  • Today, I'm checking out the most expensive watercolor pencils I've ever owned - the Museum Aquarelles from Caran d'ache. Now, these are supposed to be lightfast, highly pigmented, and I want to see if they are worth every penny spent.

    I have Albrecht Durer, Inktense pencils and blocks, and the Museum Aquarelles. Each has their advantages. Albrecht Durer has the largest range of colors and have lots of greys. Inktense is the least lightfast, but are fantastic for underpainting, plus they can be used on fabrics. But the Museum pencils are by far my favorites. The color range is perfect for portrait and figure drawing as well as landscape. Colors are superb and always seem just right for the artwork. As they say - you get what you pay for. The Albrecht Durer are far more affordable, Museum are double the price, and Inktense are between them. The prices closely match their value to me, and how much I enjoy using them.
    The cost is only an issue when first buying them. After that replacing colors as they are used up is not a big deal. I would not recommend buying sets as you always get too many colors you rarely use. Much better to buy individual colors and put them in a pencil wrap. That helps with cost because you only buy a few at a time. Nobody needs every color at first - far better to get less colors then learn how to make the most from each color before getting a new color.

      It is definitely best to start small and build a collection as you go! I've actually used every single color in my set, but that's because I purposely try to lol

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh Před 2 lety

      @@ColorfullyOptimistic using a color once or twice is very different to those fewer colors that are indispensable in virtually every artwork. I did get my Inktense blocks in a 72 set, and then threw out the 9 lower lightfast colors. I bought the set because the tin is a better container for blocks than most alternatives. However after eliminating the lower lightfast colors I then rearranged the colors so that the ones I use the most are all in the top layer and the bottom layer is for occasional use colors.
      For pencils, however, I much prefer wraps than tins or boxes. Easy to transport and easy to use. With pencils I find I only need around 36 from each range, but they are always a different 36 to what manufacturers put in sets. They always fill sets based on the candy theory - the colors chosen are the ones that look prettiest lined up in a box but are not the ones the artist actually needs. Too many bright colors, not enough neutrals.

    Hi Kori, I had my Albrecht Durers for a couple of years and I would have bet there was no other watercolor pencil that could be as good but I kept hearing about the Museum Aquarelles, I couldn’t figure out why I hadn’t seen them when buying my AD, I love quality products so I got them, I opened them right away and swatched them…this is my opinion, the Albrecht’s melt at the drop of water but the Museum’s melt at the mention of water lol…if anyone is on the fence, listen to Kori.

    Interesting, but I think most of us would be more interested a comparison between Albrercht Durers and the Caren D'ache Supra colors. I might buy a few open stock (for backgrounds with that spread of color), but I largely color in books and on pdfs, I don't see myself needing such an expensive set which contains only 76 pencils when I could own an excellent set with 120 colors. Please, don't turn into another haul and swatch channel. I enjoy your channel largely because you take us on a coloring adventure and not a spending spree. So many channels have sold out to those affiliate links. Let's be honest, the majority of us own more art products than we can practically use. I would love you to lead colortube in the use of all the products that many people have bought because of color channels and they sit unused. Make 2022 a year of no spending and using using what we have acquired to this point. (except coloring books, we need to support artists) I may be alone in my feelings, but I'm just burned out on channels always showing something new to buy, I want channels that inspire me to color. Inspire community. Inspire a sense of wellbeing and comfort thru art.

      @UCF3KnJ0zbJs6XYP9EEq5eQA I agree with you. But so many channels go overboard. We all came to Color tube to learn to color, I just want that to be the focus of my favorite channels. I would think the stress of spending to keep one's channel going would become stressful. I have moments of impulse spending because someone tuber raved about a product and I just had to try it, have it, only to be disappointed. Kori is the one who has a series using products with ABC's, I love it. I think we need more. More emphasis on actually using what we have collected, accumulated, and horded. Talking about new products can easily be discussed during a coloring long or live stream. I totally love hearing Kori's opinions I've followed her from close to the start of her channel.

