    Synopsis
Young Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) is haunted by a dark secret: he is visited by ghosts. Cole is frightened by visitations from those with unresolved problems who appear from the shadows. He is too afraid to tell anyone about his anguish, except child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis). As Dr. Crowe tries to uncover the truth about Cole's supernatural abilities, the consequences for the client and therapist are a jolt that awakens them to something unexplainable.

I saw this in the movies when it 1st came out. I was utterly shocked at the discovery that Malcolm was dead. The different reactions of the people in the theater were similar to yours. A lot of people cried because although Cole gets the help he needed, the movie is still a tragedy. There is so much loss. As a side note, I couldn't get over that the actor playing Vincent is Donnie Wahlberg, who is now in Blue Bloods. A great reaction to a great movie. Thanks.

@@FrankFreezy_ This movie actually started the whole plot twist trend! I think it came out in the late 90s early 2000s. And there were of course some movies with twist endings before then, especially Alfred Hitchcock movies. Which if you haven't seen any of those you really have to watch psycho or vertigo! Those are classics of American cinema! But there wasn't plot twists all the time it wasn't a common thing. But the sixth Sense got so popular because the twist was so good that it spawned so many copycats. That's why a lot of big name movies nowadays seem like they have half done twist. Because this movie like you said the clues were there the entire time! Everything was leading up to it so when you found out he was dead the whole time everything made sense. All of those tiny details that you noticed and commented on and then forgot about all came back around and everything made sense. That's how you do a well-done twist. It's unfortunately extremely uncommon to have a well-done plot twist. A lot of directors and writers just add a random ending

I was around when this was in theaters, and it was a generally well respected unspoken rule that you didn't spoil this one. It was such a breath of fresh air to have such a powerful plot twist that most people gushed about the movie telling everyone they just had to see it.... But they didn't say more. I know there were probably plenty of exceptions. I usually don't get why most people have a problem with spoilers, when most movies are fairly predictable... but this movie is one that you just need to go into but knowing.

I love that the moment we meet Cole he’s literally running away from a brand new ghost suddenly stalking him - he runs into a church (sanctuary) and the ghost just follows him right in and sits down to chat.
When you rewatch Haley Joel Osmette’s performance is suddenly 10 times as good when you think about the layers he had to act (one for the audience that it’s just a doctor his mom’s making him see - and the deeper one that it’s a ghost).
I feel like his first line in the church is when he made a choice to finally talk to one of these ghosts.
It also adds weight to each time another person is in the room with him and Bruce and he is COMPLETELY silent.
Oh and also when you stop and think about how illogical Willis’s scenes are he falls apart. Why did he meet this kid in random public places? Why was he at the hospital with the mom listening to the doctor and then tucking Cole in at night?
It’s jarring once you see it - we are as in denial as Malcolm.

For a few years after its release, the plot twist was so famous that it was literally impossible for anyone to watch the movie with fresh eyes and be surprised by it -- EVERYONE had heard it. I'm so glad we've gotten to a point where it can surprise people again! I think one of the smartest things about this movie is that it shows you what happened to Malcolm right away and then it just skips ahead without going into detail. So for the first few minutes, you wonder, what happened, I guess he got better. But then the movie goes on, and a long time passes before the movie reveals that there are ghosts -- so long that most people have gotten caught up in the story and have forgotten that Malcolm had a near-death incident himself, so it doesn't occur to them that he might BE a ghost. All the interactions with his wife are perfectly legitimate for people feeling estranged/neglected and missing having a connection, so most people don't realize until the very end. It's incredibly effective. Love it. Thanks for the reaction!

I believe the reason Malcolm is aware of the bullet wound is because his wife Anna momentarily forgot her grief while embracing and almost kissing her friend. It left Malcolm almost aware of the fact that he's dead.
In her grief, Anna still had some denial at the loss of Malcolm; he couldn't move on while she clung to his memory and she couldn't move on while he continued to haunt her.
Most people don't really grasp what that little scene about the sapphire ring was about. Anna kept Malcolm's wedding ring like a touchstone, like something that might bring him back. When she finally literally releases it, that's when the separation process begins that frees them both from being locked together.

