- Roger comments on his evergreen classic, Breakfast in America: "It's consistently one of the most popular songs in the set and it just seems to ignite a wave of joy in the audience when they hear the first chords. Never could I have imagined when I wrote this song at age 19 that it would be gaining in popularity, if that is even possible, over 40 years later. It's the playful, fun, jubilant quality that people love to hear and sing along to." ~ Roger Hodgson
Roger Hodgson, formerly of Supertramp, wrote & composed Breakfast in America, including all of the arrangements, when he was in his teens before he co-founded the band. Roger's Breakfast in America, the title track off the blockbuster album, was ruling the radio airwaves around the world in 1979. "Breakfast in America" is one of the most successful and beloved albums in all of rock history. It went on to sell over 20 million copies and still selling today. The album hit #1 in almost every country around the world & stayed at the top of the charts in many countries for a full year. Roger's other timeless classics from the album include The Logical Song, Take the Long Way Home, Child of Vision & Lord is it Mine. Roger also gave us Give a Little Bit, Dreamer, It's Raining Again, Fool's Overture, School and more. Roger was the band's chief architect & visionary when it came to arranging and producing the albums & designing the stage shows. Although Roger and Supertramp's other co-founder shared writing credit, they actually wrote & composed separately with each singing their own songs: bit.ly/1Kfgu0W

"Seeing Hodgson as a solo artist is every bit as entertaining as it was to see him as part of his former band, Supertramp. Fans expecting anything less than a full-scale night of hits and memories from this charismatic performer need not worry." ~Good Times Magazine
Roger's band consists of the following multi-talented musicians: Aaron Macdonald (Sax, Keys, Melodica, Backing Voc.) Bryan Head (Drums) David J. Carpenter (Bass, Backing Voc.) Kevin Adamson (Keys, Backing Voc.) Video filmed & edited by Wim Daans - London May 2013 - Hudba
That guy on saxophone is great. He made that solo his own.
It's a clarinet
Mark Rowley nah he’s right it’s a soprano sax
That's true. He's amazing
Yes, but still very much in the same nice gypsy jazz-style.
All that's needed is a cobra coming up out of a wicker basket to complete the vibe of that sax melody......
I took my son-in -law to see Roger a few years ago, in Annapolis,Maryland. He surprised me by buying “Meet and Greet” tickets. Having been a Supertramp fan since I was 6 years old, I couldn’t speak when I was in front of Roger! Still, it was one of the best days of my life! He is truly a gentleman!
i agree --- me too have met him -- he was so kindly and speak like i am his neighbor -- it was fantastic
KILLER BAND! They never get the props they deserve...
True!
Onde está assim?
True - no idea why.
Totally agree with all the sentiments. I was sold on the group the first time I heard the album "Breakfast in America" when it first came out. The vocals, instrumentals, beat are so uplIfting: it all comes together. There's a lot of depth to Roger, and it reflects in his songs and music. I'd put him and the group up against anyone, any genre, any era.
Should have Decided on a different, more exciting name. The songwriting is sublime. Don't forget that they are one of the original wave of bands from the British invasion of United States scene throughout the 70s, after the Beatles, where Brit bands dominated the scene E.g. Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Elton John, David Bowie, Queen,Deep purple,The who, Cream , black sabbath and then later Iron Maiden, and the new wave of 80s e.g. Duran Duran,, sex Pistols, Phil Collins, Genesis, Depeche Mode, Et cetera.
There wasn't a lot of room for other successful bands, and small details, were vital especially, if you want from the US, e.g.Intensiity of touring, and marketing Capability of your record label
I just love his backing musicians having the time of their lives behind him. The saxofonists British impression is hilarious!

So so sorry for the loss of your beloved Bucky. I know pain. I am Sonya, Alan's wife. Alan died in front of me eleven weeks ago of a massive heart attack. How i adored that man from northern England with all my heart for 32 years. Your brother walks with you always. What memories you share. And one day you will be embraced for all eternity.

My brother is 16 I'm going to play this for him on a roadtrip :) memories shared over good music are wonderful
Roger Hodgson is an absolute treasure. He has such an intimate rapport with his audience, and the joy and thrill he still gets from discussing his songs is a delight to behold. Hope you keep performing for many more years, Rog!
He's about as nice as a person can be and still absolutely kills it on stage.