      I’m going to respectfully reply to you by recommending a content creator called Kindra (may be you’re already aware of her). That’s the name of her CZcams channel and that is the name she goes by (that could be her real name). I’ve subscribed to her because I’m interested in her no buy art supply 2022. At the moment I’m not joining her no buy, but I’m very interested to see how she manages. I color PDFs, I photocopy pages from coloring books to color, and I buy and color photopolymer and red rubber stamps. I enjoy trying out artist grade products, so I buy small quantities, even though I know I don’t need them for my purposes. I was burned out by all the stamping and crafting videos I was watching, because I was subscribed to so many companies and people, and I was constantly bombarded with videos. I unsubscribed to most companies and people so now I don’t feel burned out. Now I generally watch swatch and review videos on products I seek out, as opposed to watching every video on every product.

Since being with Kori I have learned a ton about water coloring and have watched plenty of color Along where she uses different pencils. Kori, Ithink you have a good amount of variety on your channel and I love products, if someone finds a new product, I want to hear about it and with all due respect, if you are not interested, just don’t watch that video. Hi Kori. I have both AD and the MA sets, as I do paint watercolor, and purchased them to supplement my paintings. I think if I compare the 2, the AD are more transparent than the MA s. The MA s almost seem like a gouache in some colors. I think you can also use the MA s dry as well as wet. Thanks for swatching, they were gorgeous to watch.

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  Před 2 lety +1

      I don't know if I'd use the MAs soft. They are soft in texture, but I think I'd be better off using another lightfast pencil over the dried watercolor if I needed the shading. Just because they don't blend the same or have the same texture.

    I love these pencils and I also love faber castell albrecht durer. I wish I could post a picture. I got a small set of each and painted a cardinal (the exact same one) side by side to compare them and see which I preferred. The caran dache are not as pigmented and colorful as the albrecht durer. I used the exact same paper (100% cotton) and I painted them as much as I could the same. They are both beautiful and I would recommend them both. But the faber castell were darker and more pigment. I did only have 12 of each to choose from because I bought a small set. I just wanted to share that with you. I wish I could show you the picture.
    I loved this video! I love these pencils.

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  Před 2 lety

      You compared the Museum Aquarelles or Supracolor 2? I'm surprised the Aquarelles were not as pigmented. These are quite opaque and heavily pigmented, while ADs are more translucent. Now, if you're comparing the Supracolor 2 then for sure ADs seem (to me at least) to have more pigment. I'd definitely like to see the comparison. What brand of 100% cotton did you use?

    • @loveandlife4222
      @loveandlife4222 Před 2 lety

      @@ColorfullyOptimistic I used caran dache museum aquarelles and compared them to faber castell albrecht durer. I think I used old bee 100 % cotton watercolor paper that was from before the company switch. I can’t remember exactly but I only buy 100% cotton. I was very surprised how much more pigmented and darker the albrecht durer turned out. I also thought they were more creamy. I had assumed going into the comparison hands down that caran dache would come out better but they didn’t as far as the pigment payout. Now, I only have 12 colors of each brand ~ the ones that came in the color set. So that might have made a difference?? I don’t dislike the caran dache but it’s just different than the faber castell. With that being said, I would recommend them both and would love to have a full set of both. They are very beautiful watercolor pencils and the very best you can buy in my opinion.
      One day maybe I will try it again using arches or a better paper than bee. You should make a video comparing the two for us! I would love that.

      @ColouringwithK Před 2 lety

      @@ColorfullyOptimistic Sorry for the late reply - the Supracolors are really nice, very pigmented and good quality (just like Pablos but water soluble). They are a step below the Museum in terms of pigment intensity but they are still the next best thing to them. I got them because the Museum’s are lacking in pinks/purple colours so the Supras make up for that and I like the bigger colour range.

    Just watching this June 2022...These are some gorgeous luxury colors, for sure. And yes, I guess you could say the Supracolor Soft are the lower price "sister"to the Museum Aquarelles, but they're very good too...just not as good as the Museum Aquarelles. I have a 30 set SupraColor Soft, that I think were formally called Supracolor2...I have a basic set from the 90s that is called SupraColor2 but it acts like the SupraColor Soft. Thanks for sharing this lovely color treasure. I don't know that I'll ever get these since I'm pretty happy with my Supracolors when I want to have a watercolor pencil. I mainly use Polychromos & Prismacolor & some others for color pencil artwork. That said, these are twice as much with fewer pencils, so I'm going to play around with them and I'm also getting Supracolor this month, so I'll be able to do a comparison between the three.