The scene where they show the door to the basement/his office is blocked by a table tells you so much and people are usually so shocked by the revelation you don't think about it until a couple rewatches. Basically tho, she put that table there because he was haunting the place and she would keep finding that door opened somehow, or hear it being messed with. I would love for someone skilled to write a story from his wife's perspective over the year that he died and haunted her, and what it must have been like from her end to have him finally come to terms with his death and help her heal and move on. Because she was definitely grieving him the whole movie, watching their wedding videos over and over, going to "their" restaurant on their anniversary, carrying around his wedding ring. She could feel that he was still there and couldn't let him go just like he couldn't let her go until he finally moved on. Also I feel like the guy who's been trying to date her deserves a redemption moment lmao everyone always hates him because they think he's trying to get with a married woman but he probably genuinely likes her, especially considering she's obviously in mourning from her husband's murder. That would repel a lot of people when it comes to dating.

Thanks for this comment I absolutely agree. You're the first person to appoint your thoughts and the reasons why the office door was blocked. And it makes so much sense. I think the part that made me emotional was when the reveal happened and I was hit with the realization that she's been sad and depressed this whole time because he was actually dead. All the things you mentioned that she was doing to cope and remember him. It just came crashing in. I too would absolutely love the story from her point of view. I will pay to watch that. And yes the guy she was starting to have feelings for seems like a nice guy you should definitely needed him. I'm sure but now that Malcolm is gone, she and her coworker can start something

That is real. I'm glad you have that core memory with your aunt about this movie. Yeah cole definitely suffered a lot. I can't even start to imagine how many children go through something similar to this. Obviously not the ghosts part but the part about holding the secret in. It's very sad.

I also saw this in the theater though I was on a date. My heart broke for Cole.
Although I came from a long line of people who believed or at least were okay with ghost whispering, I related to when he said "My mom doesn't look at me like I am a freak and I don't want her to".😢
I think that can be why kids don't tell their parents about a lot of things. I didn't want to tell my parents when I got bullied or add to their burdens for sending me to great schools and activities by being "weird".
Kids deal with so many scary things on their shoulders that they shouldn't have to figure out how to process alone.

    • @veggiesaremurder

One of the things I love about the directing is that WE don't see the ghosts until after Cole tells us his secret. First, we only see things through the eyes of the people around him, then we see and experience what this little boy has to deal with every single day. My heart also breaks for his mother. Imagine being a single parent, your life revolves around your only child, you know there's something terribly wrong happening to them, but they won't tell you. The whole movie, she's trying to put the pieces together but can't quite figure it out. She's working 2 jobs to provide for her son, and can't even get a full night's sleep because her son is suffering and she's having nightmares. I think the scene in the car is one of the most powerful and emotional scenes of all time. She goes from scared, to confused, to my son might be sick, to highly emotional hearing about her mother, to grateful and relieved that Cole finally told her the truth. Beautiful acting by both.

He’s only on screen for about 5 minutes, and he’s completely captivating. Love this movie. It’s soo good. I love that we in the older generation have kept the “social contract” and not spoiled the twist for everyone coming afterwards. It’s an unspoken rule. To watch this in the theater was an experience. They don't know they're dead" ... while looking a ghost in the eye who doesn't know he's a ghost. They gave away the twist of the movie in plain sight, spelling it out for the viewer, but it's so well written you don't know it's been revealed, just like Malcom doesn't realize that Cole is talking about him.

