at all. If you take away his last name and do not know who his father was, you may not associate his vocals with John's. If you compare his vocals on "Stand by Me" and "Imagine" with John's, they do not sound the same.
I agree. He has a very softer sound to his voice. I don’t know how to describe it… But I don’t think he sounds like John. When he was younger, I think he sounded more like John. But now that he’s older, he doesn’t really sound like that anymore. I’m not saying his voice is bad, I’m just saying he doesn’t sound like John.
I have several Julian albums going back to Valotte in 1984. But over the years his albums have seemed to be a little too mellow for me. And now you're saying this one really doesn't contain any good rock and roll. I don't know, I may try it out and Sample it. And if it's really great I may plunk down the money to get a copy. I wish Julian would kind of back off the melancholy/ mellow stuff and rock out a little bit. He's done it from time to time over the years and he's good at it. Thanks. Cheers Matt
Check out Photograph Smile, the track "I don't wanna know".....Beatles, Beatles, Beatles! Check out the video for it on You tube! To ME, it's Julian's best song!!!! Great video too!
Dreamy, spacey, appealing. Sounds like a winner! Every Little Moment was apparently released five months ago, and we're just hearing it now? Something ain't right, it could have been a nice summertime song.
I’ve stuck with Julian since his very first album ( also lucky enough to have seen him Live @ Festival Hall Melbourne….. from Photograph Smile onwards Julian has really hit the Mark…. Everything Changes what a fantastic album in my opinion of course and I already Love Jude …. Sometimes you need something slightly different asa chill out…..I agree he should have been bigger….. my favourite track is Breathe….. you should look at Just For You from Everything Changes… great song….. also you might know Julian was born John and recently switched his name from John Charles Julian…. To Julian Charles John…. Hence reclaiming Jules….great review Thanks…👍🇦🇺.
I have to say it is a very fine album by Julian. I have played the CD all week in the car! I agree Joe the last song on the album is the weakest by far.
Valotte, Help Yourself and Photograph Smile are great. The others have some good songs on them too. However, Everything Changes disappointed me in how it was wall to wall ballads. I would only bite on Jude if I found out it had a rocker like OK For You, Imaginary Lines or I Don't Wanna Know.
so proud of the man he has become he had alot difficulties and overcome them thank god you said i hated that french talk that woman he goes on and on about i hated and i felt it didnt belong there it makes me sick listening to some french woman he gets goosebooses over , but i liked the other songs good good work
Gaia means land or earth and in Greek mythology ancestral mother. The women is speaking in French. It is a good track. The album is very good. The music is very layered. It feels like Nine In Nails meets Billy Joel in his later work. The production is excellent. It also feels like the final work of David Bowie. Not many people are making music like this. It has a feel of Brian Eno and Prog Rock. It has the feel of Peter Gabriel and the mood scape of Radio Head. He sets a mood. It is a work of a mature artist.
Photograph Smile would have been a hit if Julian's last name wasnt Lennon...Day after Day should have been a #1 single..that album is awesome if your a fan you need to listen to it...its a great album
It's good. Julian still sounds good for being in his fifties. I still think his best music for me is photograph smile. A lot of the songs are great. He really sounds like John on alot of songs in this album. If you haven't heard it? Check it out.
I bought the version with the signed lithograph. I don't know what that means. Is it personally signed or......?? Good to know that it passes your listening test. 😁
This Album dose look like a god one!! I am still on the Fence on gating it or not lol. But with you showing it and talking about it. It just might happen :). I hope that all is well and see you later😁

I am a bit disappointed in this new Julian album. Past albums have had a nice mix of up numbers and ballads. This is almost 100% ballads. To many piano based ballads. I have listened to it three times now and I just don't think it will hold in my collection up like earlier albums or "Help Yourself" and "Photograph Smile". Only time will tell.
Have to say I've been seeing him promote it on Facebook and it did look interesting, after your review I'm going to give it a listen. I saw online the photo of him on the cover was taken by May Pang in 1974, thought that was interesting.
I find Jude to be a brilliant album. I love the majority of the songs. The final song was well thought through but, I don't think the three voices work well together. Overall, I love the album/CD and listened to it many times already however, I am not a big fan of the last song Gaia. It is a great concept but it doesn't for me as a song on this compilation.