My friend Raymond loved this song. He passed away today at only 52. I'll miss him so much. I'm crying listening to this.
Taking me back to 1979! Just turned 16, got my drivers license...bought this album...Great music! Thank you, Roger
Me too at 16 back in 79, days were so good back then.
I LOVED when he said “Always felt there should be more.” And motioned to the saxophonist. I love this song, and whenever it ends I always think there was more! So getting just that little bit makes me so happy!
This song makes me feel better when i hear it cose it leads me to my youngest age and reminds me a lot of old friends i had met before i miss all those people now ❤️

That amazing night at the Royal Albert Hall in London!, I had the great privilege of being present during this show, a magical atmosphere, a really special connection. Still remember nitidamente happy faces of all viewers, and how to sing and dance with Roger during the show that night. This song highlights the youth of our hearts, the adventure of life.
Although I'm sure seeing Roger in the Royal Albert Hall is amazing . . equally AMAZING is seeing him play live anywhere! I have been lucky enough to see him 7 times over the past couple years and everytime is wonderful! You feel as if he is only singing to you! . . . and the last time i saw him, he dedicated "lovers in the wind" to me and my family! priceless!
Que suerte la tuya Candido,.....
Well put Candido
AFORTUNADO
Roger Hodgson what a sweet; warm; genuine and big hearted man! ♥️😍♥️😍♥️
"Always felt too short"
True, but dosen't make this song any less epic
Always the same clear voice Roger, that's great, go ahead
Many things to love here - Roger's beaming smile, the audience throwing around red heart balloons, an upbeat and body-swaying tune - and to think Roger wrote it in his teens, even before the days of Supertramp!
This guy is so talented and he knew how to write music and had a great band
conserva su misma voz ese señor, pocos como él, muchos ya no cantan igual con los años, lo admiro muchisimo

A great performance of a classic song.
Such a Great Stage Show. Only Roger can Write such Great Music that stands the test of time, And perform it like he does Thank You Roger.... Sir David
For sure. I would add David Gilmore and Roger Watters to that list....
You know you're a bad-ass when you can work a tuba into your rock song and it's still awesome.
Supertramp - that's where the magicians of the seven notes are! Just an awesome composition!
Have hit replay on this about 15 times so far
AECEntertainment I love America

This guy is so underrated. He's done so much in the music industry and goes unaccounted for it.
Man, I miss real music like this! Those were the great old days! Thank you Roger and Supertramp!
If ELO,Supertramp had a concert together, that would be one hell of a concert....
Yes that would be amazing.
Hello Everette..

Yes, Roger is still touring around the world, full steam! Lots of energy, joy, and his unforgettable and unique voice! Their timeless songs always impress the audience! Adding to this, the performance of his famous hits are technically better now; and furthermore, Roger is accompanied by a fantastic band, technically perfect!

Timeless, irreplaceable, inspirational, romantic. Simply Super. Simply Supertramp...
One of my dreams is to see Roger Hodgson live ! Been listenning since 1993 .Fingers crossed that this dream comes true one day !
You can never get enough of this wonderful song and wonderful singer/composer. Go Roger
Isn't it awesome that a young boy once wrote such a sweet song, expressing his dreams, and some time after, all his dreams became true?. Only a true gifted man like Roger can get this success. Because, yes, dreams become true if you strongly believe in them
I love this video, I was there at RAH, it was one of the most terrific shows I've ever lived! It was magic all of us together rising up our balloons and singing along and clapping and enjoying as one!

Hi, Roger. My name is Roger, also. Breakfast in America was the first record I buy when I was a teenager. I was in love with all songs of the album, and today I think I'm still in love with.
Best wishes from Valladolid, Spain. Greetings.
You can just tell Roger loves performing by the absolute joy on his face during the entire performance. His voice is still so strong as well. The high notes don't even seem to be a challenge like they would be for so many others.
No me canso de escucharlo, es muy gratificante escucharlo, literalmente música para mis oídos.
What a class act.
It really is isn't it
I'm young, just 28, heard this song, searched a little to learn more about it, you wrote that said 40 years ago, and now, 40 years later, I'm listening to this and enjoy it.
Maybe in 100 years, this song, like other legendary songs from 60s to 80s, will still be listen by some people.
I like " It's raining again " too, and this song fit well with my country, it's raining 200+ days per year in Belgium.
I'm young too, just 19, and even I know this comment is too long and erroneous
come to Scotland and you wil find out what raining is.
Hahaha, yes ! Even worse :D
Jérémy Soetens logical is good too.
He made me cry with this song, because I've came back to my chilhood. I was 11 when I listened it on and on and on. I felt in love with this song from the first time
Roger knows how to entertain ... should be in the Rock and Roll hall of fame, along with Supertramp.
Wonderful voice!