"What if this turns out to be a horror movie? I don't do so well with horror movies." I giggled with evil anticipation at that! :D Though technically, I'd call this more of a dramatic thriller than a horror, though it obviously has moments that are genuinely very frightening. And "Little Forrest" is named Haley Joel Osment, and for me he ties for best child actor of all time with Natalie Portman. He was nominated for an Oscar for this movie but didn't win, which I think was a mistake on the judging committee's part. He absolutely deserved that award for this performance. But, he lost to Michael Caine, and if you're going to lose, you could do much worse than lose to Michael Caine! :) I'm very glad you stuck with the movie even though you're not great with the horror elements because it's really such a beautiful film and pretty much mandatory viewing in my eyes.
As for your question about the twist: I did not see it coming, at all, not one bit! :D I don't know of anyone personally who actually saw the twist coming, particularly when the film first came out. I have seen younger reactors now (in their early 20's) who pick up on it, and while a lot of the commentors assume that means they're faking their reaction for views, I don't think that's it at all. This film set off a trend of twists in movies for a while, even in movies where they didn't really make sense to have and made the movies worse for it. So, my theory is that the younger audience has been exposed to more twists than we had been when this movie first came out, so they've sort of been trained to pick up on twist clues. Because twists happened in films prior to this one, of course, but this one was HUGE and packed such an emotional punch that it leaves a lasting impression.
Great reaction. Looking forward to more! If you want to see another AMAZING child actor performance, check out "Leon: the Professional." I think it was one of Natalie Portman's first major roles, and she was about 11 or so, and totally nailed it. I recommend you watch the so-called "international cut" versus the US version. The international version is "Leon: the Professional" and the US version is just "The Professional." It also stars Gary Oldman as one of his most delightfully twisted characters ever. Cheers! EDIT- I posted this on my android, and didn't realize I'd left such a long damn comment until it posted. So, sorry for giving you a novel to read! It's the writer in me ;)

I've lived in a lot of 1700-1800 era homes that have been carved up into apartments. They all have fireplaces, but very very few are working fireplaces. The chimneys break down, get clogged by soot and flammable tars, collect old birds nests, and simply crack and/or come apart. Aside from being fire hazards, the cracks leak carbon monoxide. Most old fireplaces are bricked up and even covered over by tin. Then the landlord installs radiators or electric heaters.

I wanted to point out most respectfully the difference between joy and pleasure. If you want to repeat joy, it becomes pleasure. Joy is pure, divine, whole, free from conflict and belongs to love. Pleasure is self-centered, shallow, leads to fragmentation and conflict between you and the world and belongs to fear.
I know this comment is overly dramatic, still it came to mind and I just wanted to share it in case it interests you.
BTW the key out of that conflict is being aware of your inner fears, longings, thoughts and feelings instead of pushing them away or fighting them. Be aware of your inner movements from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep. It’s the hardest thing a human being can do, but then the fragmentation will resolve and disappear and what will be left is

I loved this because I have experienced hauntings before and the thing is, if you keep an open mind and don't freak out , you get used to it. That's not to say an apparition flicking past doesn't startle me, but the knowledge they're there isn't a big deal.

They were set in the old west, outer space, in small towns, in large cities, in hillbilly backwoods, in atomic apocalypses, in the Civil War, on WWII battlefields, in Hell, in Mansions and townhouses, in basement apartments, in boarding houses, etc. The characters varied from ordinary people to the elderly to dreamers to the gifted to devils to witches to even Death himself.
Serling was well-respected for how he elevated these stories to something special. I think Shyamalan does the same. "The Sixth Sense" is NOT a ghost or horror story. "Signs" is not an alien invasion story. "The Village" is not a gothic costume drama. The "Unbreakable" trilogy is not a superhero story. That's just the genres clothing the deeper story. I just wish Shyamalan got the same recognition and respect that Serling got.