He cannot deny who he is. He should embrace it. People are just haters these days. The initial listen sounds very well produced and great quality. He lacks great hooks. That's the simple reason he is not a star.

But now that he’s older, he doesn’t really sound like that anymore. I’m not saying his voice is bad, I’m just saying he doesn’t sound like John.
Just thought I'd mention that The White Feather Foundation is his "favorite" charity because he's the founder of it. That's a "goosebumps" story.
Yes, thanks.
Thanks. Cheers Matt
Sample first!!!!!!
Check out Photograph Smile, the track "I don't wanna know".....Beatles, Beatles, Beatles! Check out the video for it on You tube! To ME, it's Julian's best song!!!! Great video too!
Sounded more like the Rutles to me than the Beatles.
Dreamy, spacey, appealing. Sounds like a winner! Every Little Moment was apparently released five months ago,
and we're just hearing it now? Something ain't right, it could have been a nice summertime song.
Yeah, it’s been on iTunes for a while now.
Julian and Sean Lennon should team up as a duo. They're already close friends and brothers so why not.
Ed Sheehan suggested calling it "Dude."
I felt the same way about "Every little Moment".. great song. The highlight of the album..
I have to say it is a very fine album by Julian. I have played the CD all week in the car! I agree Joe the last song on the album is the weakest by far.
I wish I still had a cd player in the car. 😞
Valotte, Help Yourself and Photograph Smile are great. The others have some good songs on them too. However, Everything Changes disappointed me in how it was wall to wall ballads. I would only bite on Jude if I found out it had a rocker like OK For You, Imaginary Lines or I Don't Wanna Know.
so proud of the man he has become he had alot difficulties and overcome them thank god you said i hated that french talk that woman he goes on and on about i hated and i felt it didnt belong there it makes me sick listening to some french woman he gets goosebooses over , but i liked the other songs good good work
Thanks for your honest observation
Agree with your opinion with the disc/LP. The last track is the only throw away on the recording.
So unfortunate that this is not promoted enough.
Good review on Jude by Julian I will get the LP nice hair cut Beatles 1962
It is said Julian and Sean and dhani. And Ringo Starr will be making in album in 2024
The album sounds good so far especially love don’t let me down ! The gatefold pic is a Nod to Death of Chatterton by Henry Wallis might be wrong 😑
This Album dose look like a god one!! I am still on the Fence on gating it or not lol. But with you showing it and talking about it. It just might happen :). I hope that all is well and see you later😁
Good luck!
@@MeanMrMayo Thanks🤑
Gaia rhymes with the word Maya. It’s a name for our planet. Seems Julian write about that.
Love your Work.If you ever get down to Aus, I'll show you around Adelaides Best s/h Record shops.
Thanks
I got it on cd and vinyl. I really like it. I listened to it all night.tonights going to be patient number nine by Ozzy.
Ozzy's new album is autotuned to death. I can't stand it. Ordinary Man was better as was 13 with Black Sabbath.
@@danerd8978 I know NBC screwed him on the halftime show. So I watched it on you tube.it sounded to good to be real. I'm pretty sure he was using tracks.but I can forgive him because of his health problems.im a big Jeff Beck and Eric fan and th e others also
I am a bit disappointed in this new Julian album. Past albums have had a nice mix of up numbers and ballads. This is almost 100% ballads. To many piano based ballads. I have listened to it three times now and I just don't think it will hold in my collection up like earlier albums or "Help Yourself" and "Photograph Smile". Only time will tell.
🎉beautiful songs Very good album!!❤️🌟
How much that record cost?
25
His very best songs are on the debut album and a b side on one of those singles. Called. Be bop. But it wasn't included on the album
Could’ve used a few good rock songs in there. I think Julian could sing some up-tempo numbers.
❤️🙏🏼
I commented before you mentioned save me.
❤
Fascinating Julian....your enthusiasm in the created process of this gem of a song is papable and fun to watch. ❤️
Hmm. I saw the album cover in the thumbnail and thought it was a picture of Squeaky Fromme.
did you know thereis a indie exclusive on colored vinyl.
Not until now.
He cannot deny who he is. He should embrace it. People are just haters these days. The initial listen sounds very well produced and great quality. He lacks great hooks. That's the simple reason he is not a star.
Its not about the album and the review .... you got a haircut .... what did I win ???