Hey Roger,These songs never age. Thank You 🙏👍🇦🇺
Just couldn't help singing along, loved it, great song that really is relative for many generations, I'm just thankful it was mine that grew with Roger's musical brilliance.
After all these years he still sounds tops. I love this video and this song. Roger is one my all time favorite artists. His songs always touch a special place in my heart; maybe it's because I can feel how much of himself he puts into it.

This song takes me back to my youth a wonderful, wonderful time, if only I had been more aware then of how important a time of my life it was, ah hind sight!
His voice has held up well over the years.
Yeah, it really has. I don't know if he ever smoked or did anything that hurt his voice like many other musicians, but the quality of his voice at his age makes me think he didn't.
What a great song!! Adolescence, school books under his arm and ... to feel important and higher ... the LP Breakfast in America. What fond memories! Roger touches our heart, yesterday, today and forever. Thanks Roger for your creations are now spoiled for us. The blonde girl from Barcelona ....
I just saw him live yesterday. The guy is amazing, he tried to speak our language, didn't want to leave the stage and i live in a small ass town i still cant believe it.

Thanks to Roger, and Supertramp was a very great group, I still love these old songs.
THIS song will always recall my travel through the USA in 1979. Three months Breakfast in America..
This takes me back I am now 76 and remember this when I was young and being English I do get it!! thanks
Last time I heard this song was 1982 in Beirut, Lebanon. It was Christmas Day . A Lebanese band played this song. It was a very nice gesture to us who were a long way from home in an impossible situation. Thank you.. I have never
forgotten.
The song is about a young dreamer who thinks that by going to America he will live a better life than what he has. He's unsatisfied with his girlfriend and thinks that he will find a better one in California because of the stereotype of the California model/actress/fun-lover that he has of that place. He asks his mother for kippers so that he can feel like a Texas millionaire when in reality kippers are considered lower-class fare, but in his family they're a treat. This shows that he doesn't understand his own world enough to even know what he should be striving for. He calls himself a winner (he wants to make himself seem worthy of the American dream), a sinner (maybe because he is unfaithful to his girlfriend if by thought alone), "Do you want my autograph?" (A young Roger dreaming of stardom while writing this song and tying it to the American dream), I'm a loser, what a joker" (the songwriter realizes how silly he is to dream in this way when he is only a nameless teenager). Then the teenager guards the same girlfriend, that he isn't satisfied with, jealously as he realizes that she's all he's got until he can make it to America to fulfill his dreams.
Thank you for the interpretation
Think you might be overthinking it a bit. Your explanation got more words than the song. Chill out and enjoy
+TonyP1234 I like what you think. However, you didn't write the song. Quit trying to make it your own!!
+Lacey Chapman it's not yours, either. Stop trying to control its interpretation!
+Lacey Chapman poor and overwrought interpretation of verse is the opiate of the bored and boring
I miss you, Supertramp.
Realmente se puede disfrutar de la música con Hodgson. Espectacular el sonido del saxo soprano y con la improvisación de un maestro hizo un segundo solo al final. Máximos respetos al grupo.
That was AWESOME! ! ! Man Roger's voice still sounds amazing! ! ! I sure hope he comes to Buffalo Ny!
Hi ~ You will be pleased to know that Roger will be coming to Niagara Falls on November 7! You can find out more info on Roger's tour page - www.rogerhodgson.com/documents/tour.html. We hope to see you there!

I LOVE IT Breakfast in America !!!
Roger was always my favorite member of the band. When he left Supertramp, the band just went down hill. I realize that they are still together and touring without Roger (or were the last that I had heard) it is just not the same. Roger, on the other hand, has still got it going on.
im 58 and remember this well from my teens plus dreamer and logical song,,great songs pity music has changed so much from those days

When I was in college, I was listening to this song on the radio with some friends in the dorm room. This girl among the friends said "What's this crap? What the hell is this?" I don't talk to her anymore.

hello, how are you doing it is nice meeting you here.
I've always loved the song, keyboard - but have never really looked at the lyrics before. This is a great song. I love the soprano sax and all of the instrumentals! This song is really cool! Love it!
+Cynthia Hamil seems like me too, never looked at the lyrics before - to me this song always sounded so jumpy, too bad to get up and dance. Somehow I have to admit that does not change with this, either
True love way
Cynthia, you're in America. So perhaps you don't realize the picture this lyrics paints, because you're in it. It's a masterpiece.
It sounded like a tourist's impression of Americans.