Here's a clue: "The Twilight Zone". Serling created the original weekly TV series which ran from 1959 to 1964. It stretched out further through reruns. The stories are so good, it's a favorite for rerun broadcasts.
The episodes are available on CZcams.
Serling had quite a number of fresh unknown actors in the episodes, who went on to be more well-known. People like Bill Mumy, George Takei, Charles Bronson, Robert Redford, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, James Doohan, Elizabeth Montgomery, Dennis Hopper, Julie Newmar, Robert Duvall, Cloris Leachman, and others.
In 1964 Rod Serling did a rewrite of Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" he titled "Carol for Another Christmas", set in the modern times of 1964. Incredible story.
There's a part where the Christmas Future shows a post-nuclear America run by a leader (played by Peter Sellers) under the 'Imperial ME" Party. If you want to go straight there, just put the following in the CZcams search bar:

I did not see this coming when i watched it 23 years ago and it was the most amazing twist i've ever witnessed. I am jealous of all the people who still have the opportunity to experience this for the first time and it is for the last time as well. An experience you can only have once. But the amazing thing is, after all these years and having watched this movie about 15 times since then, i still get teared up and emotionally invested every single time. So even without the suprise moment of the twist this movie still completely works. One of the best movies ever made, some of the finest acting, especially from Cole and his mom.

As a kid who loved horror movies and expecially loved the ghost centric horror, i watched this movie over and over and over.
But then i rewatched it as an adult with an 8 year old son and it feels like such a different movie. It hits so hard. Imagine being that mother. You just had a little fight about a bumble bee pendant and an hour later your little boy is obviously terrified of something, shaking, but refuses to tell you why and still has to emotional bandwidth to specify "-if youre not too mad- can i sleep in your bad tonight".
The terror, helplessness, and frustration you would feel is insane and every actor in this movie elevated it so much. Toni Collette is absolutely no exception.

I've heard so many mothers say how watching this movie after they became a parent hit so much harder. And thank you so much for sharing that. The biggest thing is that helplessness right, like knowing your baby needs something but they don't know how to ask for it. And you don't know what to do. I love how incredibly they portrayed that

. M Night Shyamalan is brilliant in his use of foreshadowing, There were hints that no one picked up on the first time watching. Cole told Malcom that a good story needs a twist. Malcom never converses with anyone else in the film. His clothes remain the same although he takes of his jacket often. The color red is used throughout the film indicating spirit activity is about to happen, like the red balloon floating up the staircase Little details easily overlooked return with a big impact. Great film.

I realize I am 4 months "late to the party," but I felt led to comment anyway. Thank you so much for such an enjoyable and insightful reaction video. I just discovered them for the first time last night and watched a few. Very fun!
I saw this movie in the theater when it FIRST came out and I was stunned. I have seen it many times since, and each time, I see something new and cry my eyes out.
Like I said, I watched some other reaction videos, but yours was definitely a favorite. Your mellow energy, sweet comments, and insightful observations are appreciated.
I believe one should try their hardest to strike a balance between meaningful work and spending quality time with family. There are times when crises occur at either work or home, altering the balance. This movie depicted a crisis for this child, which required extra time and intervention. There was also a seeming crisis in his marriage, which further complicated things. If a crisis at work is unusual, then I believe family should be understanding. If it is a pattern of work crises, and the family suffers for long periods, then adjustments should be made.
I am a pediatric and mother/baby RN, and there have been times in my career when my position was so demanding that it was cutting into important time to care for family members, not to mention myself. I had to decide what was most important.
You have to put on your own oxygen mask before you can help someone else with theirs.

I’ve watched this movie about 3 times and I hate horror movies - but it was a sadly beautiful movie. I didn’t realise till after the movie Coles mother in movie is Toni Collette, an Australian. Her accent was perfect. I’d seen her growing up in lots of things here in Aus, her American accent for the movie and being older I didn’t realise it was her.
I must watch full movie again - brilliantly written and performed and Cole, wow, a wonderful childhood actor. All writers, cast and twists in storyline were wonderful, credit to the writers and all the crew involved in the making of this movie.
