First time watching Good Will Hunting and I'm glad I did. I honestly cannot explain how happy this movie made my heart. Good Will Hunting was food for my soul. Everything from their connection to the conversations about trauma, relationships, and love. Perfection! This is the first Robin Williams movie I've ever seen and I love this man so much. The bond between them and their chemistry was so enjoyable. while editing this video I was smiling the whole time because I got to watch the movie again and watch my reaction to it in real-time (one of the benefits of watching a good movie and also editing it) My goodness, thanks to everyone who recommended and voted for this movie. I love Good Will Hunting sooooo much! Thanks for watching. Cheers! #goodwillhuntingreaction #goodwillhunting #firsttimewatchinggoodwillhunting

Will Hunting (Matt Damon) has a genius-level IQ but chooses to work as a janitor at MIT. When he solves a difficult graduate-level math problem, his talents are discovered by Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard), who decides to help the misguided youth reach his potential. Thank you for mentioning to "check up on your happy friends". I am a behavioral health professional. One of the most common symptoms that a person will soon attempt s*icide, is a sudden, noticeable, and drastic change in attitude, affect, sociability, rate of speech and movement, and levels of anxiety from slow, isolated, "empty" or "blank" and anxious, to faster, more talkative and outgoing, less anxious, more cheerful, and more active. They may start giving things away as "gifts". They might clean their houses from top to bottom. These are all signs that we should NOT be applauding, but instead be on very high alert, because this person has made preparations and is relieved that they will soon no longer have to suffer. Growth happens slowly and painfully. If it's too fast and too drastic, your friend or family member is likely in serious danger.

The Unabomber scene - Sean and Gerry dueling in the bar - is my favorite.
It encapsulates the entire dilemma of Will Hunting and his life.
Gerry is trying to save Will the math genius. Sean is trying to save Will the man.
Gerry wants Sean to "fix" Will as a mechanic would fix a car. Sean wants to heal Will's fractured soul.

Yes, they're both father figures that actually love Will and want to help him. Gerry just does it in the only way he understands, projecting himself onto Will which most parents do. It's not for lack of love, but just lack of knowing any better.

Part of the story is based on a real life of George Dantzig.
He came to class late one day and assumed the 2 problems on the board were the homework assignment. He solved both problems (noting that they were pretty challenging).
His professor was dumbfounded. George had just solved 2 of the most famous unsolved problems in Statistics.
So, in this case, the reality is even more amazing than the movie - the problems in the movie were not "unsolved by anyone" they were simply difficult.

The best part of this film is the relationships. They are crafted so lovingly. Will and Sean and the way they help each other through their trauma. Will and Skylar and the silly little scenes (like the first kiss) that sound on paper like they'd never work, but when watched feel so personal and intimate. It builds the relationship so much faster when you see them doing the weird shit you remember doing with your significant other 16 years ago. But not just that but Sean and Gerald, Will and his friends. The character building is immaculate.
The other great point is there is no villain. Most films would have the problem be mathematical. Will overcomes his demons with Sean's help. Proves the mean professor wrong and breaks the equation and wins the girl as reward. In this film everyone just wants what's best for Will. As misguided as Gerald is he ultimately isn't looking for vicarious success through him. He just wants to help Will be more than Gerald can be. The villain ultimately is Will himself. The low is Will trying to push all of the help away. The triumph is Will not winning the girl but taking the risk in trying to win the girl. That there is why this film is perfect. No cartoonish evil. No calamitous event. Just a real person interacting with real people

This film started a filming renaissance in Massachusetts. It put Damon and Affleck on the map. It made the Boston Accent cool. It’s amazing screenplay (both with dialogue and story telling), paired with great direction, and arguably Robin Williams’ (God rest his soul) best acting performances of his career, makes an amazing film. Frank, love your reactions. I enjoy your thoughtful commentary, your personal stories as relatable connections to what you are watching, and your voice and manner of speaking is so calming and paced. To me, the story is about Will, a young man that was abandoned and abused and never learned how to love. A man that needed a father. Sean was counterpart, a man that fell in love, got married and tragedy struck before he could become a father. Through the therapy sessions, they both realized they could learn from each other and in the end they became father and son.
Oh, and that final drive, that is I-90, the MassPike. It is an amazingly beautiful drive west of Springfield to the border with NY. A perfect way to end the movie.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck grew up together in Boston. They had big dreams and wrote and sold this script and starred in it together. Amazing talents.
Robin Williams was diagnosed with a brain disease that was shutting down his ability to speak and remember. He didn't want to slowly disappear so while he still had the ability to end the suffering he did so.