    Thank so incredibly much for the long swatch and first impressions here. They really are so wonderful and looking forward to seeing your final favourite set. These do seem so pigmented but at the same time more opaque so some may not as thrilled(?) with them… perhaps! I have seen a few people say they prefer the albrecht durer. Every one is different with art supplies! I have a feeling I would love them! 😂
    Thank you so much again
    Edit- I forgot, I asked on a different video but think I made it sound a bit confusing … I’m going to get a few open stock to try- would it better to buy a few to make a blend( eg dark mid and light blue) or different colours to see how they mix( eg warm blue and cool ‘red’ to make purple etc) ? Perhaps either would be fine🤷‍♀️just to get a feel for them… I dream of owning them all😂
    Same with inktense- wondered if I should get a mix of colours or a dark and light blue s to create a blend or something 🤷‍♀️ hope that makes sense !. And I don’t mean mixing inktense with the museums.
    Thank you so incredibly much again!

      Yeah these are much more opaque than other watercolor pencils, but you can water them down to make them more transparent. Honestly, I would get a mixture and not a blend, because then you can make colors out of a good yellow, a pinkish red, and a blue and even get warm and cool variations

    Can you show how these look on regular paper like regular cheap coloring book paper?

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  Před 2 lety +1

      For cheap, you mean like CreateSpace? I may be using these on a ColorIt book color along this month. I don't typically use watercolor pencils on CreateSpace paper in general. They tend to sink in before they dissolve and the paper is not meant for water mediums.

  • @izza_ISFP

    A comparison between the AD and Museum on the same paper would make what you say more accurate maybe? You say the AD was fading more but the paper play a big role on how watercolor react...

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  Před 2 lety

      I mean I have used the ADs on watercolor paper. They still water down more in general/fade out and aren't as vibrant. That doesn't make them awful pencils though. I absolutely love my ADs too.

    I would much prefer a set that had more reds/pinks as red is a primary color and cannot be mixed to be created. It really gets me mad to see a set at this price point which is so heavy on the greens as green is a secondary color and can be made in various tints, tones, shades. Thanks so much for doing this swatch!

      It’s really hard to make a lightfast pink. It’s the same with Derwent Lightfast pencils. Almost no actual pinks.

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  Před 2 lety +1

      I mean pink is relatively easy to make here, so to me, pink isn't a big deal. Red would be, as red is a primary color needed, but there is a good red here and I don't need a large selection of reds as long as you have a true red to start with.

    (Not an english native speaker) I've bought a small set of Albrech Dürer and one Museum pencil for testing (a lot, I know XD). The former is more transparent and de caran dache is very bright. One day I want to get big sets of both, they are amazing and surprizinly complementary.
    But I've also heard that the oil pencils of both brands work beautifully together (couldn't test this, yet), so maybe it's to be expected...

      The Albrecht Durers and Museums are watercolor pencils, but they do work really well dry - if you haven't tried them that way yet.

      @@ColorfullyOptimistichave, and they realy work well this way. I still want a small set of polycromos for when I need a water resistent part of a drawing. But both watercolor pencil brands are going to be my priority, along with graphitint pencils. And I love melting them with water, they have no bussiness being this fun 😆. Have a nice day!

    thank you so incredibly much for the help :) i tried a few -they are SO pigmented! Laying them down (just in pencil form), I dont think they feel quite as soft or something as the Albrecht durer? Lovely video. I think it's always better to buy from an independent art store. If I have to save up because they're a bit dearer I'll do that. If we don't, all the independents will disappear and the big A will be able to charge whatever they want. Our buying habits can kill smaller companies.

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  Před 2 lety

      We don't have any small independent art stores out here. While I'm all about supporting small business in any niche really, we don't have them, so I have to buy from Blick, Jackson's, etc.

      @@ColorfullyOptimistic that's still heaps better than the big A. I'm in Australia so not familiar with Blick, and Jacksons while large is not a chain. I buy from them as well at times. The variety available from Jacksons is this way more than I can find locally.