So far, I think this is my favorite one of your reactions. It really is amazing to see it play out where somebody’s soul actually takes over and gets through the technical part of the mind. Finding how the two connect is something you don’t see so beautifully done in a movie. If I remember, right, I believe Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote this movie together as their first big collaboration. Job well done. What you said about finding the right person resonates so much. My husband of eight years suffered a cardiac arrest last summer. He literally died in front of me After mowing the front yard. He collapsed right in front of me and I had to do CPR. Even EMS worked on him all the way to the hospital and after a week on a ventilator he had surgery and he came out of it OK. he had a 95% blockage we did not know about. He is 100 % his old self. Thank God for the miracle, now. we have more time together. I hope people realize not to take it for granted when they find their one true love. I never did ,but I cry more at sad movies now but that’s OK. If all the bad relationships and terrible things in my life happened, so I was trained for this one day, where I could save him, then it was worth it.

An excellent and thoughtful reaction. I wish more folks, especially other men, would get your level; being able to communicate and experience these types of stories can be very healing for those hurts we have experienced. Had to pause in the middle: You're not oversharing at all. You'd be a fantastic therapist. Yes, you have to set aside, for a moment, your own art, but think of what the world is like with how few of us can see the art latent within others? You have the gift of seeing that. I wish you all the success as a painter, but I want you to paint healing connection with clients. You absolutely have the talent for that. Just something to consider (I'm from a family of therapists and teachers). There is nothing wrong at all with just pursuing your dreams, but just maybe keep in mind your ability to connect with other minds. Maybe you'll be the next Michelangelo, or maybe you'll help her become herself (or him/himself, whatever). Very inspiring reaction. The way you relate it to your dinner conversation is pretty much exactly as Sean relates Will's life with his own loss. You have a natural talent for it. That begets no obligation, but it should be noted that it's there.

Your intense attentiveness to the stories you view is quite remarkable... I can't say I have opinions on the creative ways it's filmed or angles of shots.. I'm not built that way... however the underlying messages and interactions of personality types I fully get...
I can fully understand Will's defensiveness..protecting himself through a nonchalant devil may care attitude...even his outbursts are indicative of closeted frustrations...
When Robin threw out the therapist stereotype and approached him as two neighboring men..talk of everyday topics..not delving not personal challenges..it brought back the scene of the math professor entering Robin's classroom and the subject was on building trust...
I agree the bar dialogue with the want-a-be romeo was priceless.."How you like them apples ?"...perfect...
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck wrote this screenplay..and looking at their ages in this film.. perhaps there's a little Will Hunting in them...
Here's some films you may be interested in..
    Dead Poets Society... Robin Williams
We Bought A Zoo...Matt Damon..not as finely wrought as this one but has its merits

Robin did not suffer from depression. He died from Lewy Bodies Syndrome, a condition where the brain physically starts to eat itself. There is no cure for this disease, and none on the horizon. Robin knew that his fate was madness and a painful death, so he took the way out that would cause the least pain for his wife and family. His wife has said many times that she doesn't resent what he did at all, and that it was the only thing he could do. Not every suicide is unreasonable or selfish; sometimes life is just too hard to endure, facing an end too horrific to take, and the hand takes control over its life.

    • @mypud4068
      @mypud4068 Před 2 měsíci

Yes that’s true but he was notorious for being kind of a depressed guy, hence his cocaine addiction and his own self admission of it. Lewy body played a role but it’s an extremely progressive disease so he was struggling with depression anxiety and addiction well before that diagnosis. Did it play a factor, I would say yes but we’ll never truly know to what extent

I like that when Will said that he would like to keep in touch, Sean said that if he calls, he would call him right back. I just think that, in a way, Sean is sort of acting like a surrogate father because Will never had a real, healthy parental relationship. When you are young and venturing out in the world on our own, you kind of leave for a little while and come back and the next time you go for a little longer and so on until you feel like you can stand on your own and Sean understood that.
